It's official -- the Sonic the Hedgehog movie is getting a sequel. The Paramount Pictures flick released to theatres in February of this year after a huge backlash to the main character's visual style. It might not have been a hit with critics, but it was a huge success at the box office. A follow-up was inevitable.
Paramount and SEGA confirmed to Variety that the production of a sequel is underway. Director Jeff Fowler and writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller are all set to return. The cast is yet to be confirmed, but it's safe to assume that Ben Schwartz (Sonic), Jim Carrey (Dr Robotnik), and James Marsden (Tom) will all pick up their roles again.
That's about all there is to know right now. It sounds like the sequel is in the very early stages, so it'll be a while before it's ready. Still, are you happy that Sonic will make a return to the big screen? Grab some popcorn in the comments section below.

'Sonic movie is getting a sequel. '
Hey my 11 yo kid has known it for ages. I got the scoop as soon as the movie ended.
Well, if it prints money, then run with it!
Any news on the big SEGA reveal planned for next week? Lots of rumours floating around new hardware. Lets just hope those saying microsoft have some form of exclusivity with them is nonsense. SEGA are one of my fave devs this gen
I loved this movie more than it deserved. Seeing classic Jim Carrey made me feel like a kid in the 90s again. And Marsden is funny! I hope he gets more comedic roles. And it was great seeing an inter-racial marriage represented so well.
Fantastic news for the games to movie industry. Let's hope any future movie/TV tie-in s are treated with as much passion, respect and care as Sonic, Witcher, Pikachu and even Warcraft! A Mass Effect movie/TV shows would be awesome/epic to add to the sci-fi genre. Heck Half-life or Last of us would also make great tv/movies if done right!
I can only imagine how much more money a sequel could make. We have the goodwill from the first movie, plus there's the fact that the movie launched just before the current pandemic, causing cinemas to shut down about a month later (and I can tell you that even before the shutdowns, attendance for cinemas were declining from people not wanting to risk their chances) which probably won't be a factor next time. Plus the first one didn't even release in some territories, including the all-important Chinese market, because of said pandemic.
Will this one have a pulse?
@JJ2 Your child is very wise/smart. I had the same prediction soon as the post credits scene ended.
Looking forward to seeing the sequel in theaters as well.
@IanDavid Marsden is a phenomenal comedic talent. Sadly, his classic good looks and strong dramatic ability mean that he's mostly never used for comedy. If you want to see more of him in that type of role, he did an excellent supporting turn in 2007's Hairspray.
