The Last of Us: Part II has gone straight to number one in Japan. The PlayStation 4 exclusive sold a solid 179,000 copies -- around 60,000 more units than The Last of Us managed when it launched in 2013. It's a decent result for Sony, seeing as the Japanese software charts are often dominated by Nintendo Switch titles these days.
In any case, it's another win for Naughty Dog's latest. The game has broken sales records here in the UK, and there are reports that it's doing equally well in other regions. Despite the controversy surrounding the title online, it's clear that The Last of Us: Part II is going to be another commercial juggernaut for Sony. It'll be interesting to see how it measures up against other blockbusters at the end of the year.

94 on Metacritic, after playing it I can say most of the reviews are justified.
Is it now the biggest launch exclusive from Sony in Japan or is it still Days Gone? Or was previous holder Death Stranding? Nevertheless, The Last of Us Part 2 is amazing and my GotY. Straight masterpiece
Masterpiece? pur-lease
Curious to see the reception there. Shares similar nihilistic themes to a lot of Asian films. The Beat Takeshi gangster films, and Oldboy come to mind.
I'm on the farm now, so must be really close to the end. It's brilliant and brave storytelling. Haven't seen even a film, let alone a game, that cuts this deep for a long time.
@pimpjuice May not be yours but for some people it is.
@Akurusu. Is it 94 now on metacritic.it was 96 before.its tied with god of war if its 94.word up son
I can't help but speculate how well Ghost of Tsushima is going to do over there. It seems like the kind of game that's tailor made for a Japanese audience, but I get a weird feeling that it might be a bit too on the nose for them.
Regardless, this is an excellent accomplishment for Naughty Dog and well deserved in my opinion. I haven't finished The Last of Us 2 yet, but I can already tell its going to stick with just as much as the first game did.
The ones saying the game is bad, don't even know why they hate it, and never give examples. Their rage is all based around a misconception from someones leaks, and in turn made weak willed followers just follow suit. Most haven't even played the first game.
This is a solid game all around. The gameplay, the atmosphere, and yes even the story. People whine and stop playing after 5 hours and don't even know a quarter the story.
Nice! It will be #1 in the US also. Every digital artist at work is playing it.
Already in the "other part" of the game. And even the bashing of that is unfounded. It gives you a crazy perspective on everything you had done to that point.
And makes the scene before an even bigger "ah crap" moment 😕🤦♂️
This is what the Gaming Industry at the same level as the Film Industry looks like.
Great news, it is a brilliant game I am no where near the end (about 10 hours in) but loving every minute. Good to see titles like this having success in Asia, as others have said it will be interesting to see what GOT does in a few weeks time!
"as the Japanese software charts are often dominated by Nintendo Switch titles these days"
Excuse me as I frame this sentence for posterity.
@Agramonte It's like when you it think it ends, but it doesn't lol. Loving it so far, but very tense as well.
This can't be true because everybody hates this game and it's story!
@Octane I saw the issue that some could have. But taking a piece from your NL comment -
"It's bold and unexpected, but I do appreciate them for taking the risk instead of making a very safe sequel"
Also, thanks to the videogame format they can do something writers do all the time with an antagonist in a book - but here you need to play it out (literally).
Assuming that moment - will be night and day later on. Medic should have stayed home! 🤦♂️
@playstation1995 Which makes Persona 5 Royal the top PS4 exclusive because it sits at 95. Japanese developers do it better.
@GamingVeteran Because the game just isn’t that good. Once the hype died down people started being more vocal with the games issues. Some games don’t need a sequel and The Last of Us Part II is proof of that.
@Akurusu. I dont want to play all Japanese games.hell no.its gets boring fast 🤔.i like western games more.japanese is cool.but i like western games better.i been gaming since 1981 playa.word up son
My favorite game this gen.
It was always going to sell well. Doesn't stop the game from being a disappointment (story, the gameplay is extremely well done).
@playstation1995 You don’t have to play all Japanese games, but Persona 5 Royal has the highest Metascore of all PS4 exclusives.
@Gamer83
Agreed. Story was poor, game dragged towards the end and the ending was nonsensical.
The gameplay was intense and fun on survivor no doubt but idk how the people on this forum can be saying 10/10 when a "linear story driven game" has a poor story.
6-7/10 at best
@Netret0120
I'd go as high as an 8/10. I think the gameplay is great and the world-building is also really good, but the main story drags down the experience a bit. It's not a bad game, it just didn't live up to my, admittedly high, expectations.
@Akurusu. Red dead redemption 2 overall got a 97 word up son
@playstation1995 Not a PS4 exclusive, a multiplat. It’s on Xbox and PC has well.
@Akurusu. I know but red dead redemption 2 is a amazing game.word. up son
