We’re all quite familiar with the PlayStation 5’s trademark black-and-white box art banner now, but while it remains a novelty, feast your eyes on a bunch more official designs. You’ve no doubt already seen the Watch Dogs Legion and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla covers, but Australian covers for Far Cry 6, Planet Coaster: Console Edition, and Overcooked: All You Can Eat Edition have since appeared on JB Hi-Fi’s website.
We never really had a problem with the design to begin with, but it’s been interesting to see how it pairs with different key art. We reckon these cases are really going to stand out in stores, especially with retail spotlights shining on the distinctive white strip. What do you reckon? Are you a fan of this look, or would you have preferred something different? Let us know in the comments section below.

Not a fan to be honest
I like the designs. The white/black colouring is fine, and it's good to see the trademark Sony blue as the box colour. Plus it'll be easy to spot the difference between this and the PS4 boxes in shops.
@crimsontadpoles Tbh, I would have expected a change in box colour, to fit the new model, white or black. Very least a different size or thickness. They look too similar in my opinion.
@crimsontadpoles Yeah I think the cool thing with these is that they'll work with existing PlayStation retail displays, but they'll also be obviously different from the PS4 cases (which will be around for a good few years yet!)
Gonna pre order planet coaster. Was suprised when the physical edition was announced 2 days ago.
I've always wondered why DVD/Blu Ray cases are so large. All you really need is a CD-sized case. So much plastic wastage.
Soooo... I can totally just buy the bottom three for PS4 then play it on the PS5 right?
@Jayofmaya Because it's a traditional Blu-ray case, that's why it's the same. Both the PS4 and PS5 use Blu-rays.
I wonder how they will label PSVR PS5 only games?
The white/black color scheme doesn't mesh well with the blue cases, IMO.
I don't care for it. I believe they'll change it in a few years.
Yeah agree with everyone about the mixed colours should have been a black box but then I don't don't know if there is some issue with games having the same style boxes as video media as games have always had different cases and the black cases would be the same as 4k discs
I wish the plastic of the cases were translucent black
Aha, asked the developers of Planet Coaster if they are releasing a PS5 physical version to no response. So this confirms it for me.
white banner is a bad choice. black could go with any game art box.
@Brydontk Yep!
I still think it looks cheap.
Edit - It's actually starting to grow on me.
Love the covers themselves, find it strange that they still use blue cases. White or black cases would be the cherry on top.
Don't like it.... Looks too similar to the PS4 version, which I do like BTW. But I can see alot of mistakes being made, people trying to buy the PS4 version and grabbing this by mistake, or vice versa.
I like it. I agree that changing the colour of the cases to match would have been a good fit though
Even PS consoles blue case, odd PS consoles clear cases. If they don't go clear for PS5 then I am not buying a PS5. I jest of course but changing a pattern that has been going for 25 years now is disappointing.
I think the it would be a little bit better if they made the blue box black. It would fit in more with the black and white the thing is going for.
@Kidfried I do lol.
Instead of white it should have been holographic! Which in a way is almost colorless so it wouldnt clash with any colors from the art. Wish the case itself was black also, those black mockups looked incredible.
Doesn't matter anyway as im probably getting the digital version anyway
Oh, do you mean games still come in boxes? i'm joking! I actually think they're ok. Nothing fancy, but serviceable.
Not feelin it. All that empty white space at the top... And with the blue plastic, it looks cheap, like a bootleg box or something. Like some others, wish they’d changed that darn blue plastic to something in the greyscale. But ya know, doesn’t really matter!
Aside from Overcooked, these are literally the first 4 games I want to buy for the PS5! Im not sure about the big white bit at the top, I think it needs to be smaller, but they at least match the aesthetic of the PS5 with the 2 tone white and blue design.
I'm hoping the white void to the right will be used to indicate PS VR compatible/required, and maybe the compatible VR controller inputs etc. This would be smart.
I’m not worried how the box art looks at all ,it can be packaged in a plain blue box for all I care,it’s what’s inside and the quality of the game that counts.
If the case was white or black it would look better. Currently the white banner at the top looks horrible with the blue case.
Like previous comments have mention, the blue box coloring does not mesh well with the new black and white header. They should of used the color of the PS3 cases, it would of worked well.
However, from a personal standpoint it will not matter to me much since I will be going all digital with the PS5.
I like PS4 cases more to be honest, they're slick but not boring, and colorful but not garish.
I think these would be better if the color schemes only had two colors instead of three.
It looks way less classy and more "amateurish" than the PS4's, to me.
I also found that blue gradient to be very cool for the PS brand.
I mean they look fine, but when can we pre-order the console? Kinda getting a bit pissed off at Sony at this point - I've put enough to one side that I can still get it at £600, but I want to know whether I can spend any of that money on stuff I could have now...
I like it. Though black casing to match the black text on white background would've been lovely.
Can't say I'm impressed. But as someone who hasn't bought a game on disc since mid PS3 life cycle I shouldn't really complain.
My god the ps5 header is so BORING, not even an evolution of the ps4, just a black ps5 logo on a white header.
I preferred some of the mock-up colours but hey it’s just a box innit...
Discs in 2020. How quaint.
Digital all the way for me so don't care if the boxes have a thousand colour patterns on them!
I think it was the black box one I liked that I saw a few months back. Something about these just look odd. But I won't cry about it
More butterflies and candys, and it will be perfect (sarcasm)
It's better than the ps3 and ps1 style but it doesn't compete with PS2 & 4
@Max_Eckhardt
There are two answers. The first is visibility. The smaller the item is, the less retail space it takes up. The second is the common mindset of bigger is better.
I believe the PS5 is going to be one of the BEST gaming systems EVER created in that it's going to give us some of the BEST games EVER played! Just found out the RUMOR about 3rd party devs saying the PS5 struggling to hit 4K 60FPS is completely FALSE! It's been traced to the guy who started the rumor & he said he "made it up, in order to compensate from the bad press the XSX was getting about Halo delays etc." I knew it was BS but almost every single gaming site reported on this RUMOR of the PS5 struggling to hit 4K 60FPS due to its underwhelming performance. I was glad to see this article! https://gamerant.com/ps5-4k-performance-refuted-teamkill-media/
Finally got the truth out there, the PS5 is NOT struggling in fact it's hitting 4K 60FPS easily without even being optimized! Thought my fellow PlayStation gamers would like to see this, happy gaming my friends 😉💨✌️
I like the design
Oh no, please no
I'll get used to the new design over time I'm sure...plus I'm maybe planning to own more digital games than physical this time around.
Not only due to physical space constraints at home, but also because I like the faster loading times with digital games.
Looks great. Don't understand the complaint. Black and white plays well with almost any colour, and blue not only is trademark to PlayStation but also it's the most popular colour in the world.
The blue case ruins everything, beyond hideous and frankly lazy. A clear, black or white case would have made all the difference.
It just dawned on me, the cases are blue because they contain blu rays!! Seems quite obvious now I have spotted it.
I'm off to sit my corner with my dunces cone on
I like it. Very nice design.
It's not great to be honest, as with everything from the PS5 it all seems a bit like it's trying too hard. I don't think it will age well in my opinion.
Wasn’t a fan at first, but it growing on me.
Ehhh, looks odd, especially when you have games with contrasting colours. Doesn't look as sleek as the original PS4 design.
Maybe it will grow on me over time though.
i don't know why, but i've always hated the blue boxes, i just thought they looked silly.
@Old-Red i can't wait for the hardware revision lol, HAS to look better.
@Octane So did the ps3, but the case was clear. I feel like the ps4 case is slightly thinner then a blue ray DVD case.
@Jayofmaya True, but they likely won't change the size, because display shelves are build for the default size blu-ray case. And blue because blue = PlayStation. So they can either just use the same case, or try and develop something new that won't be too different anyway. And it makes sense, because people are familiar with the PS4, so it's a good idea to continue that with similar products people are familiar with.
