If you ever need video evidence of how much of an advancement PlayStation 5 is over the current-gen PlayStation 4, just check out the clip we've embedded below. Courtesy of Game Informer's coverage, we've got a good look at the load times of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PS5. Or, rather, the complete lack of them when transitioning from a hideout to the open world. And when that's compared to the load screens of PS4's Marvel's Spider-Man, the result is really something to behold.
As you can see, Spidey's 2018 adventure on PS4 takes roughly 18 seconds to load into the open world. Meanwhile, Miles Morales on PS5 is a single second transition that doesn't break gameplay and even kickstarts a phone call with a friend. It's easy to forget how often these lengthy load screens popped up as we look back at the best titles of the generation through rose-tinted glasses. This comparison once again proves that the PS5 SSD is a big game-changer.

Awesome.
waiting for digital foundry to downplay this..
But will the remastered also have 0 load times or is it the same as before?
Honestly I’m more excited to find out the uses of adaptive triggers in this. The concept of games loading quickly has now sunk in, I don’t really need to see 4 million applications of ‘games used to load, now it’s fast’.
This is neat! A first next-gen take on loading screens and it is already so sneaky and benign most people won’t even think of it as a loading screen. It just feels like continuous movement (though you can see the moment the portal switches from grey circle to visible city).
@AFCC
I read it's (as good) as instantaneous and they use a transitional wipe/fade. They included an toggle option in the menu to re-include the loading screen transition animations (e.g. where spider-man is taking the subway) so you can still see these if you wanted.
I'm curious how the PS4 version will handle the same scene. There was no much hint at a place where one could insert a loading screen there, unless they just abruptly black out as the player reaches that opening.
I'm sure I'll find out soon, since I'm getting it on PS4, there is no way I'll be able to find a PS5 until early next year, after all.
Just wow so much more fluid and less immersion breaking - fantastico
Wondering if the SSD will also eliminate the need of developers having to hide loading screen behind "slow walking through tight squeeze corridor".
It's incredible when you see the difference side-by-side like that. I think we'll get used to lightning fast loading times and won't be until we go back to old consoles that we're like... Oh!
@zebric21 you can be sure they will find some way of doing exactly that!
I wish they'd have shown the old game running on the new hardware (BC) as well to see how much the SSD speeds up "normal" load screens, as well.
@GamingFiend they're just salty they haven't received a PS5 yet
Looks ace and really looking forward to playing this, it is remarkable when you see the difference!
I wonder how much of an impact the SSD will have on average times to complete games, considering that a significant chunk of time will be removed from games either by reducing load times on existing games or by removing the need for constricted gameplay sections that disguise loading of assets.
It's a game changer man, we're back to nes cartidge loading time now 😁
ps. It's only about 18 second but I already impatient waiting for the ps4 version to load lol.
not to be that guy but its kinda funny SSD are a key feature for consoles since its been a thing pc users have experienced for 10 years XD.
really looking forward to November 19th
@ArcadeHeroes yet ssd haven’t done anything like this at all on pc.
@NEStalgia I would also like to see the PS5 running PS4 games for load times as that is mainly what I would be playing if I got one at the minute.
Really cool but kind of pointless to show on an exclusive.
Show something like Cyberpunk or Valhalla loading times Vs the other guy
Wow I knew they were saying it was going to be fast but that is awesome!
Jeezo, what's everyone's beef with Digital Foundry? Guys are doing great work.
@zebric21 you obviously don't know much about those guys then
@DrClayman lots of idiots about these days, plenty on Twitter too that John has to put up with. I think they're videos are great and they're always impartial
@ArcadeHeroes Yes it's true PC's have had SSD's for years. If you want to be at the bleeding edge of technology that is usually where you want to be, for a cost.
But as @Medic_Alert said while it's a great improvement using a SSD over a using a slow mechanical drive on PC, it isn't currently utilising all the speed available or using it efficiently.
By not allowing direct access to the SSD PC's currently have a bottleneck and you are only as fast as your weakest link.
Both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S remove that bottleneck. Soon PC's will too with DirectStorage linking to PCIe NVME drives, and similar technologies.
@deathaxe This. It's only a couple of years ago that I added a gen 3 NvME to my system, until then I had the OS and a small selection of games on a gen2 SATA SSD, and the rest on spinning rust.
Choice comes with unfortunate fragmentation, which means you need to be a lot more involved and know a lot more to make the most of what you own, and game developers are always going to target the mass majority of players then adjust up and down for the lowest and highest specs they want to support. A new generation of consoles will also be very good for games on PC, but could see a much worse experience for the lower quartile of gamers based on their system specs.
