Just five days after its US launch and 48 hours before its arrival across European shores, the PlayStation 5 has its very first public firmware update. Version 20.02-02.25.00 is available to download right now on the console, and is said to do the one thing we all knew and loved back on the PlayStation 4. Yes, this first PS5 firmware update improves system performance! Bring on the next-gen stability updates.
The patch note is as follows:
- This system software update improves system performance.
Weighing in at around 868MB, you'll have this update downloaded in no time at all. So, just days before us lot get our hands on the PS5, let's hope this update makes the system slightly smoother to use, ironing out some of the more immediate kinks. Have you downloaded this PS5 patch and noticed any differences? Let us know in the comments below.

We're gonna need a whole new set of PS5 stability GIFs!
We are in a new era of stability...
Hopefully fixing the potential external drive issues.....???
So nervous about plugging mine into the PS5 on Thursday!
But nearly all my PS4 games are on it!
I don’t want to update mine. I’ve had ZERO issues since launch. With my luck this update will actually cause issues.
Laughs in stability
Yeah, I haven't used my external drive or put my system in rest mode yet. Waiting for them to say that particular issue is fixed first...
I hope we'll find out somehow when the external storage / rest mode problems are fixed ... rather than it just being included in a generic changelog like this.
@Perryg92
Can’t you Re-download to the SSD, or WiFi from the PS4 to ps5? I wouldn’t risk it right now, plus you get better performance from the internal SSD anyway. Surely you can’t want to play more than, what, 10-15 games at once right now?
I thought the screw for the base stand was designed for this!!
So, fixed the rest mode / external drive issue?
Or default to PS5 version if both PS4/PS5 installed?
They seem to me to be the big bugbears of the people at the moment.
@thefourfoldroot & @JapaneseSonic I'll just be patient for a confirmed fix.
I've already got Miles Morales, Spidey Remastered, Planet Coaster, Bugsnax and Astro's Playroom to look forward to
I was also contemplating simply reinstalling a handful of my PS4 games onto the SSD directly from disc, if enough space, to circumvent the external drive issue.
@jmac1686 If you've had no issues with "your luck"...
perhaps you are luckier than you think
ROW thanks for beta testing for us EU users
It's nice that the US are beta Testers for Europe it seems - hoping this does fix a lot of the issues. I would say fortnightly updates until January would be my bet.
@thefourfoldroot indeed. I have a few downloaded (along with saves). I just want to know when it's fixed, lol
@themightyant people are acting like all of these issues are widespread and everyone with a PS5 is experiencing them which is not the case at all
@Perryg92 I haven’t had one problem with it since day 1
@Futureshark I’ve used rest mode since launch without a single problem. And my system automatically downloaded and selected the PS5 version of game so not sure why people are having so many problems
@djape same
@jmac1686 love how quick Sony is woth updates 👍 great to see
I wonder if the ever helpful @god_of_nowt can provide any detail about the specifics of this 'stability update'?
I feel like I should add though, I've actually only had two very minor issues. Once I lost the internet for a brief moment and the entire system slowed down to a crawl. Turning it off and then back on again fixed that very quickly. The only other issue I had was one crash during Miles Morales that took me back to the home screen. That didn't actually matter as the game picked up right where I left off when I fired it up again.
Fingers crossed this addresses many of the issues reported.
Problem is in this era of social media is that a few people have encountered issues, which then gets blown out of proportion by armchair analysts.
That has led to some outlets reporting issues with PS5 like its a much bigger issue than it (hopefully) is.
Certainly made me nervous given its my first launch console - but hopefully all will be fine!!
Hehe Liam, I love the subtitle 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Very strange version number, sounds like a beta build honestly ). Or this kind of updates applies to more than just OS, maybe even firmware update for the I/O controller. I know that many people don't care about the technical part but would have been nice to get at least a link to check all changes that this update implies.
@jmac1686 people love making a big deal out of nothing nowadays. I have also had no issues with my day one console.
People assume it’s widespread because they see a post or two about an issue on social media and jump to conclusions, when in reality it’s a very small number of people with issues.
Now to wait for the real world tests of what its fixed/broken
@graysoncharles Yep, agreed - and I wouldn't expect to see it spelled out in this sort of changelog. I just meant I hope we find out that it's fixed in some way other than waiting until it's been a long time since anyone reported problems
If they didn't fix the external drive and rest mode issue this is useless lol
So day one patch 👌 I got you!
This might have been asked already but does this fix the PS4 external harddrive issue? Mine arrives on Thursday and I'm really wanting to continue Like a Dragon
@God_of_Nowt do you know if this fixes rest mode?
@Perryg92 digital games?
Almost another GB gone for something so vague... How much did the PS4's OS+updates size bloat over the years?
@jmac1686 you aren't able to log into psn though if you don't update the software like ps4?
@AyanamiReign Not necessarily another GB of disk space lost as it likely replaces existing code.
So fresh, so stable.
@jmac1686 I fully get that, just having some fun as we have to wait an extra week.
@Rob_230 It's true, online discourse can really skew your perspective of how widespread something is. Naturally we only hear about the bad things because everyone else is playing the console with no issue.
Fair enough if it was an entire social media thread with thousands of people echoing the same problem — that's when you'd assume something is wrong given the sample size — but when it's just the odd person here and there...
@God_of_Nowt Once again thanks
@God_of_Nowt I like! Thank you!
@God_of_Nowt Do you know when Sony are going to change the gold star next to your PSN level to the new badge thing on the PS App? On the PS5 it's the new badge but not the app still.
@AyanamiReign - PS4 OS shrunk over time
@jmac1686
Great to hear your PS5 is doing well and behaving as it should. Looking forward to mine coming this week so I can join the club.
Unfortunately the internet being what it is, the noisy minority can easily overstate what is a non-issue into near biblical Armageddon size problems.
I'm glad to hear it's all overstated as I expected, cheers!
The long and beautiful journey for the world's most stable console has begun...
What ever happened to FW 1.50-1.60? It was a simple numerical system. What's with the 20.02-02.25.00?
Another thing that's been around since the PSP is gone. Someone at Sony is really trying to bury the past.
Great news! Always love a stability patch Will be ever so slightly less worried that something will go wrong now. Like many have said its a small minority who have issues anyway.
As same as every food package must contain all ingrediences, every patch should have full list of changes and be optional to install. My PS4 Pro has suffered serious slowdown since 6.50 version.
@Optimusprime706 Sorry, are you asking if my PS5 games are digital? Or the PS4 ones on the external drive?
Miles Morales and Planet Coaster are physical, Spidey Remastered, Astro and Bugsnax digital.
PS4 games on external drive are mainly physical too.
@djape That's good to know! Thanks!
First thing I'll do when I get my ps5 on Thursday is update it. Hell yeah.
There goes another gig of memory 😅😭
Some users are reporting PS4 games loading even faster after this update
@tameshiyaku Nah, it will replace some of the files and probably stay more or less the same in total size
Hey I'll take all the stability updates that Sony rolls out. Ever since that one little freeze last Friday my PS5 has been working flawlessly in both Astro and Spidey.
Guess the console just had to get that one freeze out of it's system.
Once they bring out the patch that let's me plugin another ssd inside I'll go out and buy the console as I'm keeping my ps4 and it's external hdd in another room even when I get the ps5.
Had not a single crash until I completed this Firmware upgrade, not a biggie but here's the outcome if you run into this.
-After the update installed the system automatically rebooted
-After reboot, I had like an analog grey static screen with some odd noise, decided to wait 5 minutes..just in case
-As this screen and noise wasn't going away I decided to unplug the HDMI from the PS5 and wait 10 sec and plug it back in... Image and sound came back and the system was waiting at the usual dashboard screen.
All good for now, I am using back port for 3d pulse and external hard drive, this was my only crash since Nov 12.
@Perryg92
I plugged my PS4 external drive into the PS5 with no problem. It puts all my new PS4 games onto that with no problem. Hope this helps.
But is it as stable as 3DS?
I'm still not going to use any external HD at all for quite a while. That's too serious a problem to have launched with even if it's relatively low risk.
I didn't have a single issue with my external in till yesterday when my copy of miles morales came in. The moment a cutscene ended and player control was gonna happen, it just hard crashed and stayed stuck at 50%. Left it there for an hour to see if it'd advance. So forced shut it down, black screen on boot. Wouldn't come back up till i unplugged the external but thats the only hardcrash i had and it played nice with the external after. Miles morales does not like externals lol.
hopefully, this update resolves some of that.
It would be really helpful is Sony stated what issues the update resolved, rather than a generic changelog which amounts to nothing.
That just doesn't help anyone and leaves it wide open for people to either start second guessing or trying to find out for themselves. Not consumer friendly at all!!
Simply stating that the update "Improves System Performance" is quite poor - unless of course that is literally all this update does!
I haven't had a single problem yet with my PS5 and I've had an external SSD plugged in (type-C usb) since Nov 12. But, THEN, when it was rebooting following this firmware update, weird issues during the reboot. Ultimately got through it fine. But I think next firmware upgrade I'm going to (safely) unplug the external SSD first...
