The second firmware update of the PlayStation 5 generation has arrived, weighing in at exactly 868MB. It's available to download on your console right now with the file name 20.02-02.26.00, but the question is: what does it do? Well, just like the first one, it's all about improving the system's performance. The patch note simply reads:
- This system software update improves system performance
Will this patch fix the handful of problems PS5 users have been having? We'll have to wait for reports to hit the Internet before we can work out what the update has actually done. We shall update this article if we learn more. If you've noticed any differences, let us know in the comments below.

Not had any issues so far, despite the articles, hoping this fixes issues for others. It's good to see them being so quick and active on this.
Why did they remove folders on the PS5. It's not a massive thing, but a useful one and one people asked for constantly on the PS4.
Hopefully this will fix the rest mode issue, I’ve been too afraid to use it just in case, lol. Maybe the disc spinning thing too (I haven’t even put a disc in the thing yet, I should test that!).
@Vyns
It’s not so much that they’ve removed them, just that it’s not a priority for a machine launch. Same reason they haven’t implemented VRR and 1440p output, it’s just not something that 99.99 percent of people will care about. These things will all come though.
Can you imagine if every little thing had to be finished before release? We wouldn’t have the consoles for an extra 12 months just for fringe cases.
@thefourfoldroot I use the rest mode all the time and its been fine.
Please no more LAN Cable not connected errors, please!
EDIT: Nope, still there.
@Vyns Agreed. Missing folders already. For anyone with a large collection it's a pain (I think I have around 150-200 games installed of around 600 purchased). I have started using voice search through the controller which is a cool feature I didn't think I needed.
I love the new UI however as a UI designer having all the menus in a flat bar at the top limits their options for delving deeper e.g. look at the PS4 store you had many subsections in a sidebar - deals, demos, apps, etc. On PS5 it is 4 options. Not so good for discoverability
Additionally don't know why they removed the 'Deals' Tab from the shop as it was in preview PS5 builds. It's now really difficult to find a deal. Which makes me less likely to buy. Surely not what they intended
I wish they would give us more detailed patch notes than just : "This system software update improves system performance"
That way we wouldn't have to find out by ourself what they have fixed
I'll have me some of that Stability.
@themightyant Yeah I had a folder on my PS4 of games I was waiting to play on PS5 in BC mode. Purely because my PS4 is a jet engine when I tried to play them. God of War, The Last of Us 2, RDR2 to name a few.
@angrygamer
I’m sure mine is too! But why risk it? It take very little time to turn back on. My only annoyance is I can’t charge the controller when it’s fully off.
Awesome... I've had issues with installing games it seems to uninstall games for no reason, had to reinstall demon souls and spiderman twice already! Don't think this is a common problem?
Oh nice. I wonder if they are going to speed up the fan spin a little bit.
I was a bit worried as our new kitten kitten has been jumping up and running around near the PS5 - with 2 stability updates already, I'm a bit more relaxed now.
Great job Sony!
@mariomaster96 Its like they don't want to admit there were bugs even though they have fixed them.
The experience has been smooth for me but a bit of transparency on what has been fixed would be good.
@thefourfoldroot
Yes the disc spinning can get weird but I have no problem with rest mode. Or maybe people mean game resume mode? I always close my games before shutting in rest mode kinda old fashion guy I suppose.
@Medic_Alert I've not had any issues running my ps4 games from an external drive.
It's a self destruct sequence for scalpers
@Thesnipergecko Same. I made sure I made photos/screenshots of both my folders and my wishlist before they were removed.
God of War looks and plays amazingly at a solid 60fps. Get involved and enjoy.
(Did the same for Xbox where they have annoyingly removed the X-enhanced filtering option for games that got an Xbox One X enhancement, and not having the mid-gen upgrade, was waiting for Series X. FYI you can only filter by Series X|S / one / 360 / OG Xbox titles now. A minor inconvenience)
@Medic_Alert It's annoying that you can only have one external storage on PS5... but they're not hearing that
@Vyns I agree, I like having games organised in a folder
Remember those PS4 days when we would groan at stability only firmware upgrades? Now we welcome them with open arms ....those days....
Seems to me it corrupted my Dirt 5 save after the update ☹️ 🥲
@sham8nix it's a common problem I guess is just that people found a workaround for this.But still worth to patch it though...
Just insert your disc(provided you have the disc version of console)and let the game install by itself instead of you clicking "copy"
It works for me
I'm another one wanting to know exactly what is patched - I'm holding off using rest mode, transferring saves, using LAN and putting my PS4 games on an external drive until I'm confident it won't cause issues. I am unlucky when it comes to hardware all too often!
@themightyant god of war at 60fps what resolution is that at? Just wondering have they unlocked the framerate for the higher fidelity?
Slight off topic but where do you see the update notes for apps and games like it did on PS4? I don’t see option anywhere
Only had one issue whereby a cutscene right at the start of Miles Morales froze and then my PS5 hard shut down and then when I turned it on the database was rebuilding. (wasn't the best first impression!)
Other than that, no issues since and have had the console in rest mode half a dozen times.
Still super nervous to attach my external drive to the system though!
I have ended up downloading my PS4 games from scratch from disc onto the SSD and my PS4 saves via PS Plus Cloud. But I must be at capacity with the cloud storage, as I went to play Horizon and the save file was 2-3hrs behind where I knew I was!
@Fuzzymonkeyfunk I honestly don't know what resolution it is at... and I did a lot of digging to find out. Santa Monica's tweet was unclear. My TV says 4K but it could have upsampling.
What I will tell you is that once I stopped worrying about what the 'numbers' were and just looked at, and enjoyed it for what it was the game looks absolutely incredible. On PS5 I don't notice any major difference between the resolution mode (4K checkerboard on PS4) and performance which is 60fps. I did on PS4 where it was 1080p30.
Honestly i'd say just go play and judge for yourself, I think we can all be too hung up in the weeds on details like this. I'm certainly guilty of that. Digital Foundry and many others are 100% right when they say that resolution beyond 1440p is meaningless compared to artistry and effects.
Been using mine since launch every day and so far it runs really well. The only minor issue I've had is the system going into "rest mode" by itself. Hopefully this will fix that (I read that rebuilding the database also helps without deleting any files).
@sham8nix I had the same issue with Demon Souls, just because I ejected the disc I had to reinstall and install an update all over again.
@Fuzzymonkeyfunk 1080 I believe.
@sham8nix I have had this issue, thankfully an easy fix
When you enter the disc, don't click copy. After a minute or so it should start copying automatically and trigger the download for the update.
If that doesn't work, disconnect from the internet, restart the console and then do the above. Then connect to the internet and download the patch
@Medic_Alert which brand/model ssd and where from?
Some reddit users report their external drives are working now whereas they would crash the console immediately upon plugging in before. If anyone had this issue it might be worth another try now.
@sham8nix I had this problem and it was 100% replicable but also easy to avoid by not pressing the copy button but waiting ~15s instead, like @Jmatt_021 said
@adambelton Crucial MX500 2TB is currently £155.99 on Amazon.
I use it in my PC and Series X it's great.
@solocapers That's what I thought but not what I experienced. My TV said 4K in performance mode and there was no noticeable graphical differences between performance and resolution mode. But performance was a solid 60fps.
Caveat: i'm old(ish), my eyes aren't what they were, and I didn't zoom in 200% and slow down the footage to point out minor differences like Digital Foundry! Give it a go.
Currently have an issue where if you disable Auto-Sync for a games save file there's no way to enable it back on... My Dirt 5 save got corrupted and I had to auto-sync disabled to delete my first save file which means therefore I had no backup.... :/
Facepalm....
Sony you fools, tell us what you are doing!
@ankehuber This error occurred to me a couple of times too while playing Miles Morales in Fidelity mode. Unfortunately, I think it might be a hardware issue. I can live with it for now though and will wait until stocks are refilled to ask for a replacement unit (if I'm right, and it can't be patched through FW updates).
@thefourfoldroot if you don't use rest mode yo switch the thing on and it takes so long to do updates you've lost interest and your an hour through a film before it's finished! Mind you the destiny patch yesterday took 45 mins to install even with rest mode enabled... They really need to fix that.
@themightyant your right once I started playing mikes morales in performance mode I couldn’t go back to resolution. My oled does a good job at upscaling anyway, looking forward to replaying god of war next year 😊
Anyone else get that glitch where some games are stuck queued up to download but never show up in the downloads?
@JJ2 I hope not.
@talocaca did you check your settings? In power settings auto rear mode is automatically enabled
Is right let others do the work for you ha.
@CrazyOldDave Hi, this annoyed me too but I found the way to enable it again
Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Sync Saved Data > Auto-Sync Saved Data and switch it back on from there. Hope that helps.
@themightyant I will once my ps5 arrives 😂
Still doesn't fix the Ghost of Tsushima not copying from disc. Gets stuck at 36%
Gives me the "CE-100005-6" error...I really want to continue playing Legends -.-
@AFCC have you tried pausing the update download while copying and resuming it after it's done? I saw someone mention that helped them (with a different game though)
@Voltan yes it didn't work. Thanks!
I'm thinking about trying my external hard drive with Ghost installed and copying the file from the external directly to the PS5 and then try to play from there...but I'm scared the external might destroy my ps5 lol
Do you guys get a trophy when you finally let the PS5 do what you want? Something like "You succesfully installed a PS4 disc game" 🏆... That would ease the pain!
Version 20.02-02.26.00 it’s on Sony’s website for those who are curious
.
This system software update improves system performance. An issue where installed disc versions of games were sometimes deleted was resolved. An issue that prevented the PS5 wireless controller from being charged while in rest mode when connected to the PS5's front side USB Type-A port using the USB cable included with some PS5 consoles was resolved.
@Mongooose
? It didn’t take me 45 minutes to fully install NMS, both the fully patched PS4 and PS5 versions. I think your problem there might be your internet.
I am wondering if those who have not had a crash yet are also NOT using external storage. I have a 2TB external drive with my PS4 games connected and have had one lock up and 3 outright crashes in two days. All with drive repairs the result. Not very stable yet.
@smbeats awesome, these are the exact two issues I've encountered (but worked around both easily)
Where do you find these notes exactly? The "details" on the PS5 said nothing more than "improves stability and performance".
@smbeats was just about to post this, I was facing issues with my front port USB when in rest mode.
https://www.playstation.com/en-ie/support/hardware/ps5/system-software/
just checked now update seemed to do the trick
@thefourfoldroot I've used rest mode quite a bit and have had zero issue. I make sure I don't have any games running and I have not hooked up any kind of hdd to it.
@voltan press the plus button to expand details
https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps5/system-software/
Look like it fixed the rest mode charging glitch mine is working now
@God_of_Nowt do you have the inside scoop for us? Is rest mode safe yet?
@Cikajovazmaj I do hope not, I guess I can live with it until stocks are plentiful but to try and send it back now would be an issue.
I do remember that my PS4 had this issue for months due to an update and that got fixed in a subsequent update.
I hope they fix the 'bug' where it keeps trying to install the PS4 version as well. No Man's Sky doesn't seem to do it when you leave the disc in, but Borderlands 3 does it all the time, and it's pretty annoying. I know it's a minor thing, but it seems like an easy fix, just make PS4 disc installation a manually selected thing, problem solved!
Is it just me, or is the PS5 store rubbish as well? No links to sales etc. I might be looking in the wrong place to be fair, but it's not as intuitive as the PS4 one, which I thought was pretty good apart from not having wishlists and price sorting being based on the RRP, not the actual current price.
@Dislecksier I have Sackboy on a PS4 disc and when I first inserted it, it didn't install automatically - I could select the correct game version and download it... but then it installed the PS4 version the next time I turned on the console with the disc inside 🤷♂️
I'm keeping it there for now as I'm not short on space yet
Had no issues at all, running lovely:)
Aside from Spider-Man: Miles Morales having some issues with locking up, which has happened several times even after the game update (there is really no excuse for this considering it's a first party game) everything has run fine so far. Hopefully Insomniac get things together because after one of the lockups I did have a system wide issue where I couldn't start any PS5 games (PS4 ones worked fine for some reason) until I deleted Miles Morales. Then I had to re-install it. Things are good again (for now) but that was concerning, don't think it's a PS5 issue though. The problems only happen with that game.
Had zero issues with my day one PS5 or Series X.
@Milomaine Unfortunately that does nothing. :/ It's still greyed out sadly.
Can't find anything out on it online.
@Vyns they might add it in a future update if there is a demand for it. Personally I like the new way the XMB is, I find it much easier to navigate than the PS4, I found folders a bit messy too.
@adambelton I'd wait until a proper confirmation by Sony on which SSD's are compatible. Currently Internal SSD expansions are disabled, however you can buy an external one, though if I remember correctly you cannot store PS5 games on them
@CrazyOldDave Can you scroll down and toggle the other things on and off?
@Milomaine It only does a verification of the sync. No options. :/ Good idea though. Feel free to throw any other ideas this way.
@CrazyOldDave That;s odd when i do mine there are iittle toggles next to each game. You're definetely selecting 'Auto-Sync Saved Data' and not 'View Sync Status'? When I select "View Sync status" it only does a verification of the status.
Sorry if I'm asking Dumb questions as this is all new to me.
@Milomaine That's purrfect. So I had to enable Rest Mode in order to toggle the Auto-sync back on. Thank you so much! <3
I'd left rest mode disabled due to the rumour of it breaking consoles for now.
Update today has addressed the external drive support.
Also noticed the a bit more fan noise today .
When playing game's.
@thefourfoldroot I wouldn't have thought so as the "Download" stage only took about a minute, it was the "Copying" stage that took more like 40 minutes, then "Installing" took about 3 seconds. Not very next-gen for what was described as a 100MB update!
@Mongooose
Strange. Something must have gone wrong. I would guess, if you uninstalled and tried again, the same issue wouldn’t replicate. At least it hasn’t for everyone else I know of. If it does you might want to contact Sony under warranty.
@God_of_Nowt thanks again
I'm sure others have asked this but can anyone confirm if this fixes the issues regarding the HDDs? I'm still holding off on trying mine
@God_of_Nowt Did that a ton of times, I guess the cd is dead...doesn't work for install on PS4 now I'm sad
@Vyns thought the same, I preferred have all my games in one folder, all my vr games in another and everything else in another...
@radamo im probably jinxing myself now but ive been using my external full of ps4 games, rest mode (games and console), disc installs and all other features without issue since i received the machine on launch day. I was panicked by all the horror stories running up to launch but its all been smooth so far.
switches on console, crosses everything
@Weebleman Good for you! That makes me a bit unhappy though... Was hoping it had to do with the external drive.
@radamo im using a 2Tb external also. Is it an ssd external or a run of the mill one?
P.s. wasnt my intention to make you unhappy.
@Weebleman WD External (non-ssd). USB 3 My Passport I think. Will get an M2 drive once they are supported.
@radamo we are literally using the same drive. I hope it gets sorted for you man, they seem to be getting the updates out quite steadily so fingers crossed its all put right for you.
Oh well. Must be some combo of games or something that caused the issue. Too many are having the issue for it to be hardware... so a firmware fix should address. In the meantime I will just shut down. Boots fast anyway.
@B-I-G-DEVIL Noticed that, the update history is only available for PS4 games, not PS5. Hope they add it, handy to see what's been fixed or new content added.
Default Trophy Sort Order
So just noticed that the PS5 always returns to the "Game Default" sort order for Trophies. I like to have mine sorted by Date, but when I do that, as soon as I back out and go back in again - it reverts back to the "Game Default".
This works on PS4 where it remembers your chosen setting. It's only a minor annoyance I know but something that was working on PS4 but now broken!!
@themightyant yeah, and the "deals" option was always the first I went for. It seems to be missing.
@SoulReaper-72 PS5 trophy’s UI in general needs a complete rethink. Reusing their horizontal cards is nice in theory but in practice is a far worse user experience than on PS4. The narrow Cards mean you can’t fit much data on and have to click to see more info and scroll to see more than a few trophies.
Plus not remembering sorting as you pointed out.
Hopefully they will realise this. A few high profile people like Greg Miller and several of the big trophy hunters have all pointed this out
@Vyns I presume they want to keep it simple in the beginning and drip feed features so as to not cause to many software conflicts.
@Fuzzymonkeyfunk GOW has two modes. Resolution mode (4K30fps) and Performance mode (1080p60fps).
I personally couldn't see the graphical difference on my 4K TV when sitting approx. 2m away from it, so I definitely recommend the Performance mode for the silky smooth gameplay.
@Weebleman Last night I played for a few hours along with downloading a few new items without issue. But I have been shutting down. Hesitant to try "rest mode" since it has become "rebuild" mode on mine...
