Giant Squid sure went for it on its sophomore game, didn’t they? After debuting with ABZÛ, they somehow pushed the envelope even further, delivering the luscious open-world experience that is The Pathless. Evoking feelings in line with some all-time greats like Shadow of the Colossus, Giant Squid’s latest endeavour is a remarkable game. Even elements we weren’t wholly convinced on at first blush won out and proved us wrong.
The locomotion system is especially unique and fun. While regular walking speed isn’t all that quick, the totems that are absolutely everywhere make up for it rather handily. Sprinting and shooting arrows at them to constantly build up your speed seemed tedious at the start, but by the end of the title, we wouldn’t have it any other way. Sprinting alongside a herd of deer while chaining trick shots was the surprise moment of the year we didn’t even know we wanted.
The game also does an exceptional job of integrating its boss fights into the experience. While the fights are the only real moments with any kind of combat, all the systems you need are already core pieces of the game, just utilised differently. The “chase” sequences that open all of the boss fights, in particular, are exhilarating. So much so that the boss fights could have consisted only of those moments and been great anyway.
But the real star of the game is the art. Like ABZÛ before it, The Pathless is downright stunning. Every tree, every brick feels deliberately placed in the world, and the stylised look works splendidly here. This goes double for the use of colour, with the title making incredible use of the power of HDR. The environments are littered with high contrast set-pieces, making many encounters — especially all of the aforementioned boss fights — visually impressive. The art direction in general is exquisite. All the abandoned structures and monoliths combine intricate beauty and haunting disrepair to present one of the most “lived-in” empty worlds we’ve ever seen. Each location has a story tell, and should you want to find that story, all the pieces are there to do so.
One of the most unsurprising things about The Pathless is the quality of music. Austin Wintory is unquestionably one of the most talented composers in the industry, and we were delighted to hear that he would be re-teaming with Giant Squid for this title. The resulting soundtrack is something that is unique among Wintory’s discography, combining tribal percussion and throat-singing with his signature stringed style. It pairs flawlessly with the experience and helps the title soar even higher than it otherwise might have.

How we decide our Game of the Year: This December, our editorial team created a list of nominees for Game of the Year based on our own review scores and a variety of other factors. After much discussion, we trimmed the list of nominees down and asked all Push Square staff and the Push Square community to vote on their five favourites using a points-based system. The ten games with the most points by the designated deadline were then determined as our favourites of 2020.

I bet that it's a great game, I'll eventually try it out when I get a PS5.
Ironically, knowing my skill in video games, I probably need a walkthrough in order to even understand where to go in this game, because I personally can't just go pathless.
This is one I’ll definitely get to on PS5 once my bloody local post depot sorts itself after a Covid outbreak.
Definitely excited to try this one out when I get a ps5. Assuming the price will go down cause unfortunately I doubt this sold very well with a $40 price tag
Yup, getting this.
I look forward to playing this but the price is a little steep for me. I’ve got a huge catalog of games to play through so unless the price is right I’d rather just play the games I already own.
Can’t wait to give this one a go but it’s about 4 games down the line for me.
I've really enjoyed this so far, though I'm only a quarter of the way through. It does a great job of making the environments feel enormous, which I think is a big part of what makes zipping through them while keeping your sprint meter full consistently fun. The only thing that hasn't clicked for me yet is the in-air movement, but that may just be lack of skill!
I don't think many of us ps5 owners bought it.
Nothing else quite like it and definitely one of my favourites it’s fourth on my personal game of the year list. I ended up one trophy short of the platinum. Somewhere in that world there is a tablet with some law on it that I haven’t read. I’m fairly certain I’ve done everything else.
I really enjoyed this, perfect length and terrific “page-turner”.
I plan to pick this up after Chriatmas. Possibly once it's had a price drop. The music sounds beautiful
I wonder what game will be #1 ? ... hmm ... what could it be? ... 🤔🤣
This looks great. Definitely on my play list. Unfortunately, they’ll probably have released The Pathless 3 by the time I’ve finished AC Valhalla 🙄
On my wishlist once I've played through my current PS5 backlog. Hopefully will have had a price drop by then too.
The game won me over in it's first minutes, but where it clicked for me was on the first boss fight. Both running side by side at what seemed tremendous speed, dodging things the boss throws at you, it's super good! One of the best moments for me!
I still haven't finished it but I will soon(ish)
@AFCC Me too! I was already quite enjoying it, but that first chase sequence really sealed the deal. I don't usually enjoy boss fights all that much, but I loved the boss encounters in this!
@gbanas92 I'm excited for the rest of them! But I'm taking my time with the game
@AFCC The final boss fight was one of my favorite boss fights ever, if not my favorite!!!!! Lemme know what you think of that once you get there haha
It's good, I didn't get to finish because I fell off a mountain and didn't feel like spending hours trying to figure how to get back to the top.
Some of the puzzles are clever. If this is a top ten game of the year it's been a ***** year.
Decent at best.
To each their own but the "art" in this game is not for me. Doubt I'll ever play it unless it's a freebie on plus in the future.
Might pick this up at some point, I have heard good things, might be something to play over Xmas.
I didn't even realise this was avail on PS4. I thought it was just PS5. Hmm, I'm tempted.
@Iroha Haha yep! The PS5 definitely got most of the attention!
I dont own a PS5 but i own the game it wasnt easy too get physical.
I was crying at least for 10 more minutes after the end of the game.
After 8 long years I finally got the spiritual successor to Journey, the masterpiece I purely love. No need for more words.
@gbanas92 holy sh*t man, that last boss fight is so cool! It's one of the most impressive visual displays I've seen in a game. So many particles and lights, it's actually super pretty!
@AFCC It's soooooooo good!!!! Even a couple months after the game launched now, honestly I still think about that fight a few times a week! It's absolute perfection!!!!
@gbanas92 it fits the game super well. I'm actually impressed they managed to have so much boss variety with a moveset so limited as they had. But visually the last fight is incredible. It helps that the boss looks a complete badass!
@AFCC Definitely impressed with how well the combat gels with the rest of the game since boss fights are the only moments with actual combat haha. They're incredible. And yeah, that final fight is on a while different level! I use the screenshot mode (I wish the game itself had a mode too) to grab a ton of shots during that! It looks amazing!
@gbanas92 yeah I did too. Actually I now have a page on instagram with mini reviews and I had to review this game as my second post. Too bad there's no actual photo mode to get better pics!
@AFCC luckily, the game didn't have too much of a ui, so it didn't interfere with getting really nice pictures! Not really being able to pause definitely did though haha.
Ooo, care to share the link to your insta? I'd love to check those out! What was your first post?
@gbanas92 yeah I had some really blurry pictures lol
Sure, I would be honored with your visit there. Keep in mind I am not an english speaker and not a real reviewer 😂
My first post was about my favourite game of 2020, Ghost of Tsushima. I also have some really nice pics of that.
@afccgaming is the name!
@AFCC Yeah i just really wish the action coulda been paused here and there haha.
And followed! Lotta these pictures are awesome!!!!
I had already forgotten all about Immortals! 🤣
@gbanas92 aww man, I loved Immortals so much! It's a shame that it's kinda forgotten. Is 100% better than Watch Dogs and also better than Valhalla.
@AFCC I'd probably play it before either of Watch Dogs or Valhalla haha. I'm not super keen on the whole "Ubisoft Open World Game" thing though. I think the last one of those type-a Ubisoft games I played was the first Division? It's been a bit haha
@gbanas92 Aww I love Ubi games. I didn't like the first Division thou xD
@AFCC I used to a long long time ago! Around Assassin's Creed 2, Far Cry 3, I loved the format then, but I got more and more sick of it as it went along before I more or less just gave up on their open-world games haha. I just don't have the interest to play that format from Ubisoft anymore. I do play Rainbow Six: Siege basically every day though!
