Sony has updated the PlayStation 3, its classic console originally released in 2006. The new firmware update – numbered v4.87 – actually includes a new feature as well: it updates the Blu-ray keys for recent movie releases, meaning you can continue to use the system as a media player. There’s also a minor security fix that the manufacturer has sewn up.
Are you still using your PS3 regularly? What are you doing with it these days? Are you still playing games on the console, or are you using it primarily as a Blu-ray player? Share some love for the retro (!) system in the comments section below, and let us know whether you’ve updated your firmware yet.

My George Foreman grill is as stable as ever!
Oh look, Grandad gets some of the fun too!
My PS3 Slim is still connected, but has only been used once since I got PS4.
My original 60GB Fat is in its box in the spare room, and (hopefully) still in full working order.
Nice to see that Sony still supports it in some way. The PS3 is still one of the best PlayStation ever made!
Well this is my current setup (60gb PS3), also just picked up a PS2 today and some more games for that and Metal Gear Solid and Ridge Racer for PS1, so yeah I use mine quite a bit for PS1 and PS2 games and have a 120gb PS3 for PS3 games
I still play mine a lot. Ps3 had a serious amount of great games and most don't feature microtransactions.
The year is 2020, just don't ask who the President is?
Currently using mine to play music and movies. Got quite a few movies stored on its hard drive
I am seriously reconsidering buying the PS3, just to play top spin 4
As a relatively recent entrant into the world of owning a PS (buying both a PS4 and 5 this year) I've been wondering about getting one of the PS3s which also plays PS1 and 2 games. Mostly I'm interested in checking out Xenogears and Persona 3 FES. Probably both of which are incredibly expensive to acquire.
Seeing as Demons Souls plays exactly the same as it did on the PS3, I’ll be tracking down a slim one at some point. The graphics are nice, but not $600 nice, and I don’t think I would use the system for anything else.
@DualshockInfinit bloody well should be if it's lean and mean?
My PS3 Slim White will celebrate its 1st Anniversary purchase day on 29 December 2020.
I will check the update when i play PS3 games later.
Still using it. After all these years, I'm having a blast with MOVE games.
Already sold my ps3 to fund my ps4 purchase, it's nice sony still update their old machine. I wish ps4 & ps5 have the ability to play psone games like ps3, or at least the digital one.
I plugged my PS3 in a couple months ago because I was maybe going to sell it (didn't happen) and I was surprised how well some games held up.
My PS3 is still in my entertainment system but it sadly had to be unplugged and relegated to the bottom shelf to make room for the PS5.
When I move into a new place in the future I really need to invest in a bigger setup. A lot of my older consoles are being boxed back up to make room.
As it’s my households main bluray device. Yes, I’m definitely going to have to download this when I get home ._.
I use it almost more than ps4. Playing dvds/blu-rays, playing WH Kill Team, Puzzle Quest Galactrix, Guitar Heroes, Dooms, Dragon Ages... so much games... truth is, I have finished maybe more games on PS4, but PS3 delivers more fun.
@naruball I like playing the House of The Dead games with those, RE5 played pretty good with them as well
I've been playing Rage on PS3 recently. In total, it's probably been my most play console this year.
@carlos82 nice setup dude.
I still play my ps3 semi-regularly. I have an embarrassingly large backlog going back to launch and including a number of digital ps1 and ps2 classics. I think it's a great console but I'm sad that I have to use the slim and my phat sits in a box following it's untimely death. Would like to fix it one day but not sure if there's a point.
While everyone raging about the Ps5 and everything im sitting here thinking about pluging back in my ps3. Seems like im not the only one whoses thought that.
My wife uses it to play exercise DVDs a few times a week. The 2nd one in our bedroom - that super slim sliding cover model - hasn't been used in awhile though. I bought it mostly for streaming and discs but have since bought a Fire stick which is just easier, and we don't play all that many discs these days. I should probably trade 1 of them in towards a PS5 but I'm too lazy.
I recently upgraded mine to an SSD.
I still use it sometimes. Since the PS3 bc is not practical, it is the only way for me to play PS3 games. I also use it for PS2 games although many of those have been made available on other platforms.
I softmodded mine to play around with the different functionalities there, so I guess I won't be using this new functionality
@Richnj
RAGE is the main reason I hold onto my PS3.
I wonder if they will stop the DualSense from working.
Is sadly still Sony's best multimedia player to this day so I have it connected, have hundreds of videos and music stored in the system.
I still have my PS3 hooked up and play it on occasion, but my Dualshock 3s are starting to fail. All analog stick related. The older controller's sticks are very loose and the newer one had really bad drift issues. I opened it up to try to fix it, but now it doesn't work at all.
I was surprised to learn how difficult it is to get a new PS3 compatible gamepad. New DS3s on ebay are mostly fake and the third party options are just not good. I bought the GameSir G4s which works great on mobile, but on PS3 there's noticably increased input lag. I could use a Dualshock 4, but then I have to sacrifice rumble. And who knows how much longer this console is going to last. As it is, this unit replaced my launch system which died of ylod (was a sad day when I had to trade it + $100 to Sony for the Slim model).
This is just another example of why backwards compatibility is important.
I actually still use my PS3, two weeks ago I started Red Dead on it for the first time. I also use it to stream tv when I play PS4. So I'll take a more stability, why not lol
I’m still using it daily least I was till ps5 came out , it’s my most beloved PlayStation - the titles are cheap the Ui is nice it’s still a cracking bluray and dvd player - plus it’s damn sexy
@mcdreamer persona 3 should be downloadable from the ps store I do like physical copies but if you prefer it cheaper do that I got very far in p3 and stopped playing also barely started p4 4 years ago was meaning to come back at some stage
What I played on PS3 in 2020:
Adventure Time: Secret of the Nameless Kingdom
Batman Arkham Asylum
Batman Arkham Origins
Bioshock
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1)
Dead Space
Dead Space 2: Severed DLC
Dead Space 3: Awakened DLC
Dead Space: Ignition
Enslaved
God of War: Ghost of Sparta HD
Resident Evil 5
Yeah I definitely still play it a lot, hahaha...
Playing Ni No Kuni and NCAA Football 14 regularly these days.
Also, shout out to the exercise games on PS3 like Fit in Six, EA Active 2 (though it needs the bands), etc. PS4 has almost nothing and what it does have is kind of sad (looking at you Yoga Master)
My kids still play games on the PS3 all the time, and we use it as our #2 Blu Ray/DVD player (after the PS4). My original one died after four years, sadly, but this one has been kicking for a decade of continuous use.
@everynowandben I just started Enslaved; the graphics are shaky but the action is cracking. Cheers!
I actually do use mine so I can play PS1 games through HDMI
@xDD90x
I have a PDP Battlefield 4 licensed controller. It’s USB only, but that’s understandable given its being sold as an FPS-friendly pad. It’s a good controller, quite compact and the build is absolutely solid, not like the creaky DS3. The trigger buttons are metal and it has two programmable scroll wheels on the back that also click in, effectively providing six extra buttons that can be programmed.
On release this controller received a couple of poor reviews, but I honestly can’t see why, it is far, far better than any DS3 copy.
@Badheelman Nice! Despite the screen tearing and frame rate issues, Enslaved is a pretty dang good game overall, and certainly worth your time to finish. Hopefully Ninja Theory returns to the franchise one day and makes a sequel!
I want to get a PS3 to play Red Dead Redemption and Metal Gear Solid 4 which I have never played.
Now this is weird concept of having to update the PS3 to keep watching movies. I had this problem back in the day when I bought my dad a PS3. He lives out in Spain and didn't have internet at home back then. One day it just stopped playing his blu-rays and being useless with technology had no clue how to fix it.
Solution was to buy a USB dongle, go to internet cafe, go to Sony site, download the update file and store it in a specific folder structure, then go through the upload process on the PS3.
No chance he could figure that out himself! Do all stand alone blu-ray players have this issue as well?
Still have to get through God of War Ascension and also never played the Jak HD Trilogy or the Biohazard Selection I bought, even though I did the ps2 versions so will get through those at some point.
@Vacuumator Good to know. Thanks!
My ps3 is great and far quite than ps4 and it plays music cd's lol
@carlos82 Like your setup looks really clean.
PS3 (the original 60GB model) is still the only way to play all PS1-3 games on 1 system.
Still have my PS3 set up next to my PS5, still play it. Was playing God of War 2 remastered the other week and Dantes inferno.
Still use it regularly, yes. I have a massive backlog of PS3 games I need to get to. Infact, today I started Enslaved Odyssey to the West, which I had, brand new and sealed for years. Looking forward to it since it is described as a hidden gem by many.
I still use it semi-regularly, last used it to play through the Costume Quest series
I use mines for GTA IV & Episodes and the Ratchet and Clank collection
I play Civilization revolution almost everyday, i think i'm actually addicted.
Also playing Blag Flag.
I bet Sony and publishers could actually still make some decent money from the store if anyone managed it, i'd take the UK job for commission only. Not everyone can afford newer systems, it would be interesting to know how many active users there still are out there.
Not plugged in anymore, but i will hold on to it just as i do with all my retro systems. I have lots of games for them and like to keep 'em out of nostalgia i guess..Not only PlayStation but also Nintendo🙂
I still use mine, it’s the system I collect physical games for the most, the collection must be approaching 200 now. I also recently upgraded to an SSD in a somewhat vain attempt to prolong the lifespan - I've already had two systems fail on me. With an SSD it runs even quieter than the PS5.
It's a great system to collect for, as most games are relatively cheap to get hold of and charity shops are always full of bargains.
As the system is not that old, the condition of secondhand games and peripherals is generally quite good. I recall seeing the state of most PS2 games in CEX and wondering how they can even sell most of them in the state they are.
I also recently bought a PlayStation Eye, so I have been buying a few Move games to try out.
@carlos82 nice setup you have there! 👍👍👍👍
Still use mine, it's a regular fixture for me and my two kids as we battle each other in Worms! They still get annoyed by how proficient I am with with the Super Sheep! Haha!
@get2sammyb you're article inspired me to track down an OG 60B model to replace mine which YLOD'd many years back (and which I replaced with a special edition Ni No Kuni Slim edition... for my kids yknow).
@carlos82 Yup. Been playing those games with different people for years now (first it was my best friend and now now my niece who's 10). So much fun.
The 5GB PS3 slim is in use for Bluray, the PS3 mid slim is in the drawer, hopefully in order. The PS3 Fat (bread bin)version is kaput but standing in the livingroom as 'decoration'. Also got a super slim PS2 (the size of a coaster), but not used it in years. And I could go on... but won't
Yay, now my Slim is stuck in an upgrade failed reboot loop. I can't seem to get it into Safe mode even. :/
My PS3 is hooked up to my projector to play 3d blurays. I tried my ps5 but it wont play em. Typical Sony!
There's some good stereoscopic 3d games on PS3, and as far as I know, none of note on PS4. Mine stays hooked up until there's a new Motorstorm or HD Collection.
The console was great not my favorite but Heavenly Sword and Valkyria Chronicles those were on of my favorite games and Killzone 3 i love that one so much. But man i dont miss the UI it sucks.
Still using all my consoles. Trophy hunting and 100% old games and new
Used mine last night to watch a dvd while the PS4 was downloading Just Cause 4
My PS3 slim still gets active use; it was bought a decade ago and thanks to PS+ and crazy store store-buying madness over the years I’ve still got a shedload of games I want to play on it.
A great machine!
@carlos82 Your collection is beautiful, any plans to add a PS2 console?
@KidBoruto actually since I took this picture I've added a launch model PS2, a CRT and a few more games
@carlos82 I've been thinking about buying a PS2 again, hopefully the used market prices are reasonable.
wut? i didnt know the blue ray player in it was limited to certain blurays. kinda lame. also lol to the security fix. like yay? dont think it benefits anyone other than sony.
@wiiware if you sold your ps3 there is no point to hold on to your ps3 games then. a mistake imo u should have never sold it.
@twitchtvpat I have a lot of digital ps1/ps2/ps3 games, it will be cool to play it again on ps4/ps5 if the console supported it, although I'm fine with only ps1/ps2 digital support. Already sold all of my physical ps3 disc.
