Sony has today deployed a surprise PlayStation 5 firmware update, bringing the OS up to version 21.01-30.10.00. It's a bit of a mouthful and weighs in at 902.3MB, so the patch won't keep you away from your games for too long. However, what does this latest update do? It's nowhere near as important as the previous firmware update, we're afraid to report.
The single patch note reads:
- This system software update improves system performance.
There may be some hidden changes and features under the hood that Sony hasn't detailed as part of this update, so if that's the case, we'll be sure to cover them here on the site. What minor improvements would you like to see? List them in the comments below.

Hope it addresses the Dualsense battery percentage icon that was mentioned in the previous update but didn't show up
I'm hoping this will fix my PS5 randomly going into rest mode. It worked fine until the last update.
Hope it stops that annoying pop up every time i use the media remote to turn on ps5 and go straight to a media app that says system cannot find saved data in cloud storage. Freaks me out that my SSD is corrupted every time
But what about stability?
@SoulChimera I found that since the last update hdmi link finally started working and turning on the tv will turn the ps5 as well (which is something I did not want 😂). Maybe your issues are related to those options? You have to check the hdmi options on both ends, maybe you swith to another source and your tv puts the ps5 into rest mode? Just spitballing...
@TheDudeElDuderino Thanks for the help. I did try that, I also tried a different HDMI cable incase it was that (As I'm not using the official one because my PS5 is more than 3 cm away from my TV. Haha).
No luck so far.
I had my first worrying issue yesterday with my Dualsense controllers having no battery even though they were both fully charged and one of them was even plugged into the PS5 in rest mode.
It can't have been the controllers cause they were both at 0%. I can only think that the PS5 was draining them somehow in rest mode. I hope this is fixed with this update, to be honest I've barely used rest mode after all the scare stories and left it in rest overnight by accident this time.
Strange, PS5 tells me that there issnt an new Update
Really hoping one of these updates eliminates the obnoxious disc drive noises.
@JapaneseSonic Thanks, I'll take a look when I get home tonight!
Mmmm delicious stability
@FatalBubbles
I’ve found that the disc spinning is much quieter now to the point of being almost inaudible for me. That is apart from when you first start up the ps5 if a disc is in, then it seems to have that very loud drive spin as a one off. Which is still annoying.
@Grumblevolcano
PlayStation doesn’t need stability improvements anymore, not since they decided to include the stand.
I hope this update hides the code to unlock the extra internal M.2 Slot for extra storage, I'm really strugling with storage RN and using an external regular USB storage simply makes no sense at all for me , so with some luck we will be getting this feature unlocked in the next state of play on the 29th of April .
@thefourfoldroot Sorry, my comment was unclear. I was referring to the initial startup and the hourly drive check. They’re both annoying but otherwise you’re correct, it’s more or less silent.
Has anyone noticed that since the last update and not this one that the dualsense controller battery life doesn't last as long? Mine doesn't seem to last as long since the last update for the controller.
The update to unlock second ssd probably won't be til late Summer. I don't have any ps5 games anyway. Most of mines are ps4 . First ps5 game I'm getting is probably be new ratchet and clank
@Atreus97 it works on mine. It has a green charging icon and shows the current charge.
I wish they’d allow more than one USB drive to be connected, stupid that the limit is one.
This update has fixed the twitter video upload issue I was having. Since the previous update WEBM videos couldn't be shared to twitter. https://www.reddit.com/r/playstation/comments/mrsy43/cant_upload_to_social_media_on_ps5_ce1169007/
Previous update added a really cool feature - randomly after waking up console from sleep mode, the left and right movement doesn't work in main menu. When you press the PS button and the menu from bottom shows up, it works there so I have to put it to sleep and wake again. Sometimes it takes one try, other times two. Hope it will soon be fixed.
I just want folder back man, I want to organize my indies, metroidvania, exclusive, and AAA games.
@FatalBubbles
I know. The start up is still loud, but the hourly drive check is practically inaudible to me since the last update.
I've had a weird bug occasionally, where the X button stops working on the UI. I can still move left and right, just can't select anything. I can bring up the menu to turn the thing off, and I can select things on that menu to restart the machine (or even just rest and turn back on) but it's a weird annoyance
Ever since the last update, I can't share to Twitter, not even 15 second clips. Hopefully this update will fix that.
@Snake_V5 OMG yes! I was just about to post this. Ever since the big update a few weeks backs my controller def doesn't last as long (and this is a new controller since the one that came with the console is currently with them being fixed for drifting already)
@PaperAlien Glad I'm not the only one. I could use the controller before for about 4 hours and still have 2 blocks left.
@Gamer83 I had this.. I had a twitter account just for sharing screenshots (it had a number of followers for some reason lol) but Twitter suspended it because of "harmful and graphic images" All I did was take Screenshots of No Mans Sky and Destiny 2! So make sure your twitter account is fine.
@God_of_Nowt that's a really nice insider info 😉
I agree with Wiiware! I miss having my games grouped into four different folders. The hide games option helps, but I still feel like I’m sorting through my epic games library.
It’s also frustrating that rest mode messes up my downloads on HDD when I used to do it all the time.
Hopefully they change the setup when you view the game base so that if shows your online friends first versus showing parties. Gets annoying toggling over after awhile
Quick question to you guys or i guess to any one who has the media remote . Have any of you been finding that the ps5 would randomly just turn on if the media remote was near by . The other day my ps5 just kept turning its self on and I couldn't figure out why so after a bunch of trial and error I decided I'd see what happens if I take the battery out of the remote and sure enough no more random boot ups. I've had the remote since launch and it only just started happening . Any one else experience this?
@Otherbarry I don't have a media remote but maybe one of the buttons is a bit dodgy? Has happened to me with TV remotes in the past. TV appeared to turn on for no reason, cause, kids with sticky fingers...
@PaperAlien
Yeah Twitter is weird sometimes but I know my account is good. I use it a lot for gaming and non-gaming related stuff and I was sharing a ton of PS5 clips since November right up until the last update, that's when the trouble started.
@Otherbarry Yes! I had that happen several times. If it was sitting on my couch when I would sit down or stand up the PS5 would turn on. I moved the media remote off the couch to an end table and no issues since.
I'd like custom themes and i would also like to have custom avatars..i know that your close friends can see the custom avatar you can make via a usb stick but it would be nice to be able to choose your own image and not the awful sony offerings...
Waking up from the rest mode still hhas a lot of glitches.
Hope this update fix them at least partially.
@SJBUK thats what i had initially thought . I checked over the buttons I even used a small flathead screwdriver to see if I needed to pop out the PS button but it was already up as high as it goes . You are right though with kids and sticky fingers. They just can't be trusted lol
@God_of_Nowt I might try that . Not since the days of my old NES did I feel the need to smack my electronics around. Funny how sometimes the most basic of answers is usely the one that works lol.
@FatalBubbles that's even stranger to me that just removing it from the room solves the problem. I'll put the battery back in and see if that helps . It's still just weird that I've had it from launch have barely used it and it's just now acting up. Ah well thanks for the input in any case .
@God_of_Nowt pff I do love technical info, but it's really difficult to get some factual data regarding the hardware, software, etc of the PS5... Sony is not saying much, so there you have "...it can't do 4bit operations..." and that kind of stuff. For sure I didn't knew that parts of the system (other than the fans) could be "adapted" on a game by game basis... so how the I/O subsystem can be tweaked ? I would have guessed any "tweak" a dev may need (like, say, reading in different block sizes) would be done through the I/O API (or whatever)... Oh I've so many many questions ; )
When I first got my PS5 (mid December) there was a bug where the system wouldn't resume after going into rest mode due to x hours inactivity. I read some accounts of PS5s being bricked by so turned auto rest mode off to protect The Precious.
I quite like the feature and would like to turn it back on. Does anyone know if the bug has been fixed, or if the brickery was just a myth?
@Otherbarry Sorry for any confusion. I didn’t have to take it out of the room. I just moved it off the couch. For whatever reason, it moving when I sat down or got up was the trigger.
I just did the update now(10.24pm UK time) and all my Trophies are missing? And it says on the Network bit 'PlayStation Network - Failed'??? Hmm I don't know why? It says to that PSN is ok. Very odd. Never had this problem before.
It broke several things for me. It wont shows friends list ,let me hide games I don't use or show trophies. All I get is something went wrong error. Or it could be PSN is having issues. NVM. PSN is messed up.
@FatalBubbles lol no worries man . And that's even stronger honestly lol . As an update i have put the battery's back in and so far it's been ok . So who knows lol
I never update til my online games force me to update my system. I really need a backup ps5 in case it gets hacked one day.
I am hoping for the end of that dang "LAN cable disconnected," "LAN cable connected" cyclical error.
Ah! I see Sony is taking a page out of Nintendo's book. Oh that sweet, sweet, stability!
