Dutch developer Nixxes is the latest team to join the PlayStation Studios family, where it’ll serve as a support group for first-party firms like Insomniac, Santa Monica Studio, and Naughty Dog. But despite having a close relationship with Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics, it’s also helped out Sony in the past – namely Guerrilla Games when it shipped Killzone: Shadow Fall on the PlayStation 4.
“[Boss Jurjen Katsman] and Nixxes helped Guerrilla Games ship Killzone: Shadow Fall in time for PS4 launch,” wrote PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst. “We already enjoyed working with them back then!” Many expect the studio to work on ports of PlayStation franchises to PC given its history, but equally likely is that it will have its fingers in many pies, acting as support for all PlayStation Studios wherever needed.
Hulst said recently that Sony won’t “randomly” acquire studios, and while Nixxes fits a different profile to, say, Housemarque, it’s clear that there is already a relationship between PlayStation and the Utrecht outfit. We’re excited to see how it leverages its unique technical specialties to help improve the output of the platform holder’s first-party.

There was also a tweet from Remedy’s Thomas Puha calling them “some of the best rendering engineers and coders in the business”. Sounds like they’re just very proficient on the technical side and will help Sony games development in any way that needs it (possibly including but not limited to PC ports)
I hope Sony goes full speed into the PC ports. I’ve already bought 2 PS5s but if they make the transition I sure as hell won’t buy a PS5 Pro or PS6.
I bought 2 systems based on my history with Sony, but they are pushing me to PC. That could be what they want. They would still get my software sales, but lose my future system purchases.
There goes my PS5 purchase. Thank you Hermen for pushing me to upgrade my PC.
@OmegaStriver Just stick to PC.
Even if this is just to port games to pc it will save studios having to do it themselves or helping others they have outsourced too. It does sound like this might be just to increase efficiency and if that's the case only good for us getting games through development quicker.
In fairness to Sony game division they have to start thinking about the future and what the gaming world will be like 5 to 10 years from now.
They know what Microsoft are up to and the mega money they have free to spend on creating a massive Xbox ecosystem across all platforms and full cloud gaming.
Even though the PS5 will bring them success this generation, they future wise could get in a hard spot strategy wise.
It’s not easy when you up against a trillion dollar company with the best cloud severs in the world and especially has they seem to have started to those series dollars at the Xbox ecosystem.
Even if it's just for PC ports it could take a lot of the load off in house first party studios to dedicate their resources to that stuff in tandem with new games like what we saw with Horizon. Sony clearly has taken note of how Microsoft is banking off of both the console and PC market and probably don't want to waste that opportunity for more $$$
They could also assist with helping said studios leverage the tech for other games specifically made for the console hardware
Of course I think they are probably underrated studio. I'm sure they ll have a hand in many things.
@Dezzy70 Which Is Why They Should Be Building Up PS Now Rather Then Doing Normal PC Ports.
@Play I haven’t bought a PC yet. I’ve always gamed on consoles but with Microsoft doing a full jump to PC and now Sony is kinda doing the same, it’s making me think about it. Why not when you can play all games on one device?
@Areus
Every Sony fanboy thinks Sony gaming division is untouchable in the game market, which with the PS4 it was and still is at the moment.
But the Walkman and TV history is starting to show in the gaming division.
The once top tv brand, lacked investment and went all anti consumer and the 2 big South Korean companies stepped in and are now number one and two in the tv market.
Offering just as good top end TVs, with better modern technology VVR, ALLM, more hdmi 2.1 sockets and at a slightly better price. Just look at the 2021 tv range.
Sony even have to buy OLED panels from them.
Seems like the right move. Really think Herman was the right person to lead the way for the future of PlayStation. People need to do there research and review the PowerPoint slide that was shown to investors a few months ago (on SIE website). Hardware in the next 5-6 years won't be anywhere near profitable or wanted compared to software. Software is key, whether it's being played on PlayStation for console players or PC, it's all one family. People have to start seeing this.
@mrtennis1990 sure but they only make a small amount of money with first party Games in comparsion to 3rd Party Software sold on their consoles. So the fewer people buy consoles bc they port everything to PC the less money they will make overall
Sony isn’t gonna port all their ps4 games on pc at once Sony will probably be slow maybe 2 or 3 ps4 games release on pc a year sound about right. AS long as Sony keep the ps5 exclusives exclusive to the ps5 until almost end of the generation than starting porting some of them over to pc when the ps6 about to come out.
@IonMagi that's a great point
@snowfreak2574 more like 3 to 4 years.
@4kgk2 Day and date starts next year, just you wait.
This, Housemarque and sancho have made my week
PC ports are OK. It's not a war between PC and console(s). You buy whatever platform you can or want. A console gives you some nice hard for small money but then it locks you in. Now I do have a PC with a 3070… oculus quest2… XSX and PS5. Thing is, oculus is quite expensive for buying games. PS5 is very expensive, I think I bought a single game. Xbox... Well, game pass is amazing and even game prices are a joke against PSN... Sometimes it's half the price or even 10% of what Sony asks for the same game. Then Steam is really cheap... I have like 30 VR games and maybe I can't even pay a full PS5 game with the money spent on 30 steam titles. So options are always good. I do love the PS but I cannot afford to spend 35/70 usd on each game. No way. So I think I will play on Xbox or PC 🤦... Until a PSN sale 🤣
@theMEGAniggle SANCHO! 🙌
Killzone SF released pretty polished and was honestly probably my favorite Multiplayer game of last generation unfortunately it died too fast and probably won't get another entry which sucks
i'll take a new killzone game please
@get2sammyb United finally a serious club
I'm happy for fellow PC gamers that want to play PS exclusives...but I'll stick to my PS5 and beyond until they stop making consoles.
I wonder if Nixxes are co-developing the PS4 version of Forbidden West, like they did Rise of the Tomb Raider for 360.
