We're heading into the end-of-year awards season, and the first major event is GamesRadar's 39th annual Golden Joysticks.
This awards process is quite different from most other major ceremonies, as the vast majority of categories are voted on by the public rather than an official committee. On that note, voting is now open through here, and will close on 5th November at 11pm GMT.
There's a pretty even spread of games among this year's nominations. Unless we've counted incorrectly, it appears that PlayStation 5 console exclusive Deathloop is up for the most trophies, with five nominations including Best Multiplayer, Best Performer, and Ultimate Game of the Year. Close behind is Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, which is up for Best Visual Design, PlayStation Game of the Year, and Ultimate Game of the Year, while Jennifer Hale may claim Best Performer for Rivet. Resident Evil Village is also nominated four times — Best Audio, PlayStation Game of the Year, Ultimate Game of the Year, and Best Performer for Maggie Robertson's Lady Dimitrescu.
Other Sony highlights include Returnal, up for Best Audio and PlayStation Game of the Year, Dreams with a nod in Best Community, and Ghost of Tsushima's Iki Island expansion has been nominated for, well, Best Expansion.
Here's the full list of nominees. Which games are getting your votes? Tell us in the comments section below.

Wow, interesting to see Returnal snubbed for Game of the Year. All great games there of course though. Part of me feels that Mass Effect shouldn’t count as it’s a remaster.
Between the PlayStation exclusives for GOTY, I'll have to pick Returnal over Ratchet and Clank. Thought technically Ratchet and Clank was fantastic but the gameplay loop was a little...meh. Returnal on the other hand...
"12 minutes" for best storytelling?
Are they having a laugh there?
Metroid Dread should win Game of the Year. It deserves it.
For PlayStation though, as much as Death Stranding is my favorite game of all time, it seems ridiculous to nominate it. I’m rooting for Village there.
@Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy Oh god, I didn’t even see that. I’d go as far as to say that game has the worst storytelling of any game I’ve ever had the misfortune of playing. I literally cannot put into words the sheer disdain I have for that game.
Finished Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart to Platin just 2 days ago. I enjoyed it so much. Maybe not game of the year. But so great in Gameplay and graphics.
I thought you might have some things to say about that @nessisonett.... 😉
@somnambulance it doesn't. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart deserves it.
Psychonauts 2 up for game of the year but no tales of Arise or Kena Bridge of spirits 😑
Has to be between Ratchet and clank and resident evil village
Also a specific consoles games of the year should surely be exclusives......
Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, Returnal, Deathloop or FIST, which isn't to be found on here, are favs this year.
An SSD as a choice for best gaming hardware? Multiplatform games only nominated for one platform? All seems a bit wonky to me.
As for the best game I've played this year I'd say its Resident Evil Village
I have to agree that 12 Minutes in storytelling is cray cray. That "twist" jeeeeeez...
Haven't yet played any new release from this year so can't vote.
Mass Effect LE I have played, the first two anyway, and whilst it's brilliant I'm not sure how it can be nominated for GotY. A remake can be (Resi 2, FFVII) but not a remaster.
I really really hope Psychonauts 2 wins at least something!
I only played two of the games on the game of the year list. Ratchet and Mass Effect. Ratchet is great but not my GOTY and while Mass Effect was a very well done collection it's still a remaster of 3 old games so it shouldn't qualify.
Personally my top three this year are probably
1. Lost Judgment
2. Scarlet Nexus
3. Persona 5 Strikers
Tales of Arise totally snubbed.
@naruball Rift Apart was good, and it was certainly the most highly polished game this year, but I respectfully disagree that it’s the best game this year. For me, it was a blast to play and it was really, really good, but it felt very familiar and simple, as well. I’d still call Rift Apart a 9/10, but it didn’t quite have that special something that Dread had for me. There’s a handful of games I liked better than Rift Apart, personally. Dread, however, felt absolutely as the definitive game of its genre
The console game of the year awards are all over the place. So can you not play re8 on xbox, and not play lost judgement on ps5.....
Wildermyth and Death's Door are great little games.
I say of the games I have played for game of the year (Psychonauts 2, Resident Evil Village, Ratchet and Clank, Wildermyth, It Takes Two, Metroid Dread)
I say RE:Village comes on top in my book.
@somnambulance
I got Metroid Dread yesterday from GameFly. Played 2 hrs and I guess this is for the Returnal fan base. Because I have better things to do with my time after work than get killed by Steve Jobs's Apple Dog 5 times 🐶😅
I mean not given up yet - but if all like this It will be going back.
I actually had a smile and having "Fun" playing Ratchet and Clank from the very start.
@nessisonett I haven't played 12 minutes yet is it really that bad
Ratchet and clank and returnal will be nominated for games awards game of the year.word up son
Resident evil village is definitely my game of the year one of the few games I've replayed immediately after completing it
@Would_you_kindly Let’s just say they might as well have made ‘Lovely Jubbly: A Jimmy Savile VR Experience’ and that would have been less tasteless.
@Agramonte Metroid Dread definitely has teeth. If you’re already struggling with it, it’s maybe not for you. But if you develop the taste for the challenge of it, you’ll be hooked. I was smiling a lot during time playing Dread and having a lot of fun, but I like to embrace that style of challenge. It’s a different kind of fun from Ratchet and Clank, for sure.
Overall, I’d say it was much easier than Returnal was though. Returnal was a real challenge by the end of my time with it.
RE Village is my GOTY as it was incredible, shame Returnal was snubbed though.
@nessisonett I played it completely unaware of what happened and yeah, i'm not against this subject matter being explored in gaming but i dunno it felt more like it was there for shock value and providing a big twist then being thoughtful about it.
@WallyWest That’s the problem, I’m totally in favour of mature themes in games but they have to be given the thought and sensitivity that they’re due. They saw the target and didn’t just miss the mark, they shot themselves in the foot.
Should Mass Effect really be in the running for GOTY since it's still just a remaster? It definitely seems like Tales of Arise got shafted in favor of that.
Returnal not in the running for Game of the Year is an absolute joke. Meanwhile Mass Effect is on there for a remaster of a series that old? Game of the year 2021? Pure sillyness.
Insomniac should be nominated for studio of the year
There’s only one game of the year and that’s Returnal. End of.
Ratchet and Clank deserves PlayStation game of the year along with Kena Bridge of Spirits but ofc you can only pick one making it a hard choice.
Nintendo GOTY I think should go to Metroid Dread or New Pokemon Snap. They're all good games but these are the ones I enjoyed the most.
Well for me playstation game of year was between returnal and kena but I think returnal just edges it. Ultimate game of year had to go ratchet as returnal was not there. Best indie I gave to deaths door such a great game. And Xbox game of year went for artful escape another great little game.
Village is my goty, I've replayed it so many times that I've memorized most of the dialogue 🙂
Give everything to Arkane & Deathloop!
Is this a joke? No Returnal for "Ultimate Game of the Year" (what a silly title by the way). Whatever.... Returnal was my Game of the Year.
This list of nominees seems so arbitrary. I agree with some of the picks but it feels coincidental more than anything. Ff7R interwhatever best dlc?? Some of this feels like they ran out of candidates and just nominated anything.
Except Elijah Wood. CLEARLY Nick Johnsmith is the most incredible performance (and musical performance) in 2021 gaming, by far. Everybody loves Nick!
Resident evil village and ratchet & clank rift apart is my choice for goty, deathloop got good score but it seems it gamers didn't care too much about it, it only sells on the first weeks and gone on the second weeks. I don't know it got that many awards 😕
Returnal is good but at the 10 hour I realize I'm basically playing the same 3 stage over and over again and the reason it's a roguelite game is because the devs only make 3 stage (with variations).
These "nominations" make no sense for about 180 different reasons. Best Playstation game... Resident Evil: Village? What? So that isn't a multiplatform game? Could've replaced that game with any other console exclusive... Destruction All-Stars, GoT: Director's Cut, and others aren't mentioned.
I could go on and on about the inconsistencies, but then I'd be in danger of putting more thought into it then whoever threw these lists together.
Mobile: Fantasian
Switch: Dread
PS5: RE Village
But really whats more shocking is that after a whole year of next-gen consoles we had only meh games. Nothing really next-gen to be awed...
Not really feeling RE: Village for GOTY. I felt like story wise the it was just okay, gameplay was definitely on point and so were the graphics.
Feel like IO interactive should get the nod for developer of the year.
And Old World is a dope game!! Hopefully it wins.
The lack of Nier is shocking.
Best performer? Nisa Gunduz as Dani Rojas
@dimi Ratchet & Clank most certainly was next generation (or current, since the new generation is already here).
GTA 5 Enhanced Edition (cash grab), as most wanted game?! Ahahahahahahahahaahahahahaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh!
@oconnoclast 100%... that is why I mentioned Returnal. Another 1st party exclusive that was not for me.
Also why 3rd party support is so important. The more choices the better. Not everyone plays the same things.
I am 22hrs into FarCry6 with my cousin. Having Tales of Arise, Lost Judgement and Metroid Dread in a row on my list... I needed a New Co-Op game I can play with someone else also.
