Sifu has always looked unforgiving in its various gameplay trailers, and now it's been confirmed that the game won't have difficulty options — at least not at launch. Speaking to MP1st, producer Pierre Tarno said that difficulty settings may be something that's added later on.
"We want Sifu to challenge players and to encourage them to learn, improve and adapt. The ability to rise up from death will help new players by allowing them to fail and try again multiple times when they face difficulty. But the price of mistakes will rapidly increase, and in order to fully complete the game they will have to master the combat system," Tarno explained when asked about Sifu's difficulty.
Clearly, Sifu is designed to be a title that kicks your arse until you get to grips with its in-depth combat system. And on top of that, its unique ageing mechanic sees the protagonist grow older as you're beaten down. Something tells us that it won't be an easy game.

I’ll need to know how difficult it is on a scale of 1 to Kena: Bridge of Spirits on Master difficulty (😫).
This could go one of two ways. The difficulty could be specifically designed to the point of being balanced and enjoyable. Or the difficulty could alienate players and just cause them to drop off early.
Difficulty options or otherwise, I cannot wait to play Sifu on PS5!
I like challenging games. im used to it.so i welcome this .sifu is like sleeping dogs.the combat remind me so much of the excellent sleeping dogs.word up son
That's fine. I'd rather they fine-tune one difficulty than spend resources and effort juggling multiple ones with mixed results.
Hope they’re not going the FromSoftware route and alienate players who can’t be bothered/ain’t got time to “git gud” 🙄
Sounds like that's me getting my arse kicked for hours until I actually learn how to play it then!
@nessisonett yeah, this went from "interesting, maybe I'll buy it at launch" to "Huh, I'll wait for reviews to work out how much of a sale to wait for" within the space of a headline.
I have mentioned this here before, but I have a strange gaming quirk where difficulty options stress me out. I always worry a little about getting the best experience and how my choice of difficulty is going to impact that. So it is actually kind of a relief to me whenever developers have no difficulty options-I know I am playing exactly as intended.
To be clear: I am generally all for gamer choice and have no beef with difficulty options. I just find starting a game more relaxing when I don't have to choose the difficulty.
February is Horizon FW time, but I will def. play Sifu down the line.........
It becomes more difficult as you get older I bet. Real men play on Hard; I always crank it up. Only to be denied a gold trophy on completion anyway but it’s the way to go. If I get stuck and can’t roll it back then there’s problems
If done correctly then this is exactly what i’d want from this type of game.
It always struck me and a game you need to master
@SystemAddict ‘Real men play on Hard’ is the saddest indictment I’ve seen yet on the state of modern masculinity. Imagine being so insecure in your masculinity that you have to go on about playing difficult video games. Surely using that logic, macho men play Osu or Dance Dance Revolution, which are much harder tests of dexterity than games like this? Real men flail about to the dulcet tones of Aqua’s Barbie Girl.
LOL well that fell fast quite quick 🙄🙄 good luck to the masochists, enjoy your game.
@nessisonett 😅 come on Nessie you big Jessie, oh-o-oh
@SystemAddict what on earth? why do you have that strange individual as your avatar? 🤭🤭🤭
@huyi Mariah, you’re on fiyah
It's their game. They have the right to make it however they want.
And I have the right to spend my money elsewhere.
I always play on hard. Can't wait to be an old sifu kicking everyone's ass.
I have this strange urge to watch Oldboy again...
I expect it to start off easy and get progressively more difficult the further I get into the game.
I don't care about difficulty settings, so I will play it either way. The game looks great and up my alley.
Can’t wait! This has been on my radar since it’s first reveal and I’m only getting more excited!
I can't wait for the speedruns on this one..
.. and to play it!
I'll keep watch to see if difficulty options are added as much as I like the premise of the game and its mechanics, I don't really want to potentially spend hours being stuck on one part of the game or even end up not being able to finish it.
"Git gud" ain't a mentality I subscribe to in single player games.
I have a terrible feeling about this game. Really hope I'm wrong
@fR_eeBritney Haha, I only played kena on normal mode and some of the bosses were a nightmare on that. I do want to give it a go on master difficulty but think I would just cry lol.
Looking forward to this game if th difficulty is done right and the game is enjoyable then don't mind, something along the lines of returnal hard but fair and enjoyable 😁
It's their choice, but I don't exactly agree with it. There's the argument people make with really difficult games that they are meant to be difficult and you have to git gud. It's a shame though if it's something that looks really intriguing, as really difficult games just aren't my thing. It's not that I'm lazy or am not any good at any games. I only have so much time to play each day and I'd rather be having fun than having my blood boil and want to toss the controller over and over again.
If people like the extreme challenge, great, but there should also be an option for people if they just want to experience the game without the frustrations. It's even worse in my opinion with a game like this that's an indie game. Basically alienating some people from this game because there's no Easy difficulty could hurt the game, especially since this automatically crosses the game off my list no matter how good it turns out to be, and I'm not alone.
@Daleaf OMG it’s awful 🤣 I did my first playthrough on ‘Story’ mode (the shame!) but even that wasn’t a walk in the park. Felt like ‘Normal’ mode compared to other games.
I was expecting a huge bump in difficulty on ‘Master’ mode but this is just too much 😱 I thought I was doing ok until I got to the Wood Guardian boss (quite early in the game). I can’t bloody do it 😩 It might be the most difficult game I’ve ever played.
I’ve been trying to find tips on Reddit tonight and people are saying it’s harder than the Souls games. Never played a Souls game but this is tough! Don’t let that cute, Disney/Pixar facade fool you.
Anyway, I’ve decided not to pursue the platinum on this occasion... for the good of my health and my sanity 🤪
@playstation1995 Sleeping Dogs need a PS5 patch word up son.
I appreciate game that have one difficultly. It forces the player to be persistent and learn the mechanics.
@Futureshark Like every game ever made.
@Westernwolf4 I suggest always playing on hard then for most AAA games. You’ll get the best experience because almost all AAA games pander to the widest audience.
With indie games it’s a different story - much more varied difficulty levels.
@AK4tywill sleeping dogs is amazing the ps4 version is really good.all i want is a sleeping dogs sequel.word up son
Their last game Absolver was no walk in the park. I expect this will have a similar difficulty.
Game looks dope, but
I’m not a brawler fan, or button combo fan.
@fR_eeBritney Wow yea that does sound like it's a bit too much. Might give it a go at some point when I'm feeling brave haha. Yea that wood guardian was tough on normal anyway. I think the plat for this will be a no for me too to be honest.
Binding of Isaac, and Returnal do not have a difficulty option… you can go harder.. just like Hades (though that has God mode)
The fact your character changes as you die, I imagine that’s the games way of altering the difficulty. The older character, may not move as fast… but will know more moves.. I’m really looking forward to it
@Arnna I agree. I am a terrible gamer, but I play most games on whatever one step above normal setting is. I agonize for a time first however. 😃
I dont think it'll be that hard , should be fine
Good. I've preordered and I’m looking forward to the challenge!
Considering some of my favs are brutal....God of War, Hotline Miami, Returnal, Katana Zero, Hades, Rayman, Resogun etc...I can't wait for this
@Mgene15 yeh I’m shocking at them. To the extent beat em ups become beat me ups but bring it; ya know?
@Westernwolf4 I’m not the greatest gamer either but I have learned that easy almost always means too easy. For example playing FC6 : FAR too easy on easy. Like absurdly so.
I don't have time for super hard games, so will wait for a deep sale.
