With Horizon Forbidden West now less than a month away from its PlayStation 5 and PS4 launch, it's time for the grand marketing machine to properly kick into gear. First up is a brand new story trailer containing loads of brand new scenes, characters, and locations. It all looks stunning, featuring footage taken straight from a PS5.
Then, over on the PlayStation Blog, developer Guerrilla Games has shared a selection of new screenshots that capture some of the biggest moments in the trailer. All four are embedded below. Returning faces from Horizon Zero Dawn include Varl and Erend, while new characters include Zo, Alvo, and Kotallo. The game is out for PS5 and PS4 on 18th February 2022.

I don't want to watch the trailer since it's so close to release. I'd rather be surprised.
However, I wanted to say that I think games like Horizon: Forbidden West is how PlayStation competes against Xbox. If PlayStation successfully pivots its image to be the premier place to play amazing AAA quality games that feel like events, they'll be fine. Xbox will become the three-star restaurant that has an insanely large buffet that's affordable to many people, but PlayStation can offer the alternative of being a special Michelin-starred establishment that's worth the occasional high price for treats. This is all assuming HFW and the other upcoming Sony games hit the mark, which I have very little doubt they won't.
I will not be watching the trailer. If you are buying/renting the game, don't. Go in surprised.
So they added the final boss of mk11 to horizon?
@RBMango @Bdbrady It doesn't really reveal that much.
@RevGaming I don't doubt it doesn't reveal big surprise, but I'd still rather go in mostly blind, especially since it's less than a month away now. Unlike so many publishers (cough Square Enix cough), PlayStation does a great job holding back the big moments in their games' trailers.
It's an excellent trailer with nothing I'd describe as a spoiler - I am so looking forward to this.
Yeah... this looks like another interesting title that'll be fun but I can wait for the PS5 version to drop from $70.
Still haven't decided if I should get the PS4 version or only buy it once I've gotten a PS5.
Anyways, hope the sequel doesn't include a lot of ruins where you have to explore them. Those were sections were my least favourite to play in the first game.
Looks amazing and an strong contender for game of the year already
Anybody else notice how Erend has a focus now? Please don’t kill him off
@RevGaming Thanks! I'm still going dark. I've found games and movies more enjoyable once I'm sold to avoid trailers. Plus I never look as cool as the trailers. They are jumping around and dodging and I'm hiding behind a rock
Decent time for Sony to release this. It combats the recent leaks and provides of a reminder that while others want to play monopoly, Sony are still among the front runners cos of games like this.
Not watching any Horizon stuff now as i want to go in relatively blind (other than recaps of first game). Really hope Sony don't do another HFW state of play
I am so ready for this game. It looks so amazing... going to explore every inch of this map!
I’m waiting for a price drop. I liked the first one, didn’t love it, so I can wait to play this.
@Uncharted2007 And rhats how you increase a game's longevity. That's big-brain stuff.
Will get this when around half price, so much else to play at the moment (on other platforms) there is no rush
@RBMango Totally agree on media blackout and best way to retort.
Also sounds like you were watching David Jaffe. He used almost exactly the same analogy. Perhaps just great minds thinking alike...
I really wish Horizon and Elden Ring were dropping a couple of months apart its going to be hard not to buy both on release. I'm gonna wait for Horizon though and get it on discount since I know I won't be devoting any time to it for the first couple months
@WanderingBullet I believe the PS4 version comes with a free PS5 upgrade.
@themightyant I actually haven't watched Jaffe in a while haha. But that analogy is something I remember hearing from someone I can't pinpoint, and I thought it was dead-on.
@Sushisunbreak Thanks, I've read about it but I rarely ever replay games. Would definitely get the PS4 version if for wasn't for the ray tracing. No biggie, I'll wait for the reviews about the game's performance on the PS4 first.
@RBMango Great minds it is! Me neither but Jaffe was online at a random time yesterday to discuss this and, completely unprepared, had a few interesting takes.
But never have I seen a show that needs a good editor to distil it down to a manageable amount. So much guff in between. lol
Love it, love it, love it!
I simply couldn't imagine Forbidden West being more epic than Zero Dawn or Frozen Wilds, but my god! I love the many callbacks to the original and how much the game has improved as a whole.
So looking forward to this,
@themightyant Agreed. I love his energy (even though I think he repeatedly leaps before he looks), but that man needs better structure or a consistent network of co-hosts to bounce idea off of.
@RBMango 100% agree. I stopped watching him as it was a waste of my time. A shame as there are genuine nuggets of gold in between his stoned ramblings. Perfect example of a creator that needs to spend to make more money and better content. A decent editor and or co-hosts would do wonders. He's at his best when having a dialogue with industry professionals.
Mega!!!
and I've just heard that after the release of this video, SONY shares have spiked to an all time high.
Only joking but it is a great response to the MS /Activision chequebook development, PS games to seem to be on another level to what Xbox are offering at the moment (and seem to be in the long pipeline they have - still nothing from Bethesda deal, not even a Starfield video).
@themightyant He's a passionate guy, but he's like MBG in my eyes where I think he misses far more than he hits. That being said, I think Jaffe's conversation with Colin Moriarty on LSM where he got Moriarty to finally open up about his exile from Kinda Funny is maybe the best episode of any podcast I've ever heard. He's terrific when he has another interesting personality to go back and forth with and push back against some of his more outlandish statements.
Are the people who watch these the same people who will complain in 4 weeks - when a retailer breaks street date - about spoilers?
Sorry, my Twitter feed was all about Arceus this morning.
To join the conversation still undecided on when to buy this. Also how to buy this? I like physical but digital is nice to have. But do I buy the PS4, PS5 or $80 bundle version? Too many decisions.🤷
@Sushisunbreak 100% spot on. Thinking just buy the PS4 version day one and upgrade, but only worry last few upgrades not been so smooth and what if its not available day one upgrade.
The statement from Ryan about it says -
Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West. While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free.
I also want to confirm today that moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly releasing on PS4 & PS5)–both digital and physical*–will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. This will apply to the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7, and any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
— Jim Ryan, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment
*To upgrade an eligible PS4 game on disc to the digital PS5 version, you will need a PS5 console with a disc drive. PS4 game discs can’t be used with the PlayStation®5 Digital Edition.
Day one i know i need this. 😁
@RBMango Absolutely spot on. The Moriarty episode was revealing, though obviously only one side of the story from within Colin's head.
Another good one was the Michael Mumbauer episode. But you're right Jaffe definitely misses more than hits.
Me like Horizon.
Great trailer. That last shot was completely unnecessary though. It would've been a nice surprise to see it in game.
I just hope they don't go 'celestial' with the plot! The first game had such a grounded story, something that was somewhat possible to happen in the real world!
But now that last clip of Moss, she's dressed so weirdly and the lighting and stuff...it just gave me 'Gods' vibes...
Other than this, there aren't many first party games that get the ps4 to ps5 upgrade treatment. Is sony gonna release "director's cut" of all their ps4 first party games?
I've just booked 18th to 21st off work for this... and the 25th for day one of Elden Ring. Any advice on how I tell my non-gaming partner that this is the kind of thing I'm spending my holiday allowance on?!
Sigh,... this looks identical visually to the last one.
Has anyone else noticed significant differences/downgrading in visuals from the gameplay trailer on the beach to now as far as trailers are concerned.
The trailer gave me the vibes of Aloy saving the Playstation franchise (together with her world) from the "announced doom" scenario that was being painted yesterday after the Microsoft/Activision deal.. was it just me?
Aloy starting the year strong for PlayStation! Can’t wait!
In the first game it's revealed that a signal was sent to cause each aspect of the AI program to become independent AIs, which is why Hades broke loose and tried to reboot Earth. But who or what sent that signal?
After this trailer I wonder if that rocket full of rich people didn't actually explode as it left Earth before the apocalypse.
Refusing to watch anymore now until release. Already a bit annoyed I caught a screenshot plastered all over the internet from this trailer that spoiled a specific thing I would would have been hyped to have experienced in the moment, during playing.
Less than a month🙂
@KundaliniRising333 Think your just looking for a reason to nitpick. Besides you can't judge a game's visuals from a compressed YT video.
Looks and sounds STUNNING Hopefully SONY can keep doing this because this is what matters to me, quality games and not loads of rubbish games for free(ish) on a cr*ppy App like games store like MS have
Erm hello!!!
This game looks astonishing from a graphics, gameplay and story point. Who cares if MS own CoD and other generic BS. These are the one of a kind games you would only find from the best artists in the industry
Man that was an exciting trailer, reminds me I still need to pre-order the game!
@Bdbrady i agree but I couldn't resist and I don't regret it because I still have no idea what's going on really.
@Uncharted2007 imo it's worth the $70.
@middyone It will be worth the $70 to many. I sincerely hope you love it. Enjoy.
@Uncharted2007 thanks. hope you can get it soon as well.
