Horizon Forbidden West is quietly on the approach, launching for both PlayStation 5 and PS4 on 18th February. With things being the way they are, though, we've had relatively little information about the game pre-launch, let alone any chance to play the game early. That being said, IGN has just shared a hands-on preview video, featuring some new gameplay footage to pore over.
IGN's Jonathon Dornbush talks through his experience, which saw him play about four hours, and there are some cool details thrown in amid all the lovely new footage. Firstly, the game looks absolutely gorgeous, which is to be expected, but the main impression we're getting is that this is making improvements in all the right places. Just from this video, we can see Guerrilla's efforts to improve traversal, character interactions, settlements, and combat.
Speaking of combat, we learn about an optional arena you can visit in the game, which will pit you against some tough challenges against the clock. If you succeed, you'll be rewarded with some new gear. Fighting the snake-like Slitherfang looks like it'll be a highlight.
It just looks flippin' good, doesn't it? Obviously, we can't wait to play Aloy's second outing, but what do you think of this new video? Are you liking what you're seeing? Tell us in the comments section below.

Game of... whatever the time between now and GoW Ragnarok turns out to be
I hate how Aloy‘s Hair clips through the bow.
Not going to watch the video but I did read the preview and sounds like what I expected...
Horizon is back and just as good if not better than the first!
That'll do donkey, that'll do.
😉
I think the game looks better than any open world game today..
Looks pretty good! I think I've finally decided to get through this one first before Elden Ring mostly because it comes out 1st.
Sooo excited!!! Trying to avoid seeing any new footage seems impossible lol
I really want this but just cant get in to the first one at all. I dunno why but i always end up getting bored of it. Loaded up a save last night, completely forgetting all the buttons and got whooped by a giant mechanical turkey then some invisible things. Turned it off in a huff.
Will catch it on deal after Dying Light 2 that’s for sure.
This and the Beyond! episode that follows up on some more details has me at peak hype - so I think that'll do media-wise for me from now until launch.
Greatness awaits. As such is all Playstation games.
Pre-ordered the special edition . Can't wait .
More clunky machine killin ahead ... I just wish the fighting in the second one is more satisfying than in the first. That's all.
I'll see myself out I guess.
@velio84 Does it look like there's any spoilers in there?
As interesting as the game looks I wish they would just be straight up and honest,. I understand they are trying to market the game because that's why you get the first preview but it's clear from the footage alone that the climbing is exactly the same as HZD except for the fact that you used a focus to see the handhold, you are literally only climbing or pull casting to specific yellow dots that are already predetermined and positioned to very limited pathways... there is no freedom in it just because you can use different hand holds in a 6 ft wide breadth of Cliff doesn't mean it's not just a line up a cliff leading to an area specifically meant to reach or incorporated into what amounts to fighting areas.
Just be straight up when you deliver your information just going to cause a lot of nonsense when the next video and everybody gets to preview it are actually honest.
The game looks great, but it also looks very, very similar to the original, and man that hero lighting does it no justice.
Did anyone else notice the melee special move (I forget what it's called), that he inserted at the very end of the video which was also shown in the beach game play showcase , no longer created a crater in the sand, when performed. During the arena snake fight also showed literally zero sand deformation by the snake, as it was represented with the mammoth enemy in the older beach game play trailer.
I wonder if that was just misrepresentation in that beach game play trailer and what else was just orchestrated for that original game play reveal and/or what else is downgraded.
If anything, based on what I'm seeing this solidified me holding off on a pre order or day one purchase.
Seems like Horizon is getting the Uncharted 2 treatment. This looks incredible
This is AAAA, absolutely stunning. True developer quality and dedication and developmental management to perfection.
This video made me so damn HYPED! Look at those animations! The new machines! The visuals! The climbing and gliding!
I neeeeeed it
@KundaliniRising333 I didn't get that impression! The focus just shows you climbable ledges but they seem to be much more prominent in the sequel. The fact that the yellow lines only appear after using the focus is way better imo! But it seems like you will be able to climb more things
@KundaliniRising333 I noticed the snakes undisturbed ground as well. That was a bit disappointing. Perhaps it's do to the arena where the ground is the same for fights? Overall the game looks great though.
This games looks like it's shaping up to be everything I want it to be. Even if it's only half as good as it looks it's still probably going to be a 10/10 in my book.
@velio84 Dorno did state in the voiceover that he was playing the arena (the snake fight) on performance mode so I can see this being the case (lack of sand deformation due to mode).
Looks to be the uncharted 2 o arkham city level of improvement.
Can't wait.
@KundaliniRising333 I am sorry, but what's the deal of people saying sequels look like the first game? That's the point.
I love when people use their microscope when it comes to sony games and use glasses for every other games and most of the time they end up being better lol.
@gamer_since_83 Hmm the machine combat was what held the original together and elevated it beyond standard games like Assassins Creed for me.
Maybe it took a little while to get into but everything flowed really well once you got into the habit of using tripcasters effectively and the various arrow types.
@LIMA Absolutely shocking! Does that mean your going to cancel your pre-order then?
I think it looks fantastic and I look forward to playing it at some point in the future.
@velio84 Cheers, watched it and it was well worth it 😀
It's looking like there's some great improvements in there especially on the climbing and melee side of things but generally everything has moved on from HZD, which hopefully is a good thing.
Looking great and can't wait to get my copy next month...
On IGN noooooo thankkkk youuuu. Please Sony give us a State of Play focusing on this game!!! Please please…. February 4 please !!!
@KundaliniRising333 watch the ign video, they said climbing is more more akin to assassins creed rather than botw. You can’t climb everything and they didn’t market it that way, but it’s waaayyy more free and flexible than the first one. Simple ledges are climbable rather than specific yellow markings on cliffs. It’s like 50 minutes long but a lot of info
@kyleforrester87 - Totally agree, - nice to play a game where you actually need to use the additional weaponary - Tripcaster, Tear Arrows, Precision Arrows etc and then also be able to swap modifications to best suit your style of Combat - Plus various Outfits to deal with Terrain, Climate and Enemy.
Top Game
@MaccaMUFC
Hell nah. Can‘t wait to play HFW, clipping and pop-in‘s are just tiny things I always notice. And I hate them.
Don't want to ruin the party, but i think it looks decent at most. I just don't feel as if the world they created looks real or believable. The trees for example look a bit simplistic in my eyes.
@Kidfunkadelic83 I can recommend turning the difficulty down if you don't have the time to get into it from the start, then turn it back down when you get the hang of it.
The only drawbacks of playing on easy are a) trophies, and b) you don't really have to learn all the different weapons and tactics, which makes the game a bit shallow. Seems like a worthwhile trade-off to get past the frustration of jumping in and getting your ass handed to you, but I'd highly recommend turning it back up later to avoid b)
@theheadofabroom thats actually not a bad idea. I was going to start it again but ive done too much to do that. Could just stick it down a notch just to power through it for the next game.
I think this looks absolutely amazing!! I have pre ordered the game so I think I might get the pre launch or something like that. The location is beautiful, the NPC's look like they can have some fun with Aloy, the combat looks incredible and the machines as well are amazing!! I can't wait to feel the bow in action with the adaptive triggers and how everything else feels like with haptic feedback. I can't wait for this game and its going to be amazing!!
