Rockstar has just dropped a load of new details regarding the PlayStation 5 version of Grand Theft Auto V — and you can read all about them by clicking this link. But there's still one important question that Rockstar hasn't properly answered: will there be any kind of upgrade path for PS4 players?
There's no mention of pricing or free upgrades in any of the material that Rockstar has sent over, so we're assuming that there probably won't be an upgrade path for GTA5 PS4 owners to follow.
It's also worth noting that GTA Online will be free for PS Plus subscribers on PS5, starting from the 15th March.
Given that GTA5 is now almost a decade old — originally launching in 2013 for the PS3 — you could certainly argue that there should be an upgrade option for existing players. But at the same time, you can totally see Rockstar's business-brain thinking behind what is essentially another re-release of its most successful game. The reality is that people are going to snap this new PS5 version up even if it's selling at full price.
Pre-orders for GTA5 on PS5 go live on the 8th March, so we should know what's going on for sure next week.
Still, we've contacted Rockstar and will update this article if we hear anything.

GTA V has had all of the pennies it's getting out of me. Unless it's a free upgrade, it can come and go!
Either its Free or I wont be going near it.. I despise the Online too so being given that for free is a waste on me..
GTAV is going to return to #1 in the UK charts, isn't it? An epic battle between it and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in April.
They are trying to milk this game for every penny/cent they can get. I will be amazed if the upgrade is free. I’ve already double-dipped (Xbox 360 then PS4), certainly won’t be buying it (yet) again.
They'll probably charge for the game, and the way they'll justify it (without saying outright) is that they're giving away the Online, most popular aspect free on PS Plus.
I bought the PS3 and PS4 versions so unless there's some free or dirt cheap ($5-10 max) upgrade path I won't ever get to experience these enhancements which look great on paper.
There are dirt poor indie studios giving us free upgrades but here's one giant company that can easily afford free upgrades several times over like Take-Two but they probably won't because they just don't want some of the money, they want all of it.
I'd be more surprised if there is an upgrade path than if there isn't. They did the same thing from PS3 to PS4. It's probably gonna top the charts regardless for a few more years, so they'll milk that all they can.
I assume they are leaving the pricing until the last minute so the vocal few won't stop the casual majority buying it again by limiting the amount of time they can shout about the injustice.
Because it is 3 months free my initial reaction is they will charge a monthly fee to play it but I might be wrong.
@uptownsoul I'm sure originally when it was announced, Sony said that it would be free for 3 months but not in PS Plus just that it would be free to PlayStation 5 players free for 3 months.
@uptownsoul ok well that is basically what I said as it doesn't state PS Plus in that part and what Sony originally announced kinda seems pointless for PS Plus players anyway just let everyone add it to their library for free then let the playerbase decide if they want to play it then purchase PS Plus.
If not free i hope they do a Sony and do a £10 upgrade because that's the only way i will pay, i love GTA V but i'm not paying full price yet again.
Its a shame Red Dead 2 isn't getting the love from R* as a PS5 version could be incredible.
@uptownsoul of course, which you can keep it, fine print as long as you have PS Plus to play it. That is where they get you, why I believe it should have been free to have without needing Plus to acquire the game, as some people don't use Plus but then need to spend to just get a game that they could have just given the players the option to purchase for free not force someone to pay to get it that's all I am saying.
Yeah, not paying for this again. Bought it on X360 and bought it again on PS4, determined to play it through this time.
Kept getting put off by immensely unlikable characters (Franklin was OK, but Michael and Trevor were insufferable). I miss Nico; at least he wasn't actively trying to be his worst self.
I have never played it before who knows at the right price.
I'm pretty sure when first announced that they was doing upgrade, it was going to be free if you owned GTA V, funny how greed changes what they stated,
@uptownsoul fair enough bud
Personally there’s no way I’d pay for it again. Unless it’s a free upgrade I’ll be giving it a miss.
The PS4 version has been as low as £7.99 on the store, so a £10 price point (or upgrade) is the most I'll pay to own it for a third time.
It must feel so dated now - it felt dated when I played it on PS3.
Crazy.
I won't be buying it either way so it doesn't matter one way or the other. GTA V has run its course now IMHO.
It should be a free upgrade.
I’ve owned this game three times. One PS3, Physical PS4, and Digital PS4.
There’s no reason someone like me should have to pay for this, again. Especially since the Rockstar Social Network tracks your activity all the way back to Online’s release in September of 2013.
Play-Asia Has it listed for $69.99.

i'm sure they won't let me upgrade from PS3 anyway...well it will get cheaper eventually
Doesn't matter to me. I'm going physical
Just give away the single player portion, they make all their money off the online anyways.
The upgrade will be free for a period of time and then there will be a fee. And if you don't own it already the PS5 version will be available from the start.
No upgrade path no thanks! I refuse to pay full price for this re-release.
It should be. I've purchased on PS3 and PS4...it should be £10 upgrade for previous owners of the title.
It's like the way Bethesda milked the crap out of Skyrim....greed?
I bought it on PS3, PS4 and even on a steam-sale. I would only use it for single player as I hate the toxic kiddy community of GTA. 5-10€ would be the maximum I'd pay.
