As you may already know, God of War (2018) is celebrating its fourth anniversary today (the 20th April at the time of writing). Some fans thought that we might get a meaty update on the sequel, God of War Ragnarok, as part of the celebrations — but it ain't happening.
Simply put, developer Sony Santa Monica Studio says that the game isn't ready to be shown just yet, although the company reiterates that its teams are still very hard at work on the anticipated PlayStation exclusive.
In a short video update, creative director Cory Barlog reassures: "I guarantee you, the moment, the very second that we have something that we're ready to share, we're going to share it with you." Something tells us that Ragnarok's next showing is going to be big.
For what it's worth, God of War Ragnarok is still slated for 2022. Up until this point Sony has been pretty adamant that this year's release window will stick, but it does feel like we're going to need a date in the relatively near future. We wouldn't be at all surprised to see Ragnarok make a splash over the summer with a hype re-reveal.
Are you looking forward to Ragnarok? Let us know what you think of the now four-year-old God of War in our poll, and then grab your axe and shave your head in the comments section below.

Wouldn't be surprised if this slips into 2023 like the next Zelda game.
@lolwhatno In all likelihood he's referring to TLOU remake
@lolwhatno If that's true then it's something they've managed to keep out of any leaks.
Yet they initially claimed this would release in 2021. Never will let that bold faced lie go. Obviously delays happen but there's no way they intended that game to come out in 2021 when it was first announced.
yah and who the hell wants another friggin last of us cash grab. come on. This remake nonsense has to stop.
As far as God of War is concerned, I would be much happier if they just scrapped it as a cross gen game at this point and delayed it to make it a true next gen game rather than just the exact same assets animations, and visuals as a game exclusive to PS4 4 years ago. Especially considering we are now closer to 2 years into the PS5, and have had only a very small handful of PS5 exclusives and even smaller handful demonstrating a generational leap.
At the rate we are going now, we wont have any true next gen games for years from Sony's major studios and who knows how many of them are focused on iterative sequels, cash grab remakes, and live service garbage.
@lolwhatno All good possibilities, or perhaps even one of the live service games they've got in the works. It's always better when things are a surprise though so looking forward to finding out.
@KundaliniRising333 Most people still don’t have or cannot get a ps5. I have one and couldn’t care less if the game is cross gen. It’s going to be great either way. Just like HFW.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s still out this year, but Sony is just waiting for a timed event to hype the title. They want people talking about God of War instead of whatever Xbox and Nintendo have cooking for Q3 and 4. They don’t want people excited about it and then realize people are talking about Starfield a week later. It’s a different world with marketing in 2022 and Sony has positioned itself as the company that hides in the shadows for surprise announcements in their PR. E3 season is coming, even without E3 and Sony will assuredly be fashionably late to the party.
If this has to release this year then not being able to show us anything sounds like BS.
@Amin1998 I finally got hold of a PS5, but I was disappointed that Sony were doing any cross-generation games. The games will still be there when people get hold of PS5s. Sony should be really utilizing the PS5 and dualsense.
@Ralizah
Definitely smells like a delay!
This is getting pushed to 2023. No doubt in my mind.
Less excited when it was confirmed as cross gen, and even less excited having played HFW.
Don't get me wrong, I loved HFW but you could see it was held back by the PS4.
I can't go into detail without spoilers but faster loading, 4k 60fps performance and 3d audio is simply not enough to mask the flaws in the whole cross gen approach.
@Atreus97 It was developed for 3 years for PS4 there not going to throw away all that work. Besides any PS5 improvements would have been minimal at best.
@Wizznl There not going to throw a trailer for the sake of it, Sony will want it to be a big deal and that requires more then just SSM having footage.
Welp, 2023 it is, then.
Ain't no way this game is coming out this year.
@AdamNovice
I never said they had to. I understand wheels were already in motion and all that.
I remember Cory Barlog saying he had some ideas for the game which weren't possible on PS4. Disappointingly the same is likely to apply for this one and I just wanted it to be the best it could be.
#playhasnolimits
God of war ragnarok the masterpiece. will come when its ready.word up son
Patience, Boy
NO!
@Ralizah hot take on that....BotW 2 footage was shown on a high end PC. Will be watered down on current Switch. Was delayed to coincide with the long rumored next Switch or Switch pro. The vertical nature of what was shown has gotta be taxing the piss out of the current model regardless of texture quality etc.
Smells like a delay is inevitable.
I think that despite the game is very advanced in the development, they are waiting to show more gameplay together with a concrete release date.
They may also preparing to announce a multiplayer service spin off on the franchise; a football game where you can use the heads of Mimir or Medusa as balls and each kick to goal triggers a quicktime event. Just saying.
Feels like I'm in highschool again and Force unleashed was announced for x360. That game was the sole reason for buying a x360. After replaying GoW on PS5, GoW2 is the only reason I'm excited that I managed to buy a PS5.
Not liking this keeping close to its chest sony.
There's almost nothing in the near future for this year or the next one (Spider-man 2 will be 100% delayed).
I hope that other site's guys see this comment that I actually complain about Sony lol.
I shaved my head yesterday so I can comment. My beard isn't as long though.
I really appreciate when studios don't share their game too early. It can't do any good to show gameplay footage, or fake gameplay footage like CP2077. This way they can change it freely to make it almost perfect (my expectations aren't low)
@Rural-Bandit
Thought this year was going to be a bang year.
It could turn out a flat year big game wise.
@AdamNovice Who asked for a trailer? I said if they cant show us anything by now while the game would release this year, that sounds like BS. If it releases this year then the game should be close to being done, which means they have plenty to show and could easily do a big SoP. They just dont want to right now and couldve said that, instead of some nonsense.
Can't really be excited for something that we haven't really seen yet. After getting the Platinum in GoW, I have had NO desire to play it again and numerous things that 'irritated' me have persisted in my memory far longer than the 'Positive' memories I had so I am in NO rush to see GoW:Ragnarok.
I also have no desire to spend $70 on ANY game so I doubt I'll play Day1 in any case. Better to wait for sales, ebay or even a subscription service. If its like GoW 2018, I can finish it in a week so would only need to add the 'extra' tier for 1 month - sure beats spending $70 and by then, it should be fully patched too...
What Miyamoto said!
@Atreus97 It's pointless getting worked up for something you don't know is or isn't in the game. As long as the game turns out great it shouldn't matter.
People thought flying mounts would be impossible in HFW because of PS4 and look what happened there.
@ShogunRok Not ready to be shown**
@AdamNovice
Lol didn't you read what I said? I'm LESS excited. I'm the opposite of worked up.
Regarding HFW - you might wanna add a spoiler warning.
All I can add is the execution of that thing isn't very good and would've been so much better if it were PS5 only.
If GoW2 doesn’t release this year it appears Sony sure doesn’t have anything to offer for the rest of the year.
With how prevalent and damaging leaks have been for Sony, I think it’s wise to hold off as long as possible with any of this stuff. It’s coming.
@Rural-Bandit What do you mean? I see complaining about Sony on twitter, neogaff and PXB every day. Hell. Because one was triumphed most of the time, it gets the most complaints.
The only game from Sony that has been 12 hours is Ratchet. Horizon Forbidden West was 37 hours for me to beat, Platinumed at 55 and I'm still not even close to being done with the world. GT7 is 20 hours and it's not the whole thing. Demon Souls is 25h, Returnal 17 or more depending on your skill level. Miles is a smaller scale game so.
Yes. I know what's coming is spectacular, but as of right now, getting a second console will only be because of the exclusives and for me, one isn't there quite yet.
@Rural-Bandit
Guess it can go one way or the other.
No BOTW2, GOW and SF 2022.
And if there are no other surprises, apart from HFW that’s a bad AAA exclusive year.
I suppose GT7 but that’s not my thing.
Enjoying Kirby though.
Been a bit of a weird generation so far, also with a lot of cross generation games, that would have been much better without being cross generation, it’s two years this November and it so feels like next generation as not begun at all.
@Rural-Bandit I know it was a joke (you even said it), but it's still weird you said 12 lol.
PXB is purexbox lol. I just saw you there. LIAR!
Yes. Twitter rots the mind. I don't even have an account. I just think it's funny manchilds fighting.
Sounds like reddit. You ask a question and you get downvoted to oblivion lol.
0 hate tolerance on the modem.
@Nyne11Tyme Nintendo is pretty good about showing off games the way they run on actual hardware. Could be they were demo'ing it on the development model of a new Switch revision, though.
With that said, their best developers can make potato hardware sing, so we'll see what happens.
I'm not convinced this game is coming out this year. I hope I'm wrong but I have a feeling it's not coming out until early 2023.
Well judging by this response it looks Elden Ring will be game of the year with no real competition.
Hey, no need to rush it, "accuracy over speed"
maybe I am a bit concerned with that "upgrade" to Aloy's face in HFW and more willing to wait now. Or maybe I am just broke?
Cory is a cool dude, unlike the guy at Naughty Dog.
No worries man, take all the time you need. I know it's gonna be great when it's done.
@Rural-Bandit I think we aren't allowed to promote other sites but Gamingbolt has no comment and I think they mention everything that it's important. No hot takes or anything. Just news.
@Jayslow i dont know do have any inside info what year they started development?
@Rural-Bandit It's the perfect site for news if you don't want to see people lol.
100% a 2023 game.
@Rural-Bandit Gaming drought.
@Jayslow
I mean I understand the feeling but it’s a bit cheap to call people liars when we are actually ignorant about the details. We know C Judge was injured is one thing.
I'm not bothered when this comes out..longer development time means a better,well rounded performing game potentially..less chance of a crunch so programers stress and mental anguish kept to a minimum..equally not bothered about it being cross gen either as that really is a moot point in all fairness..i cant blame the devs for not wanting to show anything off early as they got savaged the last time they showed god of war early and it appeared to be a bit ropey so i'll just plug away at everything else i have on the go until i can go all ragnarok with everybodys favorite bald,tatooed psychopath..happy days..
@AdamNovice
Good morning. I agree with most of your comments in this article but completely off topic I love your avatar gif if you allow me to say so. 👍🏻😀
@JJ2 it's the internet, so you can say anything you want without any repercussions no matter how baseless it is.
If it doesn't come out this year I'll be really disapointed because it was supposed to come out last year wouldn't be as bothered if they didn't give a release window but they did
@lolwhatno
Hi.
It’s possible many more titles coming but I don’t get what the article is about. I see nothing special about what that dev tweeted. I’m not even sure if he’s only taking about exclusives. Yes PS has ‘some’ bangers coming this year we know that, don’t we?
Gaming press (and ‘influencers’) often makes clickbait and articles about some common and vague tweet 🤷🏼♂️
@KundaliniRising333 eeeerm demons souls, ratchet and clank, returnal are all true next gen games bro 🤷🏻♂️
@RevGaming
Yeah let’s make up some bs complain about GOW R being almost nothing and Spiderman 2 made up delay so some weirdos won’t come at us accusing us with the cliche ‘Sony can do no wrong’ bs because they can’t tolerate people who don’t say Sony are bastrd
Haha
Edit
Relax people in just having a laugh 😅
While 2023 is probably likely at this point, it's worth noting that Santa Monica have a history of keeping their cards close to their chest.
They showed the first God of War (2018) trailer at E3 2016 but then went almost radio silent until E3 2017 with only scraps of information. They didn't show much outside that and only started sharing lots of information a few months before Apr 2018 launch.
So there is a little hope for 2022!
delaying games just means they keep messing up
@naruball unless its discussing moderation...ooops sorry my bad..again..
@Northern_munkey hahaha!
@nomither6 nooope. There are hundreds of reasons why a game is being delayed. No need to make an assumption.
Hope that little s**t atreus has sorted his attitude out.
I hope they take their time to make this game greater, even if that means a delay into 2023.
I would be super happy with a September 2022 release though.
@JJ2 I know. This is some b.
I think they forgot xbox one wasn't worth owning at all and some of us are still waiting for something more than just forza, halo and gears, which that's what it's STILL currently is.
but I'm being honest about Sony. Spider-man 2 will be delayed 100% and all we know is one game coming soon (gowr) atm. They have never been in this situation except before the ps5 reveal which that made sense. They better make an e3 2016 caliber show for the wait.
@RevGaming
Nah there’s always a lot of games incoming including exclusives. Tbh people ignoring games and counting points for the companies because they aren’t from first party studio for me is just console war malarkey haha
I was suspecting you were a bit sarcastic and I found the situation funny 😃
@naruball it’s 100% always because something is wrong/something happened
Not ready to show cause they are no where close to being finished.
@nomither6 "something happened" =/= "they messed up"
If an employee dies/has serious health issues/etc and they miss a deadline, it doesn't mean they messed up. I think even you can understand that.
If someone comes up with an idea that sounds great and they decide to incorporate it (and that of course means they need extra time), it doesn't mean they messed up.
When you talk about others and their work it's so easy to throw around insults and make baseless assumptions. Isn't it?
I'd be amazed if this released this year, but it'll be worth it whenever it turns up. To be honest I'd rather not see anything - just take my money and let me know when it ships. Thanks muchly.
Also, it continues to amaze me how people can be so obsessive about a hobby or entertainment medium yet have so little understanding of how it works behind the scenes. Or maybe they just like getting angry about everything, who knows.
@naruball i just said it’s because something (bad) happens
@Jvoors what attitude?
Refering to his relationship with kratos.... his at times rebeling and at some points in the story he sulks and has an attitude (like a child would) it gives life to him as a character. Flip the coin tho and we have kratos a pretty harsh father who shows very little love to atreus... he keeps his past buried to protect them or because of regret for his past possibly both. Kratos could be said to show love in his protection of his son and atreus at times I think.... shows attitude because his constant striveing for his fathers approval without such a direct response he becomes frustrated he also wants to be equal in their journey to scatter his mothers ashs. I know this is only a small snippet of their relationship in the game and all is merry towards the end but they have a somewhat rocky patch where the gamer kind of realises atreus is really just a kid albeit a badass one.
