We'll be perfectly honest — we weren't expecting a whole lot from the above trailer for Samurai Bringer, an upcoming rogue-lite action RPG for PlayStation 4. However, the game has won us over with old-school charm and what looks to be some neat gameplay.
You play as Susanoo, a deity from Japanese mythology, who has had his power stripped away from him. You'll battle your way through procedurally generated levels in order to regain Susanoo's strength and abilities, with the ultimate goal of defeating the legendary eight-headed dragon, Yamata-no-Orochi. Presented in a 3D, isometric, pixelated style, it brings some big PS1 energy — we've seen it compared to Brave Fencer Musashi, which we can get behind.
The gameplay looks to be fairly modern, though. Defeating enemies and finding loot will earn you Combat Scrolls, which allow you to learn techniques and level up all kinds of attributes, creating a unique build with each run and steadily growing stronger. Meanwhile, beating the mini-boss Generals rewards you with armour pieces that buff your stats and provide unique perks — but these only last for as long as you can stay alive. It's pretty typical rogue-lite fare, but the way it's presented makes it all seem simple and approachable.
The proof will be in the playing, of course, but Samurai Bringer looks fairly promising here. It launches on PS4 on 21st April 2022 — will you be checking it out? Master the blade in the comments section below.

That art and gameplay just makes me think of Alundra on PS1 more than anything else.
Skill/attack editing reminds me of the system in Mighty Gunvolt, which was just so flippin’ unique.
This could be really fun, the visuals have me torn…
Anything Samurai gets my attention. I'll definitely keep my eye out for this, but I would prefer to play this on the go with a new PlayStation handheld just for remote play.
@Apfelschteiner It's coming for Switch too
Actually looks pretty good. Reminds me of Blaze & Blade: Eternal Quest on PS1!
Looks interesting, I wish there isn't rogue element though. It remind me of brave fencer musashi on psone.
@sanderson72 It's just a shame to play any game without trophies. I could play on my daughter's switch, but in reality I'm not going to get round to this game as I have Nioh 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and probably a couple more samurai games to play first.
