As you’ll no doubt be aware, for the biggest multiplayer games, launch day is just the beginning. Overwatch 2 is certainly adopting this mantra with its PS5 and PS4 rollout on 4th October. With the first-person shooter still four months away, Blizzard has already outlined what you can expect from the release’s first two seasons.
It all gets underway with three new heroes – Sojourn, Junker Queen, and a yet to be announced Support Hero – across six maps, including Toronto, New York, Rome, Monte Carlo, Portugal, and Rio. There’ll also be over 30 extra skins, and a brand new Mythic Skin. Then, from 6th December, the second season arrives – with an additional map, Tank Hero, even more cosmetics, and a Battle Pass.
This will continue through 2023 and beyond. “With the new Battle Pass system, you’ll be able to unlock themed cosmetic items and complete weekly challenges for unique rewards,” Blizzard marketing bigwig Madeline Demas wrote on the PS Blog. “Instead of relying on Loot Box luck, you’ll be able to choose how you want to invest and progress toward new content throughout each season.”
In addition to the exciting content flow, Blizzard is also reworking how competitive play will function. So, your performance will be assessed every seven wins, and you’ll be attributed sub tiers to your rank – presumably to help tighten up matchmaking. A beta will get underway from 28th June, and you can find more details through here.
In the meantime, are you in?

BRO finally a Portugal map! I am beyond excited now ❤
My D'va will terrorize kids once more, it seems!
I loved Overwatch. Probably a 10/10 game for me. I felt like I was good at FPS multiplayer again when I was playing it. Lol.
I’m ready for Overwatch 2. Glad it’s free to play. My only caveat with the game is that… it sort of looks like the same game as the last one? Really curious how the game actually innovates what already worked so well.
Overwatch 1.5 more like
@somnambulance it pretty much is the last one, it has all the heroes, modes, skins and maps from the first came, just with a few additions that to me don't justify calling it a sequel.
@UltimateOtaku91 So a free expansion with MT through the roof i hope i can get the singleplayer/campaing content on a disc or for sale.
I was gonna buy OW a couple years ago and never did. Got overw-helmed by the amount of games I had to play. Glad I waited.
@Flaming_Kaiser also pretty sure they already said that new heroes, maps and modes are going to come to overwatch 1 as well, so the only benefit for getting overwatch 2 would be the co op hero missions and battle pass content

Overwatch 2 is going free to play? That's cool. I mean Diablo went free to play and nothing went wrong there!
@UltimateOtaku91 It replaces OW1 entirely so nothing really changes other than going F2P with highly questionable monetization models.
@WinterschneeFee but those with overwatch 1 still get the new maps, modes and characters, and get to play online pvp with those that have overwatch 2.
So I just don't see the point, they could of just made overwatch 1 free to play
@UltimateOtaku91 Yes, that is what I am saying, nothing changes. OW1 players "upgrade" to OW2, whether they like it or not.
It's really just a big marketing stunt because having that big 2 gives a lot of attention.
If anything, it only gets worse because future heroes will be Early Access through the Battle Passes, free for everyone in the next season.
Edit: Hmm, the mention of Early Access to heroes has been removed from the PlayStation Blog that mentioned that. Mistake? I don't know but I hope so.
@UltimateOtaku91 As long as it’s legitimately free, I’m ok with it being sort of the same game with some new content. My fear is characters behind paywalls…
@UltimateOtaku91 It was really strange from the very beginning. Why not just expand/enhance the first game (other ongoing games switched to different engines through the years so why not OW). Their argument was new engine, PVE missions, etc. But now when PVE was postponed indefinitely (maybe they scrapped it entirely), graphics looks almost the same, it is even more strange. Too late to change it I guess.
@somnambulance I am pretty sure the characters and maps will be free or obtainable for some sort of currency which you can get by playing (and heavy grinding). I would say they would go hard for skins and other cosmetics which you won't be able to get so easily and will be limited to specific season. So either you will be forced to play often to get it or spend some cash to get a boost. Something like Apex (most of the newly announced stuff is similar if not directly copied from Apex, they are even calling premium skins Mythic).
@Matej I specifically dislike the Apex system. I couldn’t handle playing it for more than a week or two before I dropped it. I’m just hoping characters are free and cosmetics are in loot boxes or battle pass or whatever is the paid for system. I miss the old way of FPS games with characters being readily available and progression is tangible by leveling. Honestly, I’d rather pay $60 again for Overwatch, which I’ve bought twice (PS4 and Switch), and would do it again for Overwatch 2 if it had a price tag than have the game be limited and free with everything behind a paywall. I mean, we haven’t actually seen what the restrictions will be, but Apex is pretty much my direct fear for Overwatch. Strongly dislike everything about Apex, basically, and don’t want that to bleed over into Overwatch, which I genuinely enjoy and am looking forward to.
Overwatch 2 can either be absolutely fantastic or not, I suppose.
