Bloody hell, this has been needlessly confusing hasn't it? After Xbox seemingly embargoed news on PlayStation remasters of Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden, we received a press release that said both games — and Persona 5 Royal — were coming to PS5. We reported on that, but that information has quickly become outdated, as Atlus has supposedly confirmed which platforms these games are actually aiming for.
Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden are heading to PS4, not PS5. But Persona 5 Royal seems to be a different story. We say 'seems' because at this point Atlus is clearly capable of providing incorrect information. In any case, Persona 5 Royal is listed for PS5 — and the Japanese PlayStation Blog corroborates this.
So this is apparently a PS5 remaster of Persona 5 Royal, one of the PS4's absolute best RPGs. It will release on the 21st October, and it will, according to Atlus' website, include all previously released DLC.
Now then, what could be improved in a Persona 5 Royal remaster? Well, the frame rate could be doubled to 60 frames-per-second for a start. As for resolution, the title already runs in 4K on PS5 via backwards compatibility) and PS4 Pro, so we doubt that'll be changed.
Of course, what we don't know is whether this will be a free upgrade for those who already own Persona 5 Royal on PS4. You would hope that it would be — numerous developers have offered bigger upgrades than this for free — but we're talking about Atlus here; we wouldn't be at all surprised if it launched at full price.

Have been waiting to jump into this until we get a 60 fps PS5 version... wasn't sure if it would happen, but here we are! Excited to see what all of the hype is about. P4G on Vita is one of my favorite games ever.
Not really sure if more frames weren't a remaster... original version is already just fine
hmmm gave p5 a go when it released on ps plus collection and tbh struggled to get into it, didnt give it very long so maybe i need to give this a shot at some stage and see what all the fuss is about
Like I thought what a petty company Xbox is. Just embarrassing.
Atlus will no doubt sell it at full price once again, even if you've bought it all.
If it's a free upgrade it would be nice
But if not I'll pass, while I love Persona 5 (Royal) I won't buy it a third time
This has (unfortunately) been in my backlog for ages... guess it'll stay there a little longer.
PS5 new games catalogue - Already played that one, played that one too, yep played that one, sure I've played this one before, already played that...
@BadPlayerOne Xbox has nothing to do with Atlas releasing confusing information on the remasters. They did the delay but anything coming directly from Altas is the publisher’s fault.
The fact it comes with all the DLC makes me worried this will be a full price launch even for owners of the ps4 version. Which will save me another 120 hour playthrough at least.
Really hope we get it free. 60fps and the full controller works would make it amazing but that isn't enough to spend so much money on. Perhaps they could include PSVR 2 support and put us in the first person view of Joker
I would say Persona is one of my top 3 favorite series of all time. Still its a turn based RPG, 60 frames per second is cool when running but its not making much difference its not a first person shooter. I already got P5R and P5, i won't pay another dime for it
Original was fine as I barely had any frame drops on a Pro. Hopefully it's a free upgrade but knowing Atlus, maybe not. Guess we'll have to see.
@slayernz that was a 1080p 30 FPS game lol P5R is 4K 30 FPS, so I’m trying to figure out if the graphics threw you off
That's cool for those who haven't played yet. I got hte plat in P5R but it's not a game I'll be coming back to, even though it's in my top ten GOAT.
@BadPlayerOne Come on. Sony can be just as bad, stop this warring.
Wondered if this means it will be put back on the PS Plus Collection, or on Extra/Premium?
Yeah, given how 'free upgrades' have been handled so far it probably won't be. They'll likely charge an 'upgrade fee' which won't be worth it for a turn based game that doesn't need a frame boost.
Sony probably have some say in upgrade offers and we all know how greedy they have become. I personally won't bother if there's a fee, nothing wrong with the PS4 entry.
Then again, there might not be an upgrade at all. They might charge full price.
I'll be quite disappointed if there is no upgrade, free or otherwise, because of the following: I played the original Persona 5 when it was on sale for $10 thinking I wouldn't lose much if I didn't like the game. I like JRPGs in theory, but so many don't click with me. I absolutely loved Persona 5. At that time, Persona 5 Royal was out and down to $30, so I decided to buy that for a second playthrough. Commiting another 100 hours to Persona 5 (Royal) suddenly didn't seem as appealing when it was within my ability to do so, so I decided to wait. It has now been over a year and I have not played it. It would be disappointing if my copy were outdated by the time I did. I'd love to play the best version of that game when I do play it, but I'm not buying it again.
@ApostateMage 13 million Wii U & Switch owners feel your pain. 😝
Maybe they'll charge $10 to cover the lip-synching.🤑
I'd be surprised if its a Free upgrade with ALL the DLC given away. You wouldn't expect the Witcher 3 to give a Free upgrade and ALL the DLC away free to those who only bought the 'base' game. Of course if you own the DLC, then you get the upgrades for those free...
I would expect that Atlus would have to release the game as a 'new' game for PS5 (a new SKU) which would also have its own saves and trophies - like a 'Remaster'. Its a bit like a GotY package too which is another way they could release on PS5 but again, I do think it will be a 'priced' game and owners can play P5 via BC...
Given the way royal released I’m guessing a new purchase with a new save to have to start again
@awp69 Push Square reported yesterday that Xbox forced an embargo on Atlus not to release any information on these games coming out on PlayStation for 48hrs.
Ok, ok, I’ll play through Persona 5 for a third time!
@BadPlayerOne I can’t help it but it’s so amusing to me that 3 days on you’re still allowing yourself to be effected by Xbox apparently delaying a date for 48hours…when Xbox has been waiting how many years for these games? I mean… come on man, things will get better. Time is a great healer.
@Legacy2K yeah but if you read that Xbox forced an embargo on Atlus for 48hrs regarding any information of PlayStation releases than I think it’s something PlayStation never did for any multiplattform games.
@Bleachedsmiles it’s nothing about healing I am happy for any Xbox player to be able to play these great games. It’s the way Xbox behaves and I know PlayStation are not innocent, but they never did something like this. It’s just petty.
Won't bother with this, the game won't look any better and i don't care for the DLC costumes.
I'm happy with the PS4 version. If they have an upgrade path of some sort maybe but while I love Atlus I don't see them being friendly enough to do that. 😄
I really hope this is the case. I've had Persona 5 Royal installed, ready to go, for a while now, but haven't yet had chance to play it. I guess I can wait a few more months to play the definitive (definitive) version.
@slayernz Unfortunately, Persona 5 really takes a while to get going. I almost gave up on it, but once I was past 8 hours I was hooked. Ended up sinking in over 100 hours and loved it.
If they don't even offer a digital upgrade path at all, I'll just wait for the PS5 version to drop down to $20 in a few years.
I will never pay full price for a re-release of a more recent game.
Highly unlikely it will be a free upgrade due to all dlc included plus I don't rate p5R the story was only extra 20 hours if that and the bad guy was lame, just a poor copy of the bad guy from p5
I literally started playing this about a week or so ago, having already played the original version before. I’m certainly not stopping my play through cos of the PS5 version.
all the dlc will be bundled? f*ck.... that means it will be paid. i doubt there will even be an upgrade path
atlus...
Can't really say I see a need for this to exist. I'm playing through Persona 5 Royal at the moment and I hadn't even noticed that the frame rate is only 30 fps. But then, it's an anime style turn based RPG - the furthest thing in the world from an action game or an FPS, the genres that really noticably benefit from 60fps
I'm certainly not putting my playthrough on hold on the off chance that the upgrade is free - and if it is free and I finish the game before the PS5 version comes out, I likely won't bother claiming it as I'll have moved on by that point
Okay? I don't really see a need for this. Then again, I don't really see a need for a lot of remasters these days.
Why does Atlus not get crap for rereleasing this game constantly? You're almost better off not buying a Persona game for years because they will release a longer, better version years down the line at full price with no upgrade path.
One of my favorite games is getting a remake of a remaster.
Another one of my favorite games is getting a remaster of a remake.
And I am going to buy both happily because I am an idiot.
@mvhess Atlus has an extremely loyal fanbase (myself included). They've been doing the stuff Sony and Nintendo have done, but way more frequently and mostly get away with it. It's basically expected that a better version of any Atlus game will come out three years after the original. And you will pay full price for it.
Persona 5 Royal Regal Gallant Edition 2.3.456653.21, but with haptics!
These companies going the SFII route. Release a game, then again with incremental improvements, then again with improvements and dlc. Like i said before, ps5/xbsx, the best place to play last gen's games!
@patronmacabre My only experience was with Persona 5. Thankfully I looked at a guide before playing Royal because I didn't realize my repurchase would've been meaningless unless I leveled up my relationships with certain characters by a certain date. A next Gen port is kind of meaningless as the games art style and gameplay really doesn't need 60 fps. I'm assuming it runs at 30 on ps4. Been a while since I played it.
Did they say remaster in the blog? I have a feeling it’s just a rerelease on PS5 with all the dlc and either 4k 30 or 4k 60.
If Atlus and Sony are feeling really generous it will be on the £10 upgrade path
@danzoEX na wasnt the graphics at all, just the gameplay side of things
Going to be a little miffed if they try to charge for a 60 fps patch.
While playing it at 60 FPS would be nice, if I give this game another shot, I'll stick to the PS Plus free version of Persona 5. I tried it and didn't get into it, but I did plan on giving it a second chance someday to see if it clicks like some other games have after a second chance. I was lucky to have played it an hour, so it does deserve another chance, but the free version is good enough since I'm not a diehard fan of the series to warrant paying for Royal.
Well, all that and the fact that it would bug me having the original Persona 5 on my games played list completely unfinished and then play another version of it. I know it's silly, but oh well.
I hope it offers an upgrade path for like $10 to $20 but I’m not holding my breath. I wonder if every region’s will have all the languages. Would be awesome if there are different trophy lists and all games play on English. Persona 5 & P5R are games that I play when I need to decompress. So I’m glad we are getting more of it. Hopefully some new content too down the line!
Well, the Persona 25th anniversary has been a MASSIVE letdown.
They only had to announce Persona 3 and/or Persona 4 remakes but, Atlus being Atlus, we get ports, cafés and f*cking concerts.
