Representing another twist in the tale of this week's Persona saga, it turns out the upcoming releases of Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable will actually only be PS4 versions. A statement issued by SEGA and Atlus said the two titles "will also be heading to Steam and PlayStation 5", but the official website for the re-releases sports just a PS4 icon. Persona 5 Royal is also listed on the page and it does have a PS5 logo, meaning there is a clear difference to take note of.
An added layer of confusion, however, can be sourced from the fact both Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S are listed alongside PS4 and PC. If Atlus is going the extra mile with a native port for Microsoft's current-gen platform, what's happened to the PS5 version? All we know for now — based on this latest graphic at least — is that Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable are only coming to PS4. Re-join us next week when a PS3 version is somehow announced.
Elsewhere on the site, it's confirmed the two titles will only be getting digital releases on the PS Store. "DL version only," it reads, meaning physical buyers are out of luck. Of course, it's not like the two re-releases were going to take advantage of all the bells and whistles of the PS5, but it does at least confirm the DualSense controller won't receive any support, and they won't be utilising the SSD natively.

I'll be honest, I just read it as marketing since they are coming to Gamepass and Microsoft announcing this in the fancy-pants show, rather than native versions being built specifically for next gen, hence PS4 only for P3 and P4 as they will be playable on PS5 via bc anyway. To be fair, the graphic is from Atlus rather than Microsoft, but wouldn't surprise me if that is the case. The graphic itself has confused many people since P4G doesn't say Steam, making people who are unaware think it is not coming; they don't realise that Steam already has P4G.
But then again, I am still holding out for Switch versions.
Given both games age, I doubt a PS4 version would be any inferior to a PS5.
Seems to me that a PS4 version of P3 and P4 makes more sense that a PS5 one. They are old games, not Final Fantasy 16.
However, I find it a bit odd that they chose the portable version of P3 and not the FES on with the extra story.
Persona 5: The Royal
Persona 4: The Golden
Was this always like that? It's kinda bothering me, lol
I bought the PS4-Version of P5R Day One back then but never completed it. Do you think there will be a free or cheap (5-10€) upgrade for the PS5-Version? I won't pay full price again...
I doubt this would make any difference. Apart from trophy tracking perhaps. Even load times I doubt would be much different. Likely both xbox labels are on there because, technically, they don’t have separate SKUs for them and MS treat them as one piece of software so, why not add the label guess.
Hmm hope its actually some effort with the ports as P4 golden on steam was poorly optimised for pc . Hope its not a lazy cash grab
Not a big deal, these shouldn't be pushing the hardware at all.
The only benefit to a native PS5 version is it could take full advantage of the SSD. But again considering the age and comparatively low texture/poly of these games it shouldn't be an issue at all.
@Voltan this is the Japanese version which had “The” instead of just Royal and Golden on the western releases
I'm fine with that. I suspect the PS4 versions of the older titles will have fast load times still. Just happy to see them come to PS4/5.
As I;ve never played Royal, will probably play the PS5 version, unless some kind of PS4 to 5 auto trophy pop is a thing.
That’s just down to how Microsoft label titles, it doesn’t necessarily mean a native port, in fact Microsoft don’t even use that terminology. MS uses “Enhanced for Series X/S” which doesn’t strictly mean a native port. For example Gears 5 does not actually utilise any RDNA 2 features and is very likely not actually a native port, but it is presented as such.
If you look at any random Game on Gamepass like say Fallout: New Vegas it will list “Available on Xbox Series X/S | Available on Xbox One”
I bet In the next 48hrs they will state PS5 as well lol! How petty of xBox!
I'll play these games day 1 on my Series X with Game Pass. If no physical version for P3 & P4 is released, then I'll wait for a deep discount to buy them digital 😒.
Probably part of the xbox deal for not revealing certain information for few days
They release those titles on game pass that doesn’t mean they are next generation releases/remasters.
This is great news since I don't have a PS5. Although, I'd still rather play both on Switch at this point...
I wouldn’t read too much into this site. Maybe try emailing Atlus West for questions?
(1) Also, the main thing I want for P4G is they need to fix the stutter at the beginning of all out attacks. I have a very decent gaming pc and it doesn’t matter— there is just constant stutter in the current Steam version.
(2) If Atlus wants to make a native PS5 version of P5R that’s great, but I will hope they will make a save data transfer and make the upgrade free or at least cheap.
@johnny30
You just know ifs a lazy cash grab like the recent NIS collections.
They are going to be released with game breaking bugs that are introduced with the port (because they couldnt be bothered to hire someone to run through the whole game)
Good news for me then as I'm still not seeing a massive up side to picking up a PS5 right now
@Greifchen if you still have your copy that plays on PS5 why not just play that? It ran great and loaded quickly enough on my base PS4
What I don't understand is if they are just straight-up ports, then why are they taking until next year? I don't know how hard it is to port something, but don't they normally take less time after announcement than this?
They are a psp and ps vita port so does it really matter if its on ps4 or ps5 as its not going to look any better, I'm currently playing trails of cold steel 1 on ps5 and it looks exactly the same as it did on ps4, so I don't see the big deal
@Voltan For the Japanese releases, yes. The definite articles were dropped for the English-localised releases because it sounds weird if English is your first language.
I can't imagine there are any loading time differences since P5 on ps4 loaded practically instantaneous.
I'd imagine they were probably just figuring that the PS4 versions of 3 and 4 will play just fine on a PS4 and a PS5 so there was no reason to put out a native PS5 version for those two.. As for P5 getting a PS5 version, they are already making an Xbox Series version of it so Atlus was probably just like "F it we might as well do a PS5 version too". The question is will Atlus be nice and have an upgrade path of some sort for P5 or pull a TLOU1 and charge full price? Either way I'm just glad 3 and 4 are finally playable on modern platforms.
Weird but glad that P3P and P4G are now confirmed for the PS4. Definitely a day 1 purchase here.
I know that P3P has a number of QOL improvements, but for me, 90% of the magic of Persona 3 was in the somewhat Lynchian cutscenes. As much as I love throwing my money at Atlus, I think I'll have to stick to emulating P3FES for now.
As long as they are on playstation, day 1 buy
Maybe they don’t want to maintain two different versions for PlayStation. Xbox smart delivery games can be simply the same game with minimal differences that make them platform aware. We saw a lot of these statements from devs in the first batch of PS5 support in the early months of the consoles launch.
@Scooby-Doo even if all of these were ready right now, it’s pretty common for publishers to release titles over time. It helps populate their release calendar and prevent one title from cannibalizing the others sales.
Keep in mind the masses don’t actually buy tons of games just because they are out, they are much more likely to just go through the new releases sections and buy something, then move on to the next game once that one is beat. The publisher can maximize sales if the individual titles show up in new releases over a few months.
@Tharsman That makes sense, forgot about that. Thank you for explaining.
I'm really upset there supposedly is no physical release. I hate going digital. Would love to have had them sat next to my copies of P5 and P5R (yes I have both, I know, crazy).
Looks like I have to hope Limited Run get to make a physical release. Or possible physical releases for Switch.
P5/R are physical, and so is the Dancing All Night collection.
Atlus being Atlus again. 😪
This is fine with me, they can always release PS5 patches/upgrades later if need be!
Doubt native Series versions of P3P and P4G more that work on those systems via smart delivery, where on PS5 it just be via BC.
I've always wanted to play P3, but after doing some research I don't think I'll be buying this port, due to it being the portable version. I think I'll just find some way to play FES instead.
Those can be played on ps5, so it doesn't really matter.
It must be the same as the series versions.
@GADG3Tx87 Same here. I have a personal policy of not buying any digital games over $10; as far as I'm concerned, Atlus just turned down the cash I would've paid for discs in favor of getting nothing from me if I ‘acquire’ the Steam or PS4 versions at some point. (Note that my PS4 is currently unmodded, hence the “if…at some point.”)
I think that seems totally fine.
No disc version then ill skip it completely why buy it again with even less ownership. I would have gladly payed the extra cash.
Well, talk about a mish mash of communication! But for Persona 4 Golden & P3 Portable getting ps4 versions only vs XBS/X ports is quite odd for a 3rd party.
Either there'll be a native ps5 port at some undisclosed point after a presumed Xbone timed exclusive deal lapses,or they've paid to ensure they're the only new gen version.🤔
Good old Xbox, glad they're not "dividing communities"...much like how they delayed Psychonauts 2 & made sure the only new gen version was on Xbone after buying out Double Fine! 😅😋
Look forward to more of this mixed messaging when the Activision buyout finalises & any playstation contracts finish up!! But I forgot,"Gamer" Phil Spencer is one of us & can never do wrong!😋
Can't wait to see people complain about no PS5 port for P3P and P4G even though backwards compatibility works just fine.
@streetzman Also people needs to get out of there comfort zone with these digital and physical releases. It's worth it to have P3P and P4G on the big screen.
@belmont You have a good point. I had completely forgotten that "Answer" was exclusive to the FES edition. I was chatting with someone I know IRL and I was saying it was weird from a visual standpoint because portable was entirely 2D art in the hub world.
