The Callisto Protocol was a highlight of last week's excellent State of Play, and judging by the gameplay that was shown, survival horror fans are in for a real treat (that is, if you like your treats in the form of flesh-nightmares).
In an interview with the PlayStation Blog, Glen Schofield, the CEO of Striking Distance Studios (and the original creator of Dead Space), revealed that The Callisto Protocol will have content exclusive to PlayStation when it launches at the end of the year — 2nd December, 2022.
This exclusive DLC is called the Contraband Pack, and according to Schofield, it will give players that pre-order the game something to give you a fighting chance against the unspeakable horrors that await you in Black Iron Prison. The specifics weren't listed, but we would imagine it would contain restorative items or crafting materials or a weapon upgrade, something small to help out in the early game.
Will you be pre-ordering The Callisto Protocol ahead of launch? Mutate into an otherworldly monstrosity in the comments below.

I hate exclusive content no matter if it’s Sony or Microsoft it needs to stop fans of both consoles are paying the same amount so should get the same content
We need more space horror games like this, Dead Space, and Alien Isolation.
Am I the only person that doesn’t like preorder rewards in the form of items, armour, weapons etc? In some games the weapons and armour rewards are so advantageous in the early game that it can sometimes make things a bit too easy.
This is stupid.
Genuinely what is the point of this? I doubt the money got from PlayStation to make like 1 skin or weapon exclusive was enough to substantially help the game. I can see arguments to make a game exclusive, even timed. However, all this does is makes the other experience objectively lesser with (I assume) very mild benefits.
I know it is easy to say: this is bad etc. But the reason they do it is because it works: they’ve been doing dlc pre-orders for years like this because it influences decisions in terms of platform/choice of console.
We may not like it; but until people stop being influenced by this stuff, it will likely carry on.
Cool.Sony should buy striking distance studios. A horror studio like this.the callisto protocol will be a really good game.word up son
@uptownsoul couldn't agree more, Sony seems to get more hate for doing timed exclusive DLC and games but it's ok for xbox to do it constantly, just watch their show next week the amount of timed exclusives that will be shown such as stalker 2 and ark 2 and recently tunic and the gunk, but when there's talk of timed exclusives it's always aimed at sony with final fantasy 7 etc the amount of hypocrites out there is unreal.
And this type of exclusive DLC is only aimed at those who own both consoles, it gives them the incentive to get the playstation version, these types of DLC do not sell consoles and Sony know that
Personally, I hate to see this kind of exclusive pre-order stuff. I intend to buy it on my Series X anyway, so that I can share the game with my son. I imagine there is a strong possibility of the Xbox getting their own exclusive stuff anyway. It'll be different to that offered on the PS5, and so also regarded as exclusive. Regardless, what I'm really hoping for is a really good (but not stupidly expensive!) Collector's Edition; hopefully one with a Biophage figurine of some sort...
I don't care for timed exclusive dlc and this particular kind of dlc (stuff to make the game a bit easier) is just plain stupid and condescending to gamers.
I'm looking forward to the game but always buy these games on sale because of this (PS5 gamer) as I don't want to make them think all gamers appreciate this.
@Sanqet As long as it's not actual gameplay segments locked away on a platform I couldn't care less for certain "exclusive" items or skins.
A few factors go into purchasing a game, multiplayer games I get where my friends are, singleplayer games where it runs best, and then obviously exclusives. But I've never purchased a game because if exclusive content, ie this, CoD zombies, destiny, etc. I don't think I'll start now. Hell, I've rarely bought dlc.
Personally I will never use something that gives me an advantage, especially in a title like this. With other words, these kind of exclusives don't bother me. Just don't lock people out of actual content.
It seems Sony is more interested these days in paying for stupid little exclusive content in multiplatform games then keeping their own exclusive games well exclusive 🤦
@Kooky_Daisuke just so you know Microsoft started the timed exclusive games and DLC
https://www.eurogamer.net/ms-xbox-exclusive-games-dlc-critical
Il just leave this here for those who want to bash playstation to read first
https://www.eurogamer.net/ms-xbox-exclusive-games-dlc-critical
I agree with most people here. Timed exclusive content has always been stupid. Perhaps it makes a difference in huge games, like COD, but in most other cases, it's a waste of money for Sony/MS and it just makes sure those who game on the other platform have a worse experience at launch. Yay?!
@uptownsoul "People say they don't like when Sony and Microsoft (or any platform) does timed exclusive games/content...BUT...they really only complain when Sony does it"
Gotta love omniscient people on the internet who use their power to tell us what everyone else is doing/saying.
@Kooky_Daisuke depends on the dlc for me, if its a proper dlc like story add on, or side quests etc then yeah I agree it's wrong.
But if it's just cosmetics or a starter kit then I don't see the problem, it's not taking anything away from the actual game.
@Sanqet damn you just ended the whole comment section with that statement . 👍
Yeah great, just what I was talking about.
@Ward_ting Tell me about it. Most of the those bonuses are so powerful it sometimes completely ruins the sense of achievement of grinding.
@UltimateOtaku91 @uptownsoul shut up you tarts! I swear people here have such selective memories. Both get flack for timed exclusivity - do you both honestly not remember how much outrage/backlash tomb raiders timed exclusivity for Xbox got? Trust me when I remind you far more was written about the negatives of that than any PlayStation third party timed exclusivity.
The only reason why PlayStation getting flack over the practice is more prominent right this moment is because they do it far more often with more well established games.
As for exclusive content… the original dead space on ps3 was the same.
@Bleachedsmiles xbox are still doing it every year with multiple games, games like the medium, Stalker 2, Ark 2, the gunk, Tunic, The ascent, scorn and crossfire X.
If anything xbox are doing it more, but playstation get called out more for it because of one game, final fantasy 7 remake.
@Sanqet what if sony used their own money to put that added content into that game? Is it wrong then? Or should sony pay for content for xbox owners as well.
@UltimateOtaku91 yeah Sony probably paid to keep that content from Xbox users but the dlc is not going to sell consoles it’s just screwing over other gamers it doesn’t matter who does it Sony or Microsoft it’s anti consumer and I’m saying that as ps5 owner I don’t own series x/s
@UltimateOtaku91 you’ve listed indie games and smaller publishers…
And then to back up your paranoia you’ve chosen to list only one from the many 3rd party deals Sony has had with major publishers as well as neglected all the indie timed exclusivity deals they do.
As well as no mention of the difference in exclusivity windows. As well as neglect the exclusivity in content. And exclusivity rights on known established ip.
There’s not even an argument. In fact it actually blows my mind just how often fanboys have this kind of victimhood thing going when anything possibly conceived as negative attaches to their preferred console…especially when their complaints are not only unfounded but pretty damn ridiculous - instead of going off dedicated sites have a look at the contrasting reactions timed exclusivity has gotten, particularly from established ip/devs/publishing houses, on supposedly unbiased sites that report on all platforms. Actual media outlets outside dedicated sites. Their views will always go where the money is.
To cry ‘nobody ever goes after Xbox for timed exclusivity deals’ is simply head scratching and shows such a broken mind at work I can’t even imagine the torment you must go through.
Again, look at the reaction tomb raider got them…look how Xbox changed after that. Look how rarely they even do promotion deals now for 3rd party compared to the 360 days.
Yes, Xbox still do third party deals (more in effort to get games day 1 on gamepass). But hell even when they make their first party games exclusive they get more flack than Sony does with their timed exclusivity third party deals - you telling me Xbox didn’t get more backlash for starfield being exclusive than Sony did for getting timed exclusivity for death proof, ghost Tokyo. Or even making an established ip like Spider-Man exclusive?
Trust me, if next week Indiana jones is revealed to be exclusive to Xbox you’ll have ign, eurogamer etc doing countless piece’s on ‘how is this allowed?’ ‘Is this fair?’ ‘Should it come to PlayStation?’ ‘We’ve asked them if it’s coming to PlayStation folks’ …
Yet a new final fantasy gets? Wolverine gets?
@uptownsoul Dude the fact that I had to name tomb raider proves my point. Jesus man.
Whatever. I’ve been excited for this game since it was announced so I’m 99% likely to pre-order it regardless of any extras or not. Extra DLC / cosmetic garbage is just gravy at this point. But with regards to platform exclusive content, I’ve never been in favor of that. The purpose of exclusivity IMHO has been to move console units. IE, a game is only going to be available on a particular platform, so if you want it, you’re going to need to own that platform. I’m perfectly fine with that type of competition / exclusivity. But mere DLC and add-on’s? No way - it adds nothing to the purpose of exclusivity IMHO and just alienates fans of the IP on any competing platforms.
@uptownsoul I think there’s either a communication problem or you may be a bit slow…
To clear things up. I’m not saying Xbox don’t do timed exclusives. I’ve actually said the opposite.
You’re saying people only complain when Sony does them - this is not based on reality. This is your paranoid brain telling you ‘they’ are out to get Sony/you. It’s not real.
The reason for the possible perception of this, why you’ve tricked yourself into believing only Sony get called out on timed exclusivity, was explained in my previous posts.
The mention of Tomb raider not only demonstrated clearly that you’re wrong in your way of thinking but also brings to light that that’s the last established ip Xbox has attempted to make timed exclusive. And like you said, it was so long ago.
Where as Sony continue to make known established ip as exclusive - this offers more a perception of Sony being called out because more posts on messaging boards probably jump on it - where as mainstream media outlets are nowhere near as vocal…especially compared to how they were when Xbox had timed exclusivity with a known ip - tomb raider.
@uptownsoul You’re comparing the fanbase of these platforms not the reaction the mainstream media has towards timed exclusivity between these platforms then?
It sounds like you’re specifically referring to how people on this site view timed exclusives compared to the sister site?… so basically you’ve taken a very small pool of people and ran away with an opinion that’s not reflected by mainstream media. I get you.
You also seem to have confused timed exclusivity with timed/exclusive content. Tbh with I can’t think of a single game, recent or otherwise, on Xbox with timed exclusive content. A few on PlayStation come to mind though…
Either way, you’re wrong. People call out Xbox timed exclusivity…you’re calling them out about it…on just one of the countless sites dedicated to PlayStation. What does that possibly tell you?
And people are right to call out exclusive content on a game that’s presumably going to be sold at the same price on each platform. You can see how that has maybe less to do about Sony and more about the practice right? I mean you wouldn’t like it if a game you’re into had more content on the xbox version right yet you’re being charged the same? It’s a different argument from a full game being timed exclusive…you can see that right?
Tellingly though you’re first reaction was ‘defend sony…attack Xbox’ … and you revealed so much that I know all this falls on deaf ears.
It’s cool… you do you.
@Kooky_Daisuke. Yes it does matter who started it.microsoft aint no saint.wtf 🤔.sony is just finishing what microsoft started.word up son
@uptownsoul Are you actually trolling me? You’re comparing a gamepass perk of some digital daggers on a game that’s FREE…to exclusive content on a game that’s charging the same price across multiple platforms?
Ok, fine…I concede…that’s a huge win for Xbox. And is totally comparable to PlayStation having a complete character and story arch exclusive in avengers…a complete game mode timed exclusive in cod… a complete extra game In dead space 2… damn those Fortnite daggers! You sure showed me!
And PlayStation gamers had the nerve to complain about this timed exclusive Xbox content??? Wow
Just don’t Google Fortnite exclusive PlayStation content.
@UltimateOtaku91 I'm sure Xbox gamer would gladly trade medium, Stalker 2, Ark 2, the gunk, Tunic, The ascent, scorn and crossfire X for FF7.
People get upset cause Sony have a tendency to go for big title when it comes to exclusive, and they like long exclusive periods with no guarantee of the game ever showing up on other platforms.
When Microsoft has a timed exclusive you can guarantee it'll come to other platforms in 2-3 months. Also a lot of those games are part of the ID@xbox program, so some exclusive time is required due to the developers applying and receiving some help from Microsoft. They didn't go out and buy the exclusivity.
@Kooky_Daisuke. If you dont buy it sony wont care.they have a lot of people that will buy it🤔.haha.sony PlayStation is the g.o.a.t. 🐐. 👑.word up son
This one is looking good
@uptownsoul Nah dude, you’re reaching to back up an unfounded comment. And now double downing on it by claiming I’m also perpetuating this supposed ‘double standard’…something that exists in your head because you’ve limited yourself so much in the information you take in.
But yeah bad PlayStation! Bad! Bad! Bad! 🙃
@Kooky_Daisuke do you also wish Microsoft didn't buy Bethesda then scrap the work they'd done on developing a ps version of starfield & made it exclusive to the xbox ?
@WadeIsInsane the average Xbox gamer isn't enthused with the generic low budget niche JRPG that japanese developers fill the market with every year. They want the big budget fancy stuff: mainline Final Fantasy, Kingdom heart, Persona... etc. A lot of JRPG during that Xbox 360 era wasn't that.
Lost Odyssey for example had no name behind it. It required you to already be interested in JRPG in general, and wasn't particularly novice friendly. Even then I doubt many JRPG fans on 360 bothered to touch it as most people tend to stick to the IPs they know, and not new IPs.
An eye-for-eye was Sony buying Bungie.
Is this game just ps5 or will there be a PS4 version ?
@WadeIsInsane No name behind meaning it not apart of a long ruining franchise or known IP. Not that it was created by no name people. And no, if you ask any JRPG fan on Xbox they aren't gonna recommend it cause I've spoken to plenty of JRPG fan on Xbox that never played it. I've personally have never played it and the 360 was my platform of choice but I've played mistwalker other games blue dragon (mainly due to the anime), Terra Battle, and Fantasian.
I guess if you ask anybody on the internet then sure.
Who cares about the IP if you don't have the developers that developed them. Halo has been a complete mess since Bungie left. Spyro and Crash have been not the same since naughty dog or Insomniac. That why it hurts far more losing Bungie to Sony vs losing spyro or Crash to Microsoft.
While Bungie has said that they're stay multiplatform that doesn't guarantee Xbox. Multiplatform can easily just mean PS and PC. Just like we can't guarantee the same with Xbox's current deals after 2024.
@add286 spot on. I own both PS5 and Series X as do many others. I’d def buy for the machine that has extra content.
@jFug At least due to there being so few, most of them are still top quality.
There's always a downside to a gaming genre becoming more mainstream.
@Would_you_kindly There's also a PS4 version, links down below.

@uptownsoul hahaha. Nice try. You never said "some people".
Too bad for you that "Verba volant, scripta manent"
Could care less about the exclusive content, but will be getting this day one. I loved the original dead space, even beat new game plus. Hated 2 and never played 3. EA murdered the franchise, honestly this game is basically Dead Space 2.0 and I couldn't be more excited.
@uptownsoul yeah what about all of the console exclusive games for like the switch, xbox etc? I wish people would just stop complaining about stuff like this.. Either BUY all the consoles and be quiet or get a new hobby
@Kooky_Daisuke it's just resources, you're not missing out on anything. 🤦♂️
@uptownsoul glad someone else has noticed.
@Bleachedsmiles lol imagine thinking the western media will call out MS for exclusive Indiana when they've been giving MS passes for anything they do.
I dare you to find one instance in the last 5 years where western media (even Pushsquare) praises PlayStation but critiques Xbox.
@Sanqet but what about when SOUL CALIBER V came out and they had exclusive characters for each content? I dont remember any gamers saying "OH LET ME BUY (insert console here) so I can fight as Darth Vader..!!!"
@Kooky_Daisuke Spider-man was not "cut-out", he was never in Avengers until Sony paid Square/CD to put him in. 🤦♂️
@uptownsoul @viciousarcanum You guys should start a support group… get you through these dark times
@Kooky_Daisuke I don't want to play starfield I'm just saying that game was already in development for PlayStation before Microsoft acquired them then as soon as they bought them they cancelled the playstation version & made it exclusive to Xbox , I'm sure people would be Irate if insomniac was a 3rd party developer developing Spider-Man for xbox & playstation & then Sony bought them & the Xbox version got scrapped
@UltimateOtaku91 not hate more like why. If you want your game to sell well whatever the platform you shouldnt be doing exclusive stuff for one platform and trying to sell for the same price on another console.
It makes zero sense to mess up your probable sales on other platforms for fluff, restoration items.
Locking away content for example Hogwarts Legacy quest should never be allowed. Sony want game parity?? Cool, then dont lock content behind your console.
