A trend that's been bubbling away in recent years is the boomer shooter — brand new first-person shooters that are stylised to look and play like 90s classics. These pseudo-retro titles aim to capture the frantic pace and OTT gore of DOOM, Unreal Tournament, or Wolfenstein 3D, and the results can be hit and miss. However, judging by this trailer, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun looks like it could be a winner.
Just announced for PS5 and PS4, Boltgun combines Warhammer Space Marines with this 90s-style FPS gameplay, and it looks like a perfect match. "Play a battle-hardened Space Marine on a perilous mission across the galaxy, as they battle against the Chaos Space Marines and daemons of Chaos," the press release says. "In glorious boomer shooter style, unleash your devastating Space Marine arsenal as you blast through an explosion of sprites, pixels and blood. Run, jump and charge across huge levels to shoot, shred and slice the worst heretics across the galaxy".
There's no word on whether Boltgun will feature any multiplayer or if it's a singleplayer experience. Either way, it looks like it nails that old-school vibe. We're certainly intrigued to learn more about it, though there's plenty of time for that. It's heading to PS5 and PS4 sometime in 2023.

Loving the aesthetic - hopefully it plays good too
We need more of these fun,over the top fps shooters..well i do anyway..
i’m from the aim-down-sights generation so i don’t know what to expect 😂
never played doom either
This looks pretty good.
Anyone interested in Doomish retro fps should check out Prodeus.
All over this on release. Let's stomp some umies!
Hard to tell from this video. At one point the enemies almost looked 2d. Interesting enough to keep a look out for though.
Isn’t there another warhammer FPS in production and due for release soon. Not sure how I feel about 90s pixel in 2022.
I was burnt with Necromunda Hired Gun, absolutely terrible game, probably the worst PS5 game I have played. That looked good as does this but I will be awaiting reviews before I drop any cash on it.
@Elodin yup it looked like the classic Doom-style sprite animation, with some deliberately-left-there outline aliasing
@nomither6
If you play games like this with the mindset of a modern fps you're gonna have a bad time. They play VERY differently. I'd recommend you play Doom and Quake first to get the feel. Both can be found on PS4 and 5 for very cheap. If you like those games then Ion Fury, Project Warlock, Turok 1 and 2, Exhumed Powerslave, Serious Sam Collection, Doom Eternal, and Shadow Warrior are all really good 90s/throwback FPS games that all can usually be found for less than 30 dollars on PS4 or 5.
Shut up and take my money!
Yeh, not for me
@Gloamin Hi mate, I did play at launch and finished it, the settings were decent but upgrades were really confusing and the gun play felt really weak compared to a Doom or Wolfenstein. The voice acting/script wasn't great either but maybe that is in line with Warhammer stuff, I don't know much about the lore. There are definitely worse games out there but I think it was more disappointment than anything with me as the trailers were awesome and I really wanted a new Doom fix! Good to hear it got some patches, I always appreciate when dev's work to make amends!
