EA has a AAA, single player, open world Black Panther game in development, according to a new claim from the Giant Bomb journalist Jeff Grubb. Speaking during his daily news show, it's supposedly called Project Rainier and is currently in early development. Production is being led by Kevin Stephens under a new studio at EA, who was vice president at Monolith Productions when the team made Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and sequel Shadow of War in the PS4 era.
Grubb explains the overall goal of the game is to become the new Black Panther, with the open world allowing you to approach things in your own way. Of course, the fact this is a AAA project and — better still — is single player will be music to the ears of Marvel fans. Since the game is so early in development, it's unlikely we'll see any footage or receive confirmation of the title for a few years. "The game starts with Black Panther being dead and the player is going to take on the challenges of becoming the new Black Panther", Grubb explains.
The news, of course, follows just after Marvel released the first trailer for this year's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever movie flick. The trailer revealed a tribute to Chadwick Boseman after his tragic passing in 2020.
A potential Black Panther game adds to the list of upcoming superhero-related titles, which includes Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Marvel's Wolverine, Marvel's Midnight Suns, Gotham Knights, Suicide Squad, Kill the Justice League, and Wonder Woman. sorry but ive got Marvel overload ive had enough now
well if jeff grubb said it, it must be true
Dang, I really thought EA's Marvel game was going to be a Marvel branded Sims.
Would've rather heard nothing until the devs were ready to share more about this.
Another unhelpful leak
EA? Y'know I reeeeeeeeally shouldn't have held that Monkey's Paw when I said I wanted a Black Panther game
Bittersweet. On one hand seeing EA make more and more single player games again is music to my ears. They can make exceptionally great games, and they used to, it's just that, for years, they stopped. The talent is absolutely there.
On the other hand.....another licensed Marvel game?
Other than harry potter and [insert 10 year old game re-re-re-re-remastered-remade: Reborn: Director's Cut: Collector's Edition] are there any video games left that are not Disney licenses?!
I would like to formally announce that I'm also making a Marvel game! I think my cousin is making one too I'll keep you guys posted 🙂
AAA, single player, opened word was all I needed to hear to be interested.
You lost me at Jeff Grubb
I mean it sounds pretty decent to be fair. I'm certainly interested in learning more.
I'm interested but there's a big list of different super heros I'd rather have instead. Just hope it doesn't feel and look too much like Batman
Just make it fun
This sounds alright. I would prefer a Blade game in the style of the Arkham games though.
True or not its a pass from me
Great, just what we need. The gaming industry to become the movie industry... Again.
Shadow of War style Black Panther doesn't sound too bad. Taking it with a big grain of salt but overall it makes sense.
Anyone can argue that Insomniac wouldn’t be a good fit for a specific superhero game, and that’s fine there’s countless of other devs like Rocksteady and Eidos who have proven themselves good to handle the formula, and it’s good if one developer doesn’t have a monopoly on Superhero or Marvel games.
But for gods sake why EA
@trev666
I only watch the Spider-Man movies. I saw a report that they have 30 movies in the pipeline between 2020 and 24
@Netret0120
They’re oversaturating the market.
Eventually it will die a painful death.
@TeapotBuddha @Deoxyr1bose @MidnightDragonDX @Keyblade-Dan I'm def very hesitant whenever EA's name is mentioned, but they did leave out all of their scummy practices in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order...hopefully it's the same case for Black Panther.
@gollumb82
Yeah I hear ya. A few superhero games here and there are fine but I do not want the game industry to go down the path of Hollywood. It feels like I sneeze and poof a new superhero movie is announced! Do not want that with games as well.
Overrated film. I expect the game will be the same.
@KidBoruto @KidBoruto. Yeah star wars jedi fallen is a really good game.a black panther game sounds good.and the guy that was vice president at monolith who help with the excellent and one of the best games ever.in middle earth shadow of mordor.and shadow of war.ok im down with it.word up son
Single Player - YAY!
Open world - BOO!
@TeapotBuddha That was 10 years ago under former CEO John Riccitiello, the same guy who had the "unprecidented partnership" with Nintendo for WiiU. The guy's an even bigger blowhard than Kotick and Matrick.
In fact, just last week he was in the headlines again with this brilliant quote. In the quote he said of devs that don't prioritize monetization and microtransactions early in development, quote:
"these people are my favorite people in the world to fight with – they’re the most beautiful and pure, brilliant people. They’re also some of the biggest f****** idiots"
He's currently the CEO of Unity. And the Unity staff aren't very pleased with him. Fortunatley he has nothing to do with EA, and while Andrew Wilson originally seemed like a bit of a slime ball, too, things are changing a lot there. They have a new head of studios, and ever since she took over they've really being refocusing a lot of their projects into these bigger single player games and dusting off a lot of dormant IP. She's really turning EA around, or so it would seem.
Unfortunately, it also seems they're up for sale, and while they dodged the Comcast bullet that would have made EA even worse than the darkest of Riccitiello's days, we don't really know where they'll end up and if all the positive changes will go to waste.
@Korgon
Got that right. I like me some Spider-man and Batman but this superhero stuff has got out of hand recently. Having said that, I'd be interested in a sequel to Ghost Rider or Punisher that launched on PS2/PSP (if I remember well). I doubt that Panther or Ant-man have a big enough fanbase to warrant a game.
@NEStalgia Quite a lot actually just look around. The less known games can be quite great.
I would love if this ties into the MCU. I'd rather play some games than add more Disney+ series to my "to-do-list".
If i cant play as T’challa keep it.
and folks wondered where was catman whilst we were served batwoman.
No thanks I don't agree with the underlying message.
Who the hell will make it though? Respawn is busy with star wars and apex content, so who else is talented enough? I don't think there aren't any. Bioware has always been a skippable dev.
I know its just me as the films were so popular, but I just didnt get the whole Black Panther thing at all, it leaves me colder than cold.
I do like representation of course, I just wish there were more of it in better franchises is all.
.... And I would wish for a better dev than EA. People can represent a change at EA all they want, but the devils underlying nature never changes, and no one is lower than EA, Ive seen it first hand, experienced the pa8n and stifled creativity (shudder).
Maybe this will end up being a blinding title and Ill eat my words!
Insomniac should make all of the marvel games.
@Sqush-Pare Care to elaborate?
Ah man I'm sick of Marvel.
"Jeff Grubb says"
Looks like we can expect a linear White Leopard indie game by Annapurna.
Also probably live service with lots of microtransactions
@MidnightDragonDX Did you play Jedi Fallen Order? I'm unsure if you like Star Wars at all.
@playstation1995 I still need to play the two Middle-Earth PS4 games, but have heard nothing but good things about both!
@KidBoruto. 2 of the best games ever made.i got middle earth shadow of mordor game of the year edition.and yes its that good that is why its call game of the year edition.it have more than 50 game of the year edition.and the nemesis system is amazing.the gameplay is legendary.graphics looks amazing on my ps4 pro.story is really good.and talion is one of the best protagonist ever.word up son
interested in a Black Panther game? yes. from an EA studio? nah, im good.
Could be cool, it is way to earlier to say anything really. But I must say that after Thor: Love and Thunder and the Ms Marvel series my interest in Marvel is in its lowest point ever since the beginning of the MCU. Maybe we are now heading to a time where anything Marvel related will be either a hit or a miss and get over with it.
Arkham knight got too repetitive for me towards the end , hopefully they dont follow their example
So we aren't T'Challa and instead some new character? Why? I want to play as T'Challa not a new character.
Its good to see EA go back to single player games. Honestly other then Battlefield/Fifa they have been better these past few years since Battlefront 2 (what to give credit they turned around hard). I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt with this.
One of the more tame characters tbh. I’ll proly check it out at an extreme discount
I’ve never gone from 100-0 as fast as seeing Black Panther game then EA in the same sentence. Optimism very very low, a damn shame.
I'm a big Black Panther fan and was before the movie came to be so I very much hope that they make this a good game. We know EA can do it, it's just if they want to. I want that super speed, that crazy agility and super jumps and the fighting could be epic.... Please EA, don't screw this 🙏
Hopefully be in a similar style to guardians of the galaxy.
EA have a decent track with SP games. Enjoyed Fallen Order and looking forward to the sequel.
Surprise Surprise open world!!
@Andywax No.
@Sqush-Pare Wow. Thanks for being so transparent and forthcoming with your opinion. May as well have not bothered in the first place eh?
@playstation1995 Nice to know! Maybe I'll play them after I beat AC Revelations, AC3 + Liberation, and AC4 Black Flag + Freedom Cry.
