Update: Following the leak earlier today, it has now been confirmed that the release date for Sonic Frontiers is indeed 8th November 2022. The news comes alongside a story trailer, which comprises a mix of gameplay and cinematics.
It's looking better in this latest video, but the proof will be in the playing. We're excited to check this one out for ourselves, but until then, what do you think? How's Sonic Frontiers looking in this new trailer? Let us know down below.
Original Story: A Japanese trailer for Sonic Frontiers has inadvertently revealed the game's release date a little early.
According to the video — which is now inaccessible — SEGA's open zone platformer comes to both PS5 and PS4 on 8th November 2022:

Sonic Frontiers is due to make an appearance during Gamescom Opening Night Live in a matter of hours, so it now seems certain we'll get proper confirmation of its release date during the presentation.
Assuming the date is for a worldwide launch, it means the hedgehog is going up against Kratos, as God of War Ragnarok launches the day after, on 9th November. Obviously they're aiming for slightly different audiences, so we're sure both games will do perfectly well regardless.
Anyway, we'll update you all on any news from Sonic Frontiers, and indeed Gamescom, as it happens, so keep your eyes peeled. Are you excited to play Sonic's latest adventure this November? Put your running shoes on in the comments section below.

This won't end well.
That has to be the worst possibly day to release a game. Either that or Sega are supremely confident with their product…. 🙄
That's a clever move, to be honest. You can always blame the GOWR in case of poor sales.
Not to mention only 10 days before Pokemon
@Bionic-Spencer Not quite, worst timing would've been very close to BotW 2.
If the Sonic game is top AAA then it will shine through and sell, even if it takes a bit longer.
If it’s average to poor then it won’t sell.
@Tomato_Goose thats makes too much sense to not be true.
Initial sales would take a hit but alot of kids would want a Sonic game for Xmas
Let's hide a game that may review poorly right before GoW. That way those reviews get bumped off the front page right away.
I'll get it black Friday
If nothing else I guess I... applaud the bravery?
I wouldn't bet against Sonic at least being financially successful. Say what you will about the quality of Sonic games but they sell well and like the article said the audiences are pretty different with the Sonic fanbase being among the most loyal fanbases out there. Plus Sonic is on every system available whereas God of War is only on Playstation so it also has that going for it.
Remember when people thought the Sonic movie was going to flop? Look how that turned out.
Not everyone owns a PS4/5 or wants the new God of War. There's also probably not a gigantic amount of overlap in their audiences. It'll be fine.
From what I've seen so far of the game it will flop against god of war
Probably the Xbox guys will jump on it because they don’t have any other games so far in 2022… but wait: It won’t be on lame pass??
How should they play this??
Oh dear, this might actually be a multi platform title that sells better on Xbox.
I’ll be grabbing both, so it’ll be a good week for me!
That's just stupid, I think it's better to launch it 1 weeks before gow or 2-3 weeks after it.
I was willing to give the game a chance if it could impress me with a better gameplay video. There was also a part of me was thinking to hold off a bit. That release date makes my decision a lot easier, I'll be holding off until it's cheaper for sure.
It’ll still do quite fine, Sonic sells and it’s not a PlayStation exclusive. It might take a hit on PlayStation, but I doubt it’ll hurt it that much.
@Ralizah. Yes everyone does.and if you are in pushsquare they already have either a ps4 or ps5.🤔.word up son
Sonic Unleashed came out in november (and is the absolute best 3D boost sonic game ever , and top 2 sonic games of all time by the way) so i have hope
@Reeneman
I can't take anybody seriously who says something like 'lame pass' we need to move past insulting people for preferences and this console elitism BS.
@PegasusActual93 why wouldn’t it? God of War is only available in one console and the target audiences are so different…
@Casco
Because lets be honest the reveal of Sonic Frontiers gameplay looked terrible and for the average typical gamer, not us, just the average gamer; all they will see is the hype and marketing and publicity around God of War and as a result not even realize a new Sonic game has been released. Releasing it literally any other quarter of the year would be better.
@PegasusActual93 the game does look underwhelming, true. But don’t underestimate the power of the Sonic brand, with the movies and everything. It is very strong now. And Xbox and Nintendo users don’t have much coming between now and end of the year
@Casco Have to disagree there, Switch has the most packed Fall/Holiday season of all 3. Xbox does have large droughts yet again though.
I think the people buying this and GoW are fairly different demographics so I don't see a problem with the release date.
@Grumblevolcano Had forgotten Splatoon 3 and Bayonetta 3, neither are my cup of tea but those are big releases sure enough. Still Bayonetta 3 is an entirely different demo as well, and Splatoon comes out in September.
Well…good luck with that!
@Ralizah You can literally apply that same example to a new Pokemon game. It will still sell gangbusters, regardless if there's some (like me) who don't play Pokemon. God of War is a solidified AAA title that will most certainly sell over 10 mil. Nod different than BotW 2, Pokemon, etc. Not saying you personally said anything to the contrary.
@Reeneman Lamepass....really?! Come on man.
@Ralizah Yeah the two are targeting different audiences I don't think this matters much.
@Casco There's also Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope in October, Harvestella and Pokemon Scarlet/Violet in November, some DLC/updates for games like Switch Sports/MK8 Deluxe/XC3, a load of multiplatform games and Nintendo have announced unannounced games for the holiday season in September previously so there could be even more.
@JudgeDredd Hopefully something with more jam comes out that piques your interest.
@Ralizah It's not just about sales though, it's clearly going to be overshadowed in terms of exposure with GoW releasing a day later. Maybe they're hoping to blame poor sales on GoW should it not reach expected targets?
I'm looking forward to sonic soo much more than GoW so I'll be buying sonic. I also know I'm in the tiny minority on this 😅
@Jayslow interesting and a good point
@Rafie it’s clever because it rhymes with Game Pass. Kind of like when people refer to my football team as the Cleveland Clowns. Ok, maybe not that clever.
Edit: American Football team.
I don’t see this affecting either much game much. Pretty sure Sonic was gonna sell best on PC and Switch regardless.
So that one will be bought later.
This is the first time I actually liked what I’ve seen of this game. I dug the trailer. It looked promising to me.
It's £60? Yeah let me be a tool and pay day one prices, good idea 😤 lol
@Martijn87 deep sale, next year summer lol maybe when your backlog is a bit smaller 🤣🤣
@liljazzy2 I'm from Cleveland as well. I'm well aware of what it means to be a Browns fan. 😂
@playstation1995 I don't think everyone does. I'm not particularly excited for GoW Ragnorok and will definitely be getting Sonic Frontoer though day one.
"The release of Super Mario Odyssey 2 and Call of Duty 20 being in the same week is bad news for Mario."
@huyi a really deep deep sale. Considering all the big games coming in 2023 and I can't say the latest trailer got me excited. This game is low on the list.
@James_42 yeah add me to the list of those who don't care for GoW.
This will be getting a pre order because the wee man wants it (he's spending his money on it to be fair so that's up to him) but I'll no doubt take it for a spin...
He's another who couldn't give AF about GoW 😂
@James_42. Nah this sonic doesn't look that good.levels looks boring.god of war ragnarok is gonna be amazing.god of war ragnarok and elden ring will fight for game of the year.word up son
@Rafie. Pittsburgh Steelers here from. Queens new york for ever.word up son
Wait... is Sonic getting the Elden Ring... vibe ?
It sure looks this way in certain parts of the video...
Sonic Frontiers is the new patch for Sonic '06.
Unfortunately God of War: Ragnarok has taken up 100% of my November gaming budget, so will have to wait for a Black Friday discount on Sonic next year in 2023.
Hope everyone who gets Sonic "month one" enjoys the game though!
@Rafie Did we just become best friends? I currently live in the Pittsburgh area so I live a life of perpetual ridicule.
@liljazzy2 Possibly 😁 Also, I live in Allentown. Which is on the east side of Pennsylvania. Crazy, right. I still go to Cleveland every once in a while to visit family. Small world...
Sonic Frontiers and God of War shall meet in an epic battle for third place on the sales charts behind juggernauts Modern Warfare II and Pokémon. Both SF and GOW will do just fine. Ones got quality reputation behind it and the other is the biggest/most well known gaming character not named Mario.
@Reeneman Don't be that guy thay bashes another platform just because its not your platform of choice. It's not cool. Also, Gamepass is incredible value for the price. You can't knock it at all and I say that as a gamer, not an Xbox fan boy!
