Naughty Dog has dropped another short but sweet comparison video that pits PS5 remake The Last of Us: Part I against its last-gen counterparts. This time around it's the turn of the PS4 remaster which released in 2014, just one year after the PS3 original. The clip compares a few seconds of the introductory sequence when Joel and Sarah start to realise what's gone wrong after Tommy picks them up in his car. Check it out above.
As you can probably tell, there's so, so much more detail in the PS5 remake that really brings the fire raging inside the barn to life. There's even a bit of debris that falls off the rooftop not present in the PS4 remaster! Put that on the back of the box! It looks pretty incredible, ensuring this will be one of the best-looking games on PS5 when it releases in a few weeks on 2nd September 2022.
This is the second time Naughty Dog has published comparisons between the PS5 remake and PS4 remaster — the first one can be viewed through the link. An official deep dive was also uploaded last month that tells you everything there is to know about the current-gen remake.
Pre-orders for the game are now available.

Looks nice.
But not 59.99 nice.
That's a house.
Or was, rather.
I'll summarize what all comments will be here:
"Cash grab"
"$70 too much"
"Barely a difference"
"Not buying it"
Meanwhile, it will sell very well once it's released. This community is not a good representation of the general gaming landscape.
Looks better. Hopefully the rest of the game is similarly upgraded! I know I’m a sucker, but TLOU is my favorite game ever besides FFXIV, so I’m excited for this despite the high price. If they give this same treatment and pricing to other “remakes” I’ll probably pass, but I’m there day 1 for tlou.
That’s not Ellie, they aren’t the same person no matter how much Joel wishes they were 😉
@nessisonett D'oh!
@nicc83 $69.99* nice
"OMG I was so wrong this is so much better than I originally thought! I This remake was totally worth it!" -No one who is not supporting this remake.
"Omg I was so wrong this is a completely pointless remake after all. Playstation can take that $70 price tag and shove it." -No one who is supporting this remake.
@nicc83
The game itself was never 59.99$ nice.
That looks stunning
Has more detail… what really??
Most exciting news of this year.
Is it just me that doesn’t mind these remakes then? I think it’s a great idea tbh especially with games as good as this!? Is that wrong lol
I'm just gonna say I think it looks great.
@Shstrick I’m down man, is factions included?
I'm glad they edited out the B word.
@Mikey856 Yes it is wrong cause it's a game that never needed a remake cause of how well the original holds up. It is a waste of resources that could've been spent elsewhere and they are being incredibly scummy with it by charging 70$.
I loath censorship.
@bpomber I disagree regarding the community, we have a nice variety of opinions regarding this remake here.
@bpomber And yet somehow, you only provided one side of the comments. Here's the other:
“Don't like it don't buy it!”
“So many haters”
“So now it’s fashionable to dunk on this series”
“Too bad if you can’t afford it.”
It does look amazing, to say photo realistic wouldn't be an exaggeration, it's just a shame that graphics are way down my list of what makes a good game. Whilst I enjoyed the last of us 1 immensely it was never the graphics that did it for me, they were just the icing on the already delicious cake, and for that reason I'll save my money for something else, like a delicious cake.
@Mikey856
No, you’re not the only one. In fairness, people would be happy enough with remakes, if they didn’t have to pay more than a negligible amount for them. I guess existing owners just don’t understand that this game wasn’t made for them.
@nicc83 more like 39.99
Is it wierd that this game comes out in like a few weeks and they haven't announced a state of play like they do with the rest of the 1st party titles? Really think something wierd is happening with Sony behind the scene.
@Americansamurai1 probably think they don’t need a state of play. Considering it’s been released twice already
@Artois2 yeah your probably right.
I'm SO bored of hearing about this remake. Surely everyone has made their mind up either way by now???
I'm so sick of seeing ***** about this game, naughty dog need a new project.
To me, the new version makes the PS4 version graphics look a bit like the Telltale Walking Dead game in comparison.
Why would anyone play this over Xenoblade Chronicles 3 baby!
@Daveuppercut Cake is a lie.
It will be interesting to see what the community reactions to the Dead Space remake are when the price is revealed......And yes, I realize that's not going to be an 'apples to apples' comparison regarding this game since there's only one version of Dead Space and it's two console generations removed.
this would have been fun if it eas April 1st today
It's absolutely insane this game is not a straight to PS PLUS PREMIUM service lol It would bring a ton of subscribers and not face this (deserved) backlash!
The game will sell well but sets a horrible precedent which will be felt for many years to come.
Don't be surprised if more franchises do "Remakes" of games less than 10 years old instead of making New IPs for us to enjoy.
The lack of creativity in Hollywood is seeping its way into gaming.
@bpomber I think your comment being near the top early on has drastically reduced many of the cash grab not buying it comments or they've just got sick and tired of saying it all the time on every single TLoUremake post anyway. And now that I've responded to your comment there will definitely be someone underneath me saying cash grab after reading my comment just to try and frustrate or be funny about it which is fair enough. Totally agree by the way. I enjoy this Push Square community a lot but it doesn't represent the entire Last of Us community not even close
It's times like these that my Sony rewards points come in handy.
@Mikey856 I quite like remakes as graphics don't necessarily make the game but updated graphics can definitely improve an aging game that was already great. I often have trouble getting into games I once loved because my expectations of how things should look increases over time. Remakes fix that problem.
I recently got a PS5 (thanks to Amazon invite, not sony) and i'm still not buying this. $70 for a PS3 game??
@Mikey856 I always say I wouldn't complain if all of my favourite games were remade. I love a remake of a great game and can't wait for this beauty.
My gf missed it first time around too. With the new show coming she'll be happy to tear through this.
@Royalblues the story didn't need to be changed its absolutely fine as it is if they wanted the second game to fit more with it they should've written it that way since it's a sequel & was written after the first game released lol
@__jamiie Agreed, let sleeping dogs lie, would love a ps5 remake of sleeping dogs with ray traced pork buns though
I'll be waiting for the PC version going to the best way to play
@Netret0120 thats been going on for allmost a decade now? Remakes and remasters were a thing since ps4 launched basically
@Smiffy01 Ray traced pork buns! 🤣🤣🤣
I'd personally love to see Pong in 4K at 120fps. I would definitely pay £69.99 for that or wait to see if it arrives on Game Pass.
@Mikey856
You not wrong, the way I see it, if want it buy it, if you don’t then don’t buy.
My only gripe is it takes developers time away from making a new AAA game.
The counter argument is they could be using the remake on developers learning the trade so they can get up to speed quicker and develop their skills etc.
@__jamiie Hey it might happen, check out Atari's recharged series
They will re release last of us 2 ps5 remaster next with leaves falling from trees and call it a new game
@Smiffy01 I'd completely forgotten about that. 🤣
@bpomber Ah a nice unbiased opinion from someone who clearly isn't a massive fan of said thing. Honestly i don't think it will sell great why? Because its a PS5 exclusive remaster at $70 and when Holiday time comes and people want a PS5 for Xmas they are most likely going to ask for this little niche game about a Father and his Boy. Will it sell well in the sense it makes money? Over time maybe but i don't think its going to be a huge hit. I'm sure as hell not buying it though until its much cheaper especially as the next few months are going to be busy with actual new games that are more worthy of me spending 60 to 70 quid on them.
Nintendo released an HD upscaling of Twilight Princess with an amiibo when it was already playable in its previous format on the same system and people ate that up.
Naughty Dog completely
rebuildsreplaces the engine and graphics of a game released two generations ago leveraging the new console's capabilities and people have an aneurysm.Don't want it, don't buy it. Play your old version then or wait for a sale. Solved.
Regardless of what you think of this, can we all agree the development time would have been better spent on a new IP or a sequel to an established IP rather than ANOTHER remake of this game.
@ChromaticDracula they're using the same engine that tlou2 uses so saying they completely rebuilt the engine for this re remaster is a stretch
@marnelljm or a remake of a game that needed it like jak & daxter lol
@marnelljm yes I somewhat agree on a surface level that a new IP would be better time spent. What if the new IP at Naughtydog is not ready to start full development on yet so therefore there's teams working on this remake instead and will also gain them vital experience working with the PS5 on this remake for their next IP. The next factions has got bigger so a lot will currently be on that. I think it's very likely a new IP from Naughtydog is happening and a part 3 but I think that's a little early right now for full development. Obviously is all guess as to what is happening at Naughtydog and my guess right now is factions released middle of 2023. New IP also announced in 2023 and releases 2025 and part 3 releases 2026 or could be part 3 before New IP
@Would_you_kindly You are correct and I've edited my original post.
@kyleforrester87 Dont have a Switch thats one issue ill get day one the Last of Us. 🤪
@ChromaticDracula I agree Skyrim how many releases with the same bugs oh yeah you get a resolution boost and framerate boost.
@Styledvinny79 Thats more effort then Nintendo puts in there rerereleases already.
@Flaming_Kaiser didn't even do a framerate boost for Skyrim on the ps4 you can use a mod to get 60fps but they couldn't be bothered to do it themselves lol
i kinda like it. will buy it when its €19 like Last of Us 2 (on sale). I would feel bad to pay more for a game i already own. Its not a simple remaster for sure but its not a true remake like FF7R or RE2R either. Its more like a super remaster with almost all assets updated
The only thing funnier than not paying £69.99 for this is watching other people convince themselves it's well worth paying £69.99 for this 😂😅🤣
@Flaming_Kaiser 😂😂 you must be joking!? Zelda links awakening is an easy example. Listen I’m not arguing but this last of us part 1 is a complete joke - if it was 9.99 like uncharted yes but not 60 quid. It is an absolute disgrace.
@Flaming_Kaiser Honestly! lol yeah I definitely paid just about full price each time I bought Skyrim. And in the end I will have bought Skyrim more times than I have TLOU: Part 1 so how can I complain.
Maybe we've all become wiser since all the Skyrims and GTAs and Sonic the Hedgehogs, etc but if there's one company I don't mind spending the extra cash on, it's Naughty Dog. You get what you pay for with ND which can't be said about a lot of other games these days.
Maybe it's situational... I'm not someone who buys more than maybe 2-3 brand new games per year. This is going to be one of the 2-3 I pay full price for for the entire 2022 year. Those who do it more often are likely making up a large chunk of the ones complaining and I totally get it. But discrediting the work these folks do and did isn't really fair.
For example, I can't even imagine the amount of time and work that goes into doing those facial animations for even one cutscene. There's a reason why every company isn't doing actual believable, emotion-rich facial expressions in their games and where the words actually match up with their lips perfectly.
Ok 😏word up son
@ChromaticDracula TP didn't already have a remaster and Nintendo didn't charge $70. Whataboutism and false equivalency in one post congrats.
@TrickyDicky99 I don't think it matters that GoW is a ps4 game. Santa Monica never disappoints in the graphics department. Although I do look forward to a couple years from now when first party studios are taking full advantage of the ps5 unique architecture. I loved Miles Morales, but every time i was crawling through a vent, I thought, this is a loading screen. Although it does work for the character.
"The Last of Us PS5 Remake Compared to PS4 Remaster, Has More Detail". No kiddin'? Who would have EVER thought the new version was going to have more detail?
@Nacheis besides this , the last of us mp game , they are also working on an unannounced project. so ya they are working on stuff
@Royalblues less than 1 in 5? Ok those 0.5 people out there hold your hands/hand up...how can you have less than 1 in 5?
As a massive last of us fan this is a day one purchase completed part 2 again recently so I am looking forward to this ! Games cost money at the end of the day but I do get why people are moaning but it you play it for like over a 100 hours well worth the dollar
@Royalblues yeah it got me..🤣
@WallyWest How could they look at Mario 64 and Sunshine what was done besides making it run. Zelda how many times can you rerelease that what a bull.
@Would_you_kindly Holy crap isnt that a joke. 🤣
It does!? Oh boy! I was worried they was going for less details this time.
Well colour me surprised! Who would have thought it /s
Stop just stop. It's utterly pathetic, at this point you might as well stick a "sponsored by last of us part 1" on the top of your website. This constant promotion of this money grabbing rip off is ridiculous. There is absolutely nothing positive about this scam. 70 quid for a retextured ps3 game is barbaric
@bpomber I won't be buying it, I already have a remastered version and the originals. Why would I be stupid and put out another 70 for a game I already played a few times and is great as the first time was, it loses magic fast and part 2 just didn't live up to the first.
@themightyant I hope so if they have been working on this for as long as they have now. Biggest greed coming through, Im pretty much done with the new naughty dog.
@TrickyDicky99 That's ridiculous. Then every PC game is as well since they are generally designed to also run on older systems. The fact is that most people don't even have a PS5 yet. GoW was a masterclass in game design.
@Flaming_Kaiser Whataboutism doesn't excuse ND and Sony.
@twitchtvpat Studios always say they have a project going. They make up a demo of the ideal to get investors on board and hype up for preorders way before they even have a game going. They are a small team and do you really think they have time when their small team is kicking the can for ideals everyday for a few hrs and working on this graphical overhaul where they are taking every scene and tweaking the characters so much they show way more emotion than needed, you might as well just skip all that and just film actors to put in the scene. Would be faster and probably cheaper in the long run.
@TrickyDicky99 it's nonsensical not whatever you typed. And you're referencing a time when games took way less time and money to make. When game development got longer, look at the Ps4. The first 2 years basically just had Killzone and inFamous from first party. That's basically it. So your argument falls apart rather quickly.
A great game is a great game, whether it's on the Switch, PC, last Gen hardware, Xbox. It's going to be a great game and if you don't want to play it, I couldn't care less. Play nothing until next year when the ps5 exclusives hit.
OK late to the party of moaners on this one; but doesn't stop me trying.......
fgs - how dumb do they think peeps are?
@TrickyDicky99 And you're going to complain about something you can't control. I thought it was common knowledge that you don't get games that really take advantage of the hardware until three years in
@Flaming_Kaiser no it runs at 30fps on PS4 but there's a mod someone made that can increase it to 60fps, using mods disables trophies though lol
@TrickyDicky99 no I'm not new to gaming. I had the NES on release before Super Mario Bros was a thing. Again, completely different Era. I think you're misremembering the launch titles for ps3 and ps4. I already stated that ps5 already has more exclusives than ps4 did in the same time frame. I can't believe you are still going on about this. What exactly do you want GoW Ragnarok to be that it's not going to be? You said it wasn't about the graphics. So what do want? Is Gotham Knights going to be a better game because it's next Gen exclusive? Current Gen for me but next Gen for 80% of the Playstation owners
@Would_you_kindly So its even more lazy...
I'm certain this hasn't been suggested before, .... but man, for the price and what's actually been done here,..... I must beb honest it feels like this is a cash grab.
I know I know it's so shameful of me as a PlayStation fan to suggest Sony and ND would ever do such a thing, I am supposed to remain loyal and willfully ignorant to anything other than them doing no wrong, but.....
yah
cash grab
@TrickyDicky99 Yeah I'm excited for that too but Santa Monica was never going to rebuild their engine for this sequel. They didn't want people to wait that long to finish the story. I think building on what's already there is going to make this something special. Enemy variety and bosses suffered in the first game since it took them so long to get the axe mechanics working and the no-cut camera. Basically they built a game engine specifically for that game. I'm excited to see whatever Cory Barlog is working on which will surely be a ps5 exclusive.
