Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's open beta is live now to all PlayStation players, running until Tuesday 20th September, before taking a couple of days rest, and kicking off again for the weekend on the 22nd. The beta is available for all players on PS5 and PS4, and there is a surprising amount to dive into, and you don't even need a PlayStation Plus subscription to do so.
There are four maps to play in a series of different game modes, including Team Deathmatch, Domination, Prisoner Rescue, Knockout and Search and Destroy. There are 10 unique items to unlock as you level up, rewarding you with cosmetics that will be unlocked immediately if you decide to pick up the full game at launch (on 28th October).
The timing on this one is fantastic, considering that exclusive Oni Operator skin was just announced amidst the ongoing war of words between Sony and Microsoft regarding Call of Duty exclusivity.

Played the beta a bit. I’m more into Counter Strike, so the destruction mode was fun I guess. But being almost forced to play with mouse and keyboard players just killed the game for me.
I might try it again when it lands on Gamepass someday.
Thank god it's a small download around 29GB.
But they said no public beta in 2009? Liars!!!!
@SoulChimera ...'We would never say something as definitive as "No Beta Ever!" as that's simply not how we work. We'll do an internal beta, if we feel a public one is needed, we'll explore that route as well.'
@riceNpea Yeah, I almost didn't bother posting, as that sort of ruined the joke as a back door for them. Haha. But still, 13 years to change their minds. Haha.
Played 3 games and it was awful still full of campers sat in windows definetly not for me ill stick to blops1 and modernwarfare 2 backwards compat 👍
Completely disagree with the negative comments above.
MWII is back to cod at its best and a perfectly feeling sequel to the 2019 MW.
Every multiplayer game has campers so you’re never going to get away from that but just up your game and you won’t struggle against them. Simple really. Plus i’ve not struggled with them or PC players at all since it when live Friday. So maybe people just aren’t as good as they think they are 🤷🏻
@Jacko11 hahaha wow weve got a cod pro in the chat 🤣 how can u deal with campers sat in a window holding down a corner and no way round?? Please explain if ur so good
@Jacko11 rocket league doesnt have campers or fall guys or mortal combat so guess its not every multiplayer games its a select few fps
Spent ~3 hours in demo. Well, for me this part feels awesome, I have same vibes the original MW2 gave me in 2009. Now I even want to pre-order it
@Kyevo8814 simply find a way to take them out? Its really not that difficult mate.
And clearly I was talking about shooters, anyone who isn’t a moron could see that.
@Jacko11 Jacko, he played 3 whole games of the beta, he knows what he's talking about so don't argue 😆
@Jacko11 u tell me how to take him out around a corner and hes gonna kill u as soon as u pop out?? Not just give a ***** answer dint explain anything cod pro
Played it for a while... FPS is not my kind of a game (with the exception being COD BO II) but this one is so awesome!
@riceNpea mate iv played cod since the start i no what im talking about 3 games or not its the same game for over 20 years come on dude 🤣
@Kyevo8814 it was kind of annoying that the campers were just sitting there but still got the hand of it after 2-3 games
@VivianXD2464 im 34 mate i havnt got the patience for it anymore 🤣 ill stick to blops 1 but its nice to see people loving it the graphics are stunning on ps5
@Kyevo8814 mate, you've judged the beta after only 3 games. That's premature. I've played every COD and some are better than others, so it can't be the same game, and you know that because you state you have preferences for 2 of them. Therefore 3 games on the new one is clearly not enough to form any kind of basis of judgement. You need a larger sample base otherwise all you're doing is reinforcing a bias you must have to be able to right it off so quickly.
@riceNpea the maps are to small, ttk to quick, campers, playing against mouse keyboard players is wrong guess im a boomer who nos what a good game use to be 🤣
@Kyevo8814 playing against M&K is an issue I agree but do you know if that is an option or a fixed feature?
And besides 3 games still isn't enough
@riceNpea its fixed dont think u can turn off option and 3 gamesbis enough for me its all i need to no 🤣 ill stick with ***** broken 2042
@riceNpea yeah he’s getting real mad now too and starting to swear. Needs to get himself a snicker and up his game 😂
I can say... COD is back at its rootes imo and I love it. I am more the guy of the bigger maps and vehicles so I have to wait for that but what I have seen and played till I reached level 15 cap for week one is awesome. On Sep. 22nd week 2 is startig to reach level cap 30 and get all the beta rewards for the full game. You need about 229k points to reach level 30. For level 15 it was 89k.
@riceNpea I meant as in it took 3 games to get used to the campers... I played for atleast 6 hours maybe.
And yes you're right, I've mostly played BO2 (and a little bit of WarZone) but after BO2 I jumped to BO4 and it felt different so I didn't even bother buying Vanguard.
I've played a few hours worth of it and it's fairly solid. There's nothing special about it, as far as I've been able to see (it's yet another iteration of COD MP), but I'll eventually be getting the game at some point and will make my mind up on the full version once I've spent enough time with it. For now though the Beta is fun and something new to play while I await, Gotham Knights, the RE 8 DLC, GOW: Ragnarok, The Callisto Protocol and Dead Space Remake. After that, I'll grab MW2.
The beta says it's 30gb on the ps store but it's 45gb when you download it , did it really need a 15gb update for the beta already lol
@Jacko11 let's see if they force warzone into it & continuously break it with every update lol
Edit* just started the beta they definitly have warzone 2.0 is in the launcher but locked 🙈
@Kyevo8814 couldnt find a match on the BC mw2 I hope they release the multiplayer part of the remaster as a free update when Microsoft buys them
@Would_you_kindly yeah servers can be quiet sometimes but usually at weekend ull find some same with blackops just got a series x a month ago and love it backwards compat is good
@Would_you_kindly mw2 remaster multiplayer would be a dream 🙏
Played the beta over the weekend with my buddies. Has solid gameplay but even tho it’s beta the lack of selection in weapons in each class very underwhelming. I’ll pick up MW II when it’s on a deep sale as I want to play the campaign only. Got to many other great games that are releasing is in my list I’d rather play.
@SoulChimera bruh how long have you been sitting on that one 😂
@Kyevo8814 playing the beta now , there is a crossplay toggle in account & network settings
Edit* but you can't turn off playing against players using a k&m on their playstation
@Would_you_kindly thats a shame its why i stopped playing pubg because alot of people use it on that and the aim assist is non existent to counter act it
@Would_you_kindly no idea where this line of dialogue comes from about it breaking the game either.
Modern Warfare 2019 was solid right the way through. Cold War was bad cause it was just a bad game all round. Vanguard was decent online with a weak campaign.
Warzone didn’t break anything.
More evidence of people who don’t play the game airing their baseless thoughts.
@Jacko11 I bought the game when it released they broke lots of things when they integrated warzone you really like defending Activision don't you lol
@Would_you_kindly defending Activision is one thing which isn’t the case here, check yourself.
Simply defending a game thats of good quality against people who played for 3 hours and bounced, but proceed to make comments like its their main
@Cherip-the-Ripper about 13 years. Haha. I’ve got a great one from 1996 in the chamber for Bubsy 3D. Just need someone to remake it now.
@Jacko11 if you do a quick Google search you'll see theres been many instances when warzone updates have rendered modern warfare unplayable aswell as making people have to redownload the entire game.
@Jacko11 Warzone and MW2019 are on the same SKU, and updating one or the other can cause potential knock-on effects for either of those modes. Activision also integrated CW, and Vanguard into that experience as well, which also caused a lot of issues that needed to be tested and fixed by hundreds of QA testers and Engineers, respectively.
Even now there are a lot of issues, like the laggy rich presence, some UI errors in the middle of combat that take functionality from the game for brief moments, and some challenges not tracking correctly, along with the performance issues that are brought up with each update.
It's a bloated SKU, and it's because WZ wasn't intended to last as long as it did, but it was a massive success and still is.
There was even a couple weeks relatively recently (within the last few months or so) where a UI error would pop up on screen seemingly at random. It didn't get fixed for a while as MW2019 was already sunsetted.
But since WZ was being updated, and they're on the same SKU, MW was getting knock-on effects making a lot of content unplayable.
The hope now, is that MW2 and WZ2 are on different SKUs. Which I think should be the case. Now updates can be relegated to WZ2 and MW2 on their individual SKUs, and WZ and MW can remain in a stable state.
@Constable_What none of these issues affected myself or my friends….
@Jacko11 That's how bugs work sometimes. You and your friends didn't notice them, were not playing when they were present, or the bugs were not present on your system.
They were there however, for many users, there. It's what makes testing for bugs really difficult for QA teams, in that, you need a team to test for them. I've been a part of a few QA teams, and sometimes team members didn't notice the bugs, the bugs appeared slightly different on their platforms, or the bug just wasn't present...even on the same platform.
Downloaded this one, still the same ole running around shooting ppl
