Update: The City of London Police has confirmed that it's arrested a 17-year-old on suspicion of hacking. It's being reported that this is (one of) the same individual(s) behind the recent Rockstar incident. The individual is currently in police custody.
Original Story: While developer Rockstar has moved to confirm that this weekend’s unprecedented GTA 6 leak will not impact the game’s development, you can rest assured that the relevant authorities will be hot on the case. And a recent incident with Uber, allegedly instigated by a group named Lapsus$, suggests that the FBI and US Department of Justice may already be involved.
In a statement on its own issues, Uber said: “We believe that this attacker or attackers is affiliated with a hacking group called Lapsus$, which has been increasingly active over the last year or so. This group typically uses similar techniques to target technology companies, and in 2022 alone has breached Microsoft, Cisco, Samsung, Nvidia, and Okta, among others. There are also reports over the weekend that this same actor breached video game maker Rockstar Games. We are in close coordination with the FBI and US Department of Justice on this matter and will continue to support their efforts.”
It should be noted that Uber appears to be connecting the dots here, and seeing as this is a criminal investigation, it’s unlikely we’ll get any firm word on the perpetrators for quite some time. Nevertheless, numerous members of Lapsus$ have been arrested in the UK as recently as March 2022, with one notorious 16-year-old alleged to have amassed a $14 million fortune through hacking.

Don't you mean FIB lol
Removed - trolling/baiting
bro who really cares , can’t believe it’s that serious leaking a video game . what real harm does it cause ? whether leaks are shown or not , things remain exactly the same
@dfsfdads Nah, that's a crazy way of looking at things.
@dfsfdads
That is about the most entitled statement I have ever seen on this site. Rockstar are not at fault for not revealing a game that as you could see was clearly not ready to be shown to the public.
@nomither6
This hacker/hackers broke numerous laws and have also attacked several other companies including Uber. They are a major threat and need to be stopped. That's why the FBI is involved. I would think that would have been obvious but I guess sadly not.
@PegasusActual93 they’re trying to mesh “leaker” and “hacker” together and blur the lines
@nomither6
Excuse me...what? Yes the hacker leaked the data but they still you know......hacked companies which is you know....illegal. Hence the FBI involvement.
@Would_you_kindly I think it's because they are American companies. Unless you're just joking, in which case, nevermind.
@nomither6 it's theft.
You picked the wrong house fool!
@get2sammyb its not crazy, I would say stupid more like it lol what the heck.
Ah sh*t here we go againe
I guess the FBI has started recruiting them when they are young...
@dfsfdads You're what's wrong with modern gaming fans.
Companies owe you and us fans nothing, when they want to show stuff its up to them.
@nomither6 The leaking isn't whats wrong its how they went about getting said leaks.
@dfsfdads bruh what is wrong with you? How is it Rockstar's fault? They didn't want to reveal it officially until they're sure that they are ready for it to be announced. We saw what happened with the GTA Trilogy. Maybe R* didn't want another GTA trilogy mess. Do you actually support the hacker?
and like @HeeHo said, its up to R* whenever they want to show it
@HeeHo
That account was only created a couple hours ago and that has been the only comment. Everything about this screams to me a troll and not even a good one at that.
@FoxMcMuffin
Or these hackers are a major potential threat to national security and broke numerous laws. Why do you types have to make everything about idiotic inflammatory political conspiracy theories? It's just exhausting
I'd be scared to be involved in anything like this since you can get in so much trouble. Honestly I don't know how anyone can do it just to show off unfinished footage of a game.
@Deadlyblack
They hacked a major business- illegal
Stole data- illegal
Tried to hold data for ransom- illegal
Tried to sell stolen data on a black market- illegal
Yeah when they get caught (and they will get caught) you are talking some serious jail time.
Plot twist. The leaker ‘declassified’ the data before leaking it. 😅
@JJ2 hahaha. Good one!
@nomither6 People who have no idea how game development works will see the game and will think that's how the final game will look like. Also the leaked images of glitches will haunt internet and seriously hurt brand.
And for the most, if I come over your house and use your phone to share your private selfies and share it over the internet without you acknowledging it,.you wouldn't be happy too.
It's a crime. The group or hacker stole what doesn't belong to them. Furthermore, they leaked source code of the game which can alone delay the game for years to come.
To you it may seem like what's a Biggie, but it's because it's not you who got stolen from.
Hackers are on the run with a 5 star wanted level.
I wish I had those skills. F the system!
FBI probably told him to hack it so they could blame Trump
Everyone acting like it's the end of the world. It's just a video game leak. Get a grip of yourselves. The hack though is pretty impressive for a 16 year old.
You can be sure the likes of poor old GTA Forums are being "persuaded" to assist Take-two & the authorities with whatever info they'd had on the alleged hacker (& collaborate with the cyber sleuthing from Rockstar's end).
The criminal aspect (if/when the hackers are found),will be significant,but not as much as their being sued into oblivion by Take-two's lawyers...they'll be lucky to access a C64 by the time they're finished!
the boy is in the UK, 16 (if true) he wont get extradited. FBI can only pass on info.
he will get 18month and be banned from owning a PC for a few years.
but its the internet and people making it out like he shot someone!
why hack your not gona play gta 6 lucky if theres 20 mins of playable content
I came into this comment section for some tin foil, but it looks like we're all out
The FBI has lost all credibility over the last few years. We'll see what they come up with but I'm just as likely to believe they've fabricated whatever story comes from this.
@zupertramp it was just a joke because that's what the FBI is called in GTA lol
@anoyonmus the GTA trilogy was a mess because 2k / rockstar outsourced it to a company that does mobile ports & doesn't have a great track record , they put in minimum effort for maximum profit & it backfired
@Would_you_kindly oooooh. Okay, then yeah ignore me. Lol.
But wow... this comments section.
@stvevan I doubt he will serve any jail time
a game with morally questionable content becomes a victim of the morally questionable ,oh the irony.
@tallythwack most probably not, it was more what i think is likely than the lock him up for years brigade
Clever enough to hack Rockstar, but not smart enough to not get caught? Amateur 😂
@nomither6 Its company code so its serious. What if someone steal the recipe of Coca Cola its only soda.
@tallythwack I dunno I doubt the kids wealthy enough to pay them off & brush it under the carpet like a certain someone did with a much more serious offence
I hope he gets locked up ..and not one of them who ends up being given a job...need to be punished not rewarded
It’s not too often that I hear a hacker actually getting caught. I don’t feel bad for the guy.
@FuzzieGinge88 I mean, as long as you can send an email you're clever enough to hack a site. It's just a matter of finding someone gullible enough to give you their password.
@Flaming_Kaiser What about water brands it’s only water ?
Take-Two lawyers smell blood in the water, he will be lucky if all he gets is prison time. Is also possible he goes to prison and has to pay millions in damages.
He must be having severe fear diarrhea right about now, all for what clout and/or to make some money selling stolen hard work by Rockstar devs.
A 17 year old... so just a kid looking for clout. Very sad, what an idiot.
@juanalf you are talking complete and utter nonsense. he is 17 what they going to get off him? pocket money?
you make it out like he took personal data, state secrets and tried to ransom R* with their own kids. talk about an over reaction.
Well, hopefully we can talk about more interesting stuff again, now that this situation is apparently dealt with.
@stvevan The hacker groups make millions of of this kind off fraud.. so yes damages and prison time could be on the cards.
I hope the punishment deters others from trying something similar.
Busted.
maybe best to stop at the first million 😂
Does anyone wonder how our world go so messed up that we have entire multi-trillion dollars of global industries with entire tracks of "education" geared around mastering the ever complicated and technologically sophisticated field of information security, and nearly all of it is toppled on a regular and recurring basis by a bunch of children in middle and high school? If infosec can at no point in it's history have kept up with foiling children.........why do we even bother pretending it exists?
Hire this guy in a Cyber Security role
It doesn't sound like he will get any $$$ out of Rockstar then
That kid is damn lucky he's only 17. In the grand scheme of things, pulling off something this big will probably be worth it for him in some kind of twisted long term way.
I applaud him for the leaks.
Through every gta game is always ***** law enforcement and even promote hacking in the game its self. But when some kid decides to apply it to the real world. Then rocket star wants law enforcement help. Thank God and atleast it was a cyber attack on the company who promotes this kind of thing. Instead of some school or innocent child getting shot.
Changes nothing for the dude bros who play these lame games.
@AstraeaV I applaud him for hacking rockstar, they deserve it tbh with their substantial greed, no sympathy for the big fat cats bullies 😤😤
Good, kids today need to learn they're not necessarily safe sat behind a keyboard in their bedroom.
@Grimwood I'm going to keep on giving him applaud so loud that you won't be able to bear it, rockstar deserve this, in fact even worse for all the microtransactions and their online gambling garbage they put on people, I will not stand down to injustice 😎😎💪💪fade away.....
@huyi Yeah this kid did great with the leaks and will now get a nice six figure tech job. Rockstar didn't have to abandon their current fans for new ones but they did and now the source code is out there. Ha!
@Grimwood Nah, only the ones cying deserve to be hacked. But most of you aren't even worth it to hack. You got nothing. The source code for GTA5 is out there now no matter how upset you are.
@naruball The tech job he secures soon after will be very lucrative and inspire more hacks. Rockstar should stop announcing games and showing nothing then maybe they will learn.
@AstraeaV not sure if that's always the case. We'll see.
Just wanted to say, I came here for the entertainment of the comment section and you guys didn't disappoint. Good work out there.
@AstraeaV even if he has actual technical skills and not just being adept at social engineering (which I'm not sure that'd be benefit to many tech companies), he'd probably still have an uphill battle on getting hired, needing to prove that he won't compromise the security of the firm he's working at. I think he'd be in a much better position to get hired by going through legal channels to report security vulnerabilities without leaking data, such as a bug bounty program, if these companies had them (but again assuming the breaches were due to vulnerabilities in the tech and not social engineering, which companies usually don't accept in their bug bounties).
Cybersecurity is pretty important these days. Companies don't want people who are just gonna leak all their private data. There are certainly instances of big name hackers getting hired, but did those hackers also leak private data?
Great to see him arrested, hope he goes to juvenile prison too.
@Would_you_kindly or is it *F*emale *B*ody *I*nspector like that episode from the new season of Cobra Kai (when the drug lords think they’re actually FBI lol).
@BritneyfR_ee that jokes from friends someone gives a shirt with it on to Rachel & Ross asks what size it is because he wants it lol
That's what you get when the industry is promoting hacking with games like Watch Dogs. They should've known better. SMH.
@AstraeaV he played them a dam fool lol 😂😂
@AstraeaV they will never learn, apart from greed and disgust, more hellish things need to happen to show justice imo
@Octane it's not about that, it's the injustice that rockstar put in their online games, they think of greed over gameplay & creativity and this hacker was the only justice in taking back that feeling! more needs to happen to the fat cats in suits before they fall imo, the billions they make from GTA online can never be redeemed, with any sort of karma! I just want to see rebellion and vigilant behaviour knowing that there are people out there fighting against this situation!!
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes
' DAVID TAKES DOWN GOLIATH!" the old story never gets old, I got my pop corn im loving IT!!
At least he achieved one thing, the leak pretty much confirms that this game is not worth supporting, so it was a good heads-up. It’s actually quite ironic one is being imprisoned over this game, whether he was morally incorrect or not.
Why am I not surprised it was a kid/teenager that leaked the footage? lol
@AstraeaV so basically like that guy who jailed break the PS3 and he was forced to work for apple?
@KidBoruto I hope they put the point across, that's all I can say on the matter
@huyi He got a job at Facebook hacking and collecting our date. Sounds like a win to me. To quote the fake German billionaire, "Sometimes crime does pay.".
