Just yesterday, we learned Stranger Things star David Harbour would become the first actor to sign on for the Gran Turismo movie. Hot of the heels of that announcement, The Hollywood Reporter is back with another scoop on this film based on the racing series. Orlando Bloom is set to join Harbour on the project.
Widely known for his roles in The Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean, among others, the actor will play the part of "a hungry marketing exec who is selling the sport of motor racing … and just may believe in its art, too". We're not completely clear on what that means, either.
Yes, PlayStation Productions is making a film based on Sony's flagship racing game. It's based on the true story of a teenage Gran Turismo player who fulfils his dream of becoming an actual race car driver by competing in in-game competitions.
This role will be played by Archie Madekwe. You may recognise the young actor from Midsommar, See, and Voyagers.
Shooting on the movie begins next week, so it's very much underway. With all these names attached (and Neill Blomkamp directing), are you interested in watching this when it hits theatres next year? Tell us in the comments section below.

Blomkamp hasn’t made a decent movie since District 9 and now he makes NFT games. This doesn’t bode well.
@nessisonett I know everyone's allowed his opinion and all but that's some take there. You genuinely didn't even enjoy any of em?
@Cherip-the-Ripper he hated them so much even his comment doesn't want to be seen associated with it 😁
Looking forward to seeing Orlando Bloom drive around several tracks for enough prize money to buy a new turbo....then move onto a slightly harder track and repeat the process to buy a better car.
@The_Moose if at some point he gets out of the car to punch Justin Beiber I may go and watch the film.
@riceNpea It wouldn't even be demanded of him in the script I imagine.
@The_Moose there's going to be a script?! I assumed I'd get to press a button and skip all the dialogue to get to the races.
They run as if the very whips of their masters were behind them!
@Cherip-the-Ripper Elysium was dry stale toast as a movie. Any hint of a decent premise was lost when the movie decided to just be incredibly formulaic. It was impossible to take Sharlto Copley seriously either. Chappie was a Die Antwoord advert disguised as an insurance advert starring Barry from Eastenders. Doesn’t help that Die Antwoord are absolute scum of the Earth and the sort of crap they’ve pulled involving kids is too gross and genuinely criminal to repeat on a site like this. Apparently he also did a movie last year. Never heard of it and don’t plan on watching it. Very much sits with Shyamalan in terms of ‘promising filmmaker who never lives up to their first hit’.
Orlando Bloom is pretty much always Paris to me. Hard for me to get that image of him out of my head for whatever reason. I think it's one of those things where the character is just way too close to what I figure he's actually like. Idk.
Anyway, there are worse actors and this also isn't the dumbest premise so y'know, we'll see.
@nessisonett is it the dude that made chappie that's a good film
I reckon the best part of this movie will be whenever they race at Suzuka. Love that circuit.
That Orlanda Vroom made me laugh 😂. This could be a decent race movie, if they don't make a ridiculous plot like the latest Fast and Furious movies.
Who needs a movie based on Gran Turismo??? 🤣
Hey sony, heres an idea… focus on games, and stop making unnecessary movies and series and crap like that, you are becoming an Xbox One presentation at this point. (I still can’t believe that people over 12 years old thinks the uncharted movie was good)
@Would_you_kindly it is him yes
Talking cars yeah?
A failed actor looking for work. That's the byline.
@Cherip-the-Ripper
Elysium is a cinematic mess and Chappie was objectively terrible imo.
I share his view on Blomkampf’s work.
By the way why does this sound like a remake of “The Wizard” with Gran Turismo instead of Super Mario Bros 3?
@AlienigenX You do know Sony a movie departement?
Very exciting news! I loved Orlando Bloom in The Lord of the Rings.
