Today marks the arrival of numerous additions to the PS Plus Extra and Premium subscription tiers, including a handful of retro games. One of them, Syphon Filter 2, may be of particular interest. This stealth action game is the first game on Sony's service to feature both 50Hz and 60Hz modes.
In Europe, the classic games on PS Plus Premium are based on their 50Hz PAL versions, which run slower than the American, 60Hz, NTSC versions. This isn't ideal, but Sony promised a solution to allow everyone to run the superior versions, and it looks like Syphon Filter 2 is the guinea pig.
When you boot the game up, you can press the Options button and toggle between 50Hz and 60Hz in the menu. Presumably, this functionality will also make its way to other classic titles going forward, but Gabe Logan's second outing is currently the only one. A promising step forward, anyway.
Are you hoping for proper 60Hz support on PS Plus Premium classics? Get your tasers out in the comments section below.

It may be worth paying the extra after all, if this comes with all future releases.
Brilliant news, really pleased to see this!
@get2sammyb @Quintumply Don't know whether this is newsworthy or news at all but I noticed that there's a 2 hour trial version for Steelrising now. It doesn't appear in the trials folder though, I noticed it on the game's page. A game I highly recommend to all Soulslike fans. It is probably my favorite Soulslike ever so far.
But what about all the other Clasiscs that are still PAL only?
N.i.c.e. syphon filter 2 is a classic.word up son
Much more concerned with premium 3rd party PS1 and PSP titles not having trophies than I am 50Hz 60Hz. My argument is its the opposite of premium if a game comes with no trophies when it's on a modern console regardless of the games age
Awesome news, would be great if it becomes standard. Not playing a lot of retro games myself, but this puts the biggest gripe people had with PS implementation to rest.
sorry, i'm not going to praise them for such a basic feature that should have been standard! more importantly, they need to start releasing ps1 classics at a faster clip already.
Why keep the 50hz setting at all?
Unless I guess the game was PAL only and it would funk up timing or something in game.
Just release everything @ 60hz and be done with it.
@sword_9mm people seem to forget for some these games originally ran at 50Hz, and that is how they remember them.
Keeping an option to provide original experience, or superior variant, beats just offering 60Hz.
I think this my have more to do with Bend going above and beyond with their support to this program and less about Sony. They also added trophies to each game they've been assigned to port.
Also worth mentioning that Syphon Filter 2 was given full trophy support with a platinum just like the first one, so that’s cool to see.
Heads up that if you got this game on PS+ way back when they were giving away PSOne Classics you can download this for free.
@Hundred_Hand_Slap I was wondering why I was able to get this even though I'm a basic
My god... Refresh rate filter!
As European i could not care less about the 60Hz i played it all in 50Hz so i just want to play the game once more.
@Ken_Kaniff In the end Sony payed the bills.
@Flaming_Kaiser Doesn't matter, trophy support was stated by Sony that its purely optional. So this was 100% Bends decision to implement.
@Ken_Kaniff Of course it matters if Sony would have we are not wasting money on that then i would not be in there simple as that.
I'll be choosing the NTSC version of course.
