There was concern earlier in the week when it seemed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 would require a phone number in order to be playable on PS5 and PS4. However, further small print published by developer Infinity Ward reveals this will only be mandated on PC platforms; if you’re playing on PlayStation, then you should be good to go.
Overwatch 2 introduced the controversial security measure earlier this month, but it’s since been removed due to a strong backlash from fans. Ultimately, publisher Activision Blizzard wants to cut down on cheating, and by mandating a phone number it introduces an obstacle hackers have to overcome should their account get banned. Of course, like so many things in life, the requirement only serves to punish average players.
Fortunately, this won’t bother PlayStation owners, so all’s well that ends well. Are you relieved by this reveal? Wipe your brow in the comments section below.

Kinda knew it wouldn’t be for consoles.
I already choose to skip the game i wish them al the best with their game.
Makes sense. There is FAR less cheating on console. While "add phone number to play" is bad so is the amount of cheating on PC in multiplayer. Even if it's unpopular i'm glad someone is trying something different to reduce this.
Give my phone number to be able to play a video game? Seriously? Ok i will do it, but only after the $200K check they send me clears.
Was genuinely going give this a miss when I heard they wanted my number but now I'm going to reconsider.
The phone thing slightly makes sense for F2P titles where cheaters and smurfers just keep making new accounts, but for paid titles it doesn't.
Just wait until you need your Microsoft account instead, post buyout!!!🙄😂😱
Well thats good news but i'm still miffed about them charging for old maps..old maps as freebies i can get with but they really should be creating brand new maps for paid dlc packs...filthy move again..
@Perturbator
Warzone is tied into the game.
People use the main titles as a way to grind guns out faster.
Me I don’t play Warzone. I only play COD for a campaign run and then regular multiplayer. Specifically Domination and the occasional playlist of Harcore Team Deathmatch.
@Perturbator But couldn't they just use another PSN account?
Makes sense
PC gaming is rampant with cheating whereas its far less on consoles and permabans on consoles are much harder to circumvent
@Mythologue I was thinking of MW2 as a paid product, but as for F2P Warzone it is different of course. Honestly I haven't played COD in many years, but don't the mainline titles have multiplayer anymore?
Good. I hope to get this game eventually now, but wouldn't have purchased if this hadn't been updated. Glad to hear.
Good. I've had a COD account for years, so this pleases me.
I will be playing on PS5
Couldn’t care less if it requires a phone number, I’m happy to provide one on PC or console if it helps prevent duplicate accounts by hackers etc.
Why on earth people mind giving them their number, yet will give it to lord knows who else is beyond me.
My ex writing my number on a bathroom stall as a teenager would do more damage to my phone privacy than Activision using it for two factor authenticity.
Anyway, just my two pence. So either way I’m happy.
@themightyant I dont want to give my phonenumber to every corporate there is especially these ones because they are the worst around.
@TheElectroFunky Why should you want to provide all your data to every company around that how we got things like Google selling everything they got on you. It starts with a finger and in the end they will take your arm.
@Robocod If thats something thats required then i just wont be playing the game.
@Flaming_Kaiser I’m not providing all my data, I’m providing a number that I have done for a while to them now, and seen no scam messages, no alerts, nothing. They don’t even sell my number, I know, because I used to work for a mobile company here in the UK. So I’m well aware of who you should and shouldn’t give your number to. And who are known to sell them.
But that aside, even selling my number isn’t mine as such, I can change my number freely if I so desire and has little to no impact on my life.
Companies like Meta, having your number through WhatsApp, and clearly scanning messages or you wouldn’t have recommended ads for many an item you’ve WhatsApp talked about but never searched, things like that, that’s a problem. (Hence why I don’t use WhatsApp).
But a publisher and developer who’s had my number for years since I registered for one game or another on PC, and nothing has come of it, no, not worried about that.
I’m far more concerned with the wife having an Alexa, and privacy elsewhere to concern myself with if a publisher wants to one bell me.
But it’s each to their own, I’ve just worked in a job where I now know it’s more likely the delivery company you use, the TV company you use and so on is to sell your number than a publisher worth billions and has bigger fish to fry.
For example, here in the UK it’s been found many mobile companies sell your number, or (pass it on to interested but safe parties) as they say. So even having a mobile number isn’t private. It’s already changed hands more than you know.
So I just don’t see Activision having my number a problem. I’ve never had spam from them, or Microsoft, or come to think of it any company most people fear having their number.
Just Eat, Uber Meta and so forth on the other hand, completely different story.
Like when I entered my number for a delivery of a package, and sure enough, a fake DHL knew the exact time my order was due and so forth, yet without DHL or the company I bought off selling my number, that wouldn’t have been possible.
Again, everyone is scared of something, privacy for the most part when it comes to an interchangeable number doesn’t worry me as much as it may you.
@themightyant yeah you’re right, and anyway cheating on console is pretty much undetectable so why waste anyones time
@BartoxAbrasiveness The last Call of Dutys weren't getting much love or were just stuck in the middle so it would make sense putting more content into warzone which most people play since its free and they wouldn't be making much money off it
