Sony has today allowed media outlets (including ourselves) to share a sneak peek at the first five hours of God of War Ragnarok, but given how all anyone wants to talk about is frame rates at the moment, we figured it best to share what the game has to offer on PS5. There are two graphical modes to choose from, but two more are available if your TV set has HDMI 2.1 compatibility.
For a total of four graphical modes, they are:
- Favour Resolution
- 4K resolution at a locked 30fps
- Favour Performance
- a locked 60fps
- Favour Resolution (High Frame Rate)
- 4K resolution at a locked 40fps (TV with HDMI 2.1 support needed)
- Favour Performance (High Frame Rate)
- Targets 120fps (TV with HDMI 2.1 support needed)
In our God of War Ragnarok PS5 Hands On article, we stress that the production values and amount of polish that has gone into the game ensure it'll look outstanding no matter what graphics mode you opt for. "But when push comes to shove, this is a release all about chopping mythical creatures into pieces with a magical axe, and it feels fantastic; there’s tons of combo potential, even in these early exchanges, and the game runs butter smooth at 60fps."
If you want to upgrade your TV in time for God of War Ragnarok and take advantage of those two bonus graphics modes, be sure to check out our Best 4K TVs for PS5 in 2022 guide. Which mode will you choose? Let us know in the comments below.

Wow. Really rubbing salt into the wounds of other developers by giving this option, especially in light of other releases at 30fps.
These 40FPS resolution modes in Sony first party titles are great. Impressive that "Ragnorok" has one included straight out of the gate.
Just upgraded from a lg b7 oled to a c2 oled this week so this is good news for me personally
I would be carful with 120 fps here - this will more be an unlocked 60 fps mode than can go up to 120 fps in theory. I guess it will be like Horizon 2 where see a framerate in this mode of 60-90 fps during regular gameplay.
Impressive stuff by Santa Monica!! Can’t wait for the game it will be a blast.
@Bunchesopuppies 😅
Yes man, ive just ordered this game.
This is made me realise I’m not sure if my tv is 2.1 or not. I will have to check.
Great set of options.
And I still don’t get why people are happy with sub-60 fps. Call of Duty, FIFA etc. also are 60 or 120 fps, and as a developer I would focus only on them and spend my saved resources on the implementation of FSR 2.1 for great 4k-like visuals.
So glad I bought a tv with HDMI 2.1. It costed more but in the next couple of years it's to going to pay off.
Makes me wonder if my TV is capable of the 120fps option... will have to look into it!
Still debating picking this up at launch, or holding off until after the holidays. With Tactics Ogre on the way, I want nothing else to interrupt my run of that game, and this one likely would.
I was hoping for a 40fps 120Hz mode…maybe it’ll come a little later like it did with Rift Apart and Forbidden West.
Will be a locked 60fps for me. Even at 60fps the resolution (and the graphics overall) is still amazing imo
Amazing. 40fps is surprisingly smooth (coming from someone who has become a 60fps snob). Excited to try it out.
@LN78
Plague Tale: Requiem offers this as well and it works pretty good but not as smooth as in Ratchet & Clank or Miles Morales.
Favour Resolution HFR will be the way to go for me.
I wish the UK GoW console bundle was the same as the US one with the black cover plates and game disc.
60 fps all the way!
@BrotherFilmriss That's cool. Thanks for the tip.
At least there's a 60 option. I'll take that all day long.
Locked 60 for me… but I appreciate the options for sure! Well done Santa Monica
Well my telly is HDMI 2.0 so 60fps performance mode all the way for me.
Great work. Happy about the 40fps mode, have found that to be a sweetspot between frame rate and resolution. Shame it needs a very high end tv to run, would be great to see this become the new baseline
@Max_the_German FSR can even have its own issues. Furthermore even with FSR enabled people would complain about non-native 4K.
I think Santa Monica offers a fantastic set or visual modes here.
60 fps performance mode will be very close to your suggestion. The game uses its own upscaling while Native 4K with 40 fps is not bad at all.
And people say Ps5 can't handle high fps on graphically demanding games... 60fps should always be an option this gen.
@Jimmer-jammer it has that mode. That’s exactly what “ Favour Resolution (High Frame Rate): 4K resolution at a locked 40fps (TV with HDMI 2.1 support needed ” is referring to.
Like many others I am thrilled to be able to give 40fps a try. I may end up going to 60 or 120, we will see how much of a graphical hit they take in comparison!
Other games: "I would never play anything under 60fps, that's literally the bare minimum these lazy devs need to do!!"
God of War: "omfg 40fps! Did you guys even know numbers go that high? This is beyond amazing!"
@Milktastrophe I generally think most people have a problem with not having the choice of 60fps. There are many people without 120hz displays to appreciate the 40fps options. I think it’s just a vocal minority who chat rubbish about “lazy devs” and so on.
40fps feels so much nicer than 30fps so I for one am very excited about that.
Ah yes and I'll go with the 40fps option as well I think. Unfortunatly my TV is HDMI 2.0 so it's only 1080p / 40fps @ 120hz, but in my experience the additional graphical effects absolutely make up for it (Ratchet, Miles Morales and Horizon all looked fantastic).
Edit: It seems that suddenly my TV supports 1440p now (it wasn't available after the respective PS5 firmware update...huh!), so this'll work a bit better now xD
@Reeneman If your TV has VRR then that should smooth over the kinks. TBH I think the 60fps mode will be ideal for this type of game - a slightly slower paced, cinematic adventure; I'll want that dynamic 4K!
@Ward_ting I don’t think it’s quite the same thing. My T.V doesn’t support HDMI 2.1, yet I can still run that mode in FW and RA, where it’s not a requirement. I’m a little confused about the wording to be honest.
@JB_Whiting oh yes!
60 fps with a lower res all the time. I can’t notice a huge difference on my 55“ LG E9 most of the time with the different resolutions.
40 fps as lowest is ok as well, plays much better than 30 fps.
Pretty sure my 18 month old tv is HDMI 2.0 at only 60 but since paid to get the 4k I'll probably stick w/ the 30fps. Does sound like a good game to mess around w/ settings, I keep forgetting to do that w/ Miles Morales, which really needs a setting to turn off the carpal tunnel inducing square button mashing. NOBODY WANTS TO DO THAT!!!
@Jimmer-jammer i think HDMI 2.1 is required for it to be 4K 40fps whereas I think Horizon and Ratchet gave you lower resolution options for the 40fps mode. That is a shame if GoW doesn’t have that mode and Ratchet and Horizon did.
@Ward_ting Okay, so I did a bit of reading…sounds like you’re right in that I’m locked to a lower resolution utilizing this mode with an HDMI 2.0 display. This article explains it pretty well. Thanks for helping me clear that up!
https://www.eurogamer.net/digitalfoundry-2021-why-ratchet-and-clank-rift-aparts-40fps-fidelity-mode-is-a-potential-game-changer
Goes to show two things to me with these new consoles.
How much messy around the developers need to do.
How not that powerful the consoles are.
Favour resolution that probably won’t be native 4K at 40fps. Not so much the amazing next generation as I think power to graphics display and fps is levelling out a bit.
Also this is a PS4 game so it probably held back the PS5 graphics assets wise as well.
@rjejr huh I haven't got round to Miles Morales yet, did it not give an option under Accessibility?
I'm not interested in Ragnarok, but this is the way to go: choice.

@Bunchesopuppies EXACTLY mate.
God of g.o.a.t. 🐐 👑. Thats cool.more options is always welcome.word up son
@theheadofabroom "did it not give an option under Accessibility?"
I don't know, I never thought to check, in my head "Accessibility" is for colorblind people. If I can turn off button mashing I'm going to go to all the sidequests I've bene blowing off b/c it's a stupid gameplay mechanic. Well ok not the "find the sound" ones, the tutorial was stupid enough.
That you for steering me there though, I'll let ya know. 👍
@Dezzy70
Native 4K is a waste of resources. Even on PC.
TAA is the way to go.
Also these consoles are not underpowered. They are far more competitive with current PC set-ups than the PS4 or Xbox One were with 2013 PC hardware.
Cost is a big factor. In 2013 you could build a gaming rig that took a dump on the 8th Gen consoles for a little over 750 bucks. Most of that was due to the CPU chosen for the Xbone and PS4; the low wattage Jaguar class designed for ultra books. The current consoles run fully specced Zen 2 CPUs that are high wattage desktop class CPUs.
Today, you’re going over 1300 bucks to do that same thing.
@OrtadragoonX
That’s a lot of bucks to make a PC equivalent
Perhaps I ask for to much.
@theheadofabroom Wow! Accessibility had so many options, for just about everything. Looking forward to trying them out later. Also changed Fidelity to Performance, but knowing me I won't even notice.😂 Thanks again. Maybe this will serve as a lesson to be more mindful gong forward. QTE, pshaw
4K at 40FPS let’s gooooo
Always choose 60fps when possible as prefer the smoothness an feels more responsive, 30fps takes a min for my eyes to adjust
40 FPS for me! I hope we can expect this option from all major releases from now on.
I've pre ordered for PS4 , no info on that version...?
@Jimmer-jammer
You could still switch to 1440p if your TV supports it, WQHD is not 4k but since most games aren't native 4k anyways you might won't even notice the difference. I really didn't with 1080p xD
@rjejr
First thing I always do is checking those options for disabling button mashing and use buttton holding instead. I think many games support this nowadays..
I think the 40fps mode is a blessing. Plague Tale looks amazing with it, and it still gives you the smooth sensation.
I think I will play GOW with that mode
It's quite amazing what a difference it makes going from 30fps to 40fps, so if they can give us 4k at 40fps on such a game I'll take it.
What is performance mode at 60fps? Is it 1080p? Or checkerboard 4k?
If it's checkerboard 4k I'd pick the 60fps. That technique works amazingly well.
@Eagly 🤮🤮🤮
@Bunchesopuppies 100% lol, i get that other consoles like Series S are making things tough, but that doesn't mean your PS5 version has to suffer... Screw over the Xbox editions and run 30 fps if need be, not us on PS where the console is 1000% capable of running at 60 plus
wowww... now this is looking after your fans.. 4 graphical options.. Thank you Santa Monica!
These 40 fps modes are great. I just upgraded my monitor and went on plague tale. That exactly 10 fps feels so much smoother.
@themightyant tbf very cheap monitors can use the 40 fps mode too
40 FPS mode, nice! It was fantastic in Ratchet and Clank and felt great to play, and is probably the best compromise if you want the best of both worlds (like me). Could barely tell a difference from 60 in a living room setting, so I loved it. If you have access to a HDMI 2.1 port, I highly recommend it.
Shows how underpowered the PS5 is can't do native 4K @ 60fps.
Can see a PS5 pro coming sooner rather than later to try and keep up with PC .
@palmab it's not underpowered, it costs 400 dollars. I picked the digital price btw because $100 more for the disc version has no effect on graphical output. So we are really talking about a $400 gaming device.
It's not easy pushing half a billion pixels per second at that price point, especially when the game is intense.
Why do people still compare what a $1000 dollar GRAPHICS CARD can do to a 400 dollar all in one ready to play console?
There's no better bang for buck than a PS5.
Nice. Keen to try 40fps @ 4k.
Digging these 40fps options
Never felt bad for having a hdmi 2.0 Tv until now
I'll definitely be choosing the Favour Performance (High Frame Rate) mode without a doubt!
Last year I smartly invested in a new 65 inch Samsung 4K TV, which ended up being free due to Amazon taking too long to deliver.
(the TV got delivered a few days after Amazon refunded me, but they never followed thru on charging me again)
It's a tradeoff I guess. The performance mode of Horizon Forbidden West is really good. Yes, if you take the side-by-side screenshots, then you'll see the difference between native and dynamic 4K. But in-game you don't. Not me at least. Not even when sitting less then 2 meters away from my 65" OLED tv.
For that reason I guess I'll probably opt for the performance mode in GoW: Ragnarok too. 60FPS is awesome.
@rjejr heh, as someone who's body is falling apart in myriad ways, accessibility options is my first port of call in any game - glad I could help!
When I bought my ps5 I do expect 60fps and 4k as Sony advertised, but instead if that we are 4k on 30fps, and 60fps on lowered resolution, thanks for the lies Sony!!!!
@Eagly damn are you commenting from way back in 2014? 🤣
@Andy22385 interesting, I wasn’t aware that was a thing. Are there really cheap monitors that do hdmi 2.1 + 4K and output at 40hz?
@themightyant the cheapest are the Electriq models which go as cheap as £299 and review pretty good for the price. Acer have been as low as £349. Obviously this is UK pricing so I don't know for other countries. But yeah all offer 4k/120 for the PS5
@NeonPizza Dude the 65 inch Samsung QD OLED is $2000 and that's the cheapest it's ever been.
I bought the 77 inch OLED CX from LG and it was the greatest investment in consumer technology I've ever made.
I noticed discussions about the brightness of OLEDs and I'm stuck wondering what they're talking about. I'm in an average lit room with two windows, one a big bay window. Brightness is at 50 and daytime viewing is fine.
When watching at night with Dolby Vision the screen can make me literally squint my eyes from the brightness.
1080p/60 needs to be the MINIMUM standard with every single ps5 release going forward. this should be mandated by sony in all honesty. anything else is gravy. nice to see a myriad of options availbale with first party offerings.
@theheadofabroom
@BrotherFilmriss Button mashing isn't too bad if it seems to serve a purpose, like Kratos arm wrestling someone where the devs want you to feel like you're exerting energy. But for opening a door or a chest, it doesn't add anything for me. So when Miles Morales needs to power up a generator, well L1 and square should suffice. I can why why they put i tin all of those "grab the car over your head" situations but those are just way to short, I can never get past half full even when I know they're coming. Guess accessibility options will become part of my routine as well. Maybe there's an "over 50" gaming forum I can use. 😂
@GreatAuk agree the PS5 and XBSX are great for the price just both cant really do 4K @ 60FPS at high/ultra graphics settings. Love my PS5 but wouldnt play multiplat games on it ill use my PC for them.
@Jimmer-jammer 40FPS is using 120Hz
Is it a turtle or a turd. 'll be running even faster than that if I meet that thing
Can it be adjusted in real time? Because if so, I'd definitely want to test each to see the change in graphical quality / resolution before deciding. I feel like I could do with 40FPS but I might prefer 60 to 120 if the drop in quality isn't so severe.
