You many not be aware, but legendary filmmaker and composer John Carpenter is a big fan of video games. As highlighted in a recent interview with AV Club, he's been spending his spare time playing all kinds of titles, like Fallout 76, Horizon Forbidden West, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. One game, however, has been giving him some trouble: The Last of Us: Part II.
Carpenter says he "got stuck" when he "couldn't get the generator started", leaving him feeling "frustrated". He wanted to keep playing, "but they wouldn't let me", he continues. It sounds like he's referring to the generator in the chapter Downtown, which requires fuel to get started. If you're reading, Mr. Carpenter, you're more than welcome to check out our extensive The Last of Us 2 guide!
As it so happens, Naughty Dog itself has come to the director's aid, pointing out the game's fantastic accessibility options to make certain tasks easier:
The interview is worth reading to see more of Carpenter's insights on the world of games. It turns out he really likes Jak & Daxter, too!

I know jew can do it, John.
That's all the hints you're getting for now.
I remember that part is a little tricky. I can’t recall if I ended up needing help from a guide for it but I do know I’ve played through much worse gaming puzzles before.
Stick with it Mr. Carpenter because the game is well worth the ride!
Oh that part was super annoying.
It's OK, John. I can't make it through "Ghosts of Mars" and believe me, I've tried.
I remember my buddy stopped in the beginning of Ninja Gaiden not because of the difficult combat but he couldn't get past the wall jumping up the walls part down. 😄
The thing I didn’t like about the open-area bits was that I was afraid I might miss something by progressing too far… should I go in that building/climb that barrier or will it lock me in, preventing me from exploring the rest of the area? Nothing more soul destroying than triggering a cutscene and realising you’ve missed a collectible 😫
Haha.john carpenter is a legend.keep. on playing dont give up.halloween.escape from new york.and my personal favorite they live is a 1988 classic movie.and other movies he make is cool.word up son
@LN78 Hahaha
@LN78
That was a real cheap shot there.
Omg should we laugh at his incompetence 🤣🤣🤣
Carpenter wants to direct a Dead Space film if rumours are true.
Holy Halloween, Batman! Didn't know that. That's awesome
@BritneyfR_ee Exactly what I dislike about linear games, you can't go back. I also struggle with those questions too, "will taking this left turn lead me to a cutscene and cut the whole area off because I want to explore every nook."
@LN78 Ghosts of Mars is Carpenter's most under appreciated IMO. It's no masterpiece, but it is a big dose of B-movie fun.
@LN78 I enjoyed Ghosts of Mars.
@Starkei first watch I was kinda disappointed with ghosts but it has grown on me over the years. Just watched jc's vampires (12th time) and that film rocks woods is so over the top its amazing.
@TheArt it’s worse when you take the less obvious path thinking there will be a collectible and it turns out that’s the path to progress the story. The struggle is real 😁
I wouldnt know, i play on very light and no puzzles.
I struggled to get through the last 5 hours too, that game draaaags.
lol i know the feeling. i couldn't stand abby as a playable character did not want to know about her. lot of hate for that character.
the voice actress did a fantastic job the only one before that was winn in star trek deep 7 years just hated that character 😂🤣 wont say anything for those who have not watched deep space nine or last of us 2. both highly recommended!
Isn't much hope for him if he's getting stuck in the puzzles in a Sony game. Also, why not just use a guide? Better than giving up.
They Live is ye's favourite
@TheArt Well it cant be that "linear" if you're missing stuff!! No pleasing some people you moan that the games are too linear then ND make areas that are more exploratory with multiple paths and then you moan you might miss something because youre not just constantly being funneled down a corridor??? Pick a side.
If Mr John Carpenter is giving up on your video game in boredom, the problem might be with your video game, not with Mr John Carpenter. I mean, no single human being has been plagiarised more in popular nerd culture than John Carpenter. Everyone from Hideo Kojima to James Cameron has ripped him off at some point. Maybe instead of sucking, he actually has a point? He might know something about combining action with storytelling? Something your groundbreaking fetch quest design might not be delivering?
I’m not really surprised by any of this. I gave up after the first one, which I found very repetitive and forced. I think their whole approach to gameplay and narrative is a dead end. Fetching gas cans to fill a generator? Ooof, that’s some weak sauce right there. I’d give that about 10 mins tops.
