You know, we probably should have seen this coming. A couple of weeks ago, Square Enix registered a trademark for 'Symbiogenesis', and the eyes of Parasite Eve fans immediately lit up. Symbiogenesis is a scientific term that plays an important role in the series' story — it's basically when two organisms combine to create a new organism.
As such, you can't exactly blame Parasite Eve fans for thinking that the franchise might be returning. After all, Square Enix is bringing a lot of older games back into the fold these days, as is the case with titles like Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition and Tactics Ogre: Reborn.
But no, 'Symbiogenesis', we're all supremely disappointed to learn, is the name of a new NFT collection from Square Enix. This is where we'd usually write "you couldn't make it up", but you absolutely could. The publisher has been banging on about NFTs and blockchain gaming for months now, so this shouldn't really be a surprise.
Still, Parasite Eve deserves so much better. Considered a PS1 classic by many, it still boasts a unique blend of fixed-camera horror and prominent RPG elements, like a command-based battle system. Its sequel, Parasite Eve II, isn't remembered quite as fondly, but it's intriguing in the same ways.

Ah ffs.
I saw the screenshot and my heart skipped a beat 🥲
Damm it Square-Enix!
Just download image from browser and tell them to eff off.
I prefer two over one 🤷🏽♂️.
I swear Square-Enix. I love you sometimes...but then sometimes I really loathe you. Why must you do this!? Supreme disappointment.
Funny thing is I have never played Parasite Eve! But how passionately fans talk about it made me actually really want it to come back in some capacity because it sounds really interesting and something I might be interested in. But instead...NFTs. 🤢🤮
I think we should urge all the major publishing houses (or whatever they are called online) to agree that there shall be no mention of any company having NFT products available, and for them all to just have a single constant article explaining the immorality and dangers to the gaming landscape of NFTs becoming mainstream.
Negative articles like this are the next best thing, but it is still giving exposure (in this case to Square).
This is when the hate side of my love-hate business relationship with Square Enix flairs up big time.
I get a feeling this is going to happen with more dormant IPs.
looong sigh
both games were quite unique and different in terms of combat and story, from similar games that time. action, adventure, horror, rpg, all in one.
@sawaoyamanaka me too. 2 was awesome.
Well it's not called Parasite Eve for funs. You'll get it at the "eve" of Square Enix' existence xD
No love for the 3rd birthday?
This would all go away if people voted with their wallets. It's offensive that companies continuously try to gouge fan loyalty in this way.
Its not a surprise as Square have been banging on about NFT's since the start of the year - so their CEO needs to be sent a clear message that fans do not support this. Otherwise expect the nonsense to infect our favourite game series
Let's just accept the fact that the Square Enix of old is simply gone. No more will they produce great titles like Tomb Raider and Deus Ex. No more will we get full JRPG releases like Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts II and Final Fantasy XII. They're gone, and they're not coming back. They have become too money hungry and greedy.
@McBurn Quite the McBurn lol. Seriously though, I hope this fails hard enough to make Squeenix cease making NFT's, but not enough to make the company go barkrupt.
@Recover20 It's sad that all the good games they release now are ports and remakes of old games and Bravely Default, Triangle Strategy, and Octopath Traveler doesn't count because all three series were heavily funded by Nintendo, even OT2 and TS which are multiplatform.
Give us Parasite Eve and stop fartin about with this nonsense.
nft's is like the fidgit spinner craze big one year the next nothing. they will soon realise a parasite Eve release will be worth it. all they need to do is emulate it on to the ps5.
@TowaHerschel7: I'm no fan of NFTs, but if it doesn't interfere with their output on singleplayer games I can just ignore that. All the more if it makes them enough money to be able to support or even amplify their current output of JRPGs. While Nintendofunded it's still Square Enix making these HD2D games which prooves to me they still got what it takes.
Even though we are not as dependent on them as before with Falcom knocking it out of the park and even Atlus still chugging along with their SMTs (:
And just as a sidenote I am quite happy Deus Ex will get another chance with embracer (and the same team). I really loved those games and want to now how it continues^^
@McBurn It's just a waste of budget didnt the NFT bubble totally burst already?
For me Square Enix is just as clueless as Konami with Pachinko or Activision Blizzard with the don't you have phones remarks and don't forget the letter making fun of people who plays games to unwind.
Its so stupid that they do this everytime and it shows that a lot of suits are totally clueless.
This will fail like all other NFT s#it before it. Nobody wants that garbage.
@Flaming_Kaiser: Yeah, but it's not like it hurts ME or anything so as I said, I can just ignore those stupid decisions as long as it doesn't interfere with their output.
Everyone makes mistakes (some on a constant basis) but either they'll have success with it which would be great for them I guess, or they'll fail and learn from it. I don't have any stake in it either way so why get upset about it?
@sawaoyamanaka That is one hot take lol
Everyone still buying square enix games are just helping to continuously fund this s*** lol
