HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us will release on 15th January 2023, according to the company's HBO Max app in the USA. This lines up with an earlier suggestion from UK distributor Sky that the TV show will premiere a day later due to time zone differences. Officially, the series has been handed a 2023 release, but a "senior source" has told VGC the new date is legitimate.
It appeared in the description of a sneak peek video on the HBO Max app, reading: "A preview of the post-apocalyptic drama series based on the critically acclaimed video game. Premieres Jan. 15." Due to the way HBO distributes its TV shows, this would simply be the first episode of the show rather than the entire series all at once; it doesn't follow the Netflix model.
The official trailer debuted at the end of September proved incredibly popular, garnering over 13 million views in less than 24 hours. Another VGC source claims the release date reveal will take place at some point this week, so there may be more news to come in the next few days.
Other TV and movie projects PlayStation Productions has in the works include big-screen adaptations of Ghost of Tsushima and Gran Turismo, and then TV shows based on Horizon, God of War, Twisted Metal, and more. After the Uncharted movie brought in over $400 million, the company's next projects have some big boots to fill.

Cool, really interested in how this one turns out what with Druckmann’s involvement. I’m hoping that The Last of Us world is expanded upon quite a bit in this and ‘Factions 2’.
Oh yes, pretty much midwinter, exactly when a show like this is best. This makes me so much more excited than if it was released in April or June or something like that. Going to watch it by candlelight on an OLED, if the power is still on by then ha ha 😬
I'm looking forward to seeing this for the performances from the leads. Have no love whatsoever for the original game (found it to be boring), but the narrative seems decent enough to make for a good show.
Really excited for this. Hoping we get to learn more about the backstory of Joel
Expect this to be shown the same way that Westworld is shown.
2am on Monday morning.
Looking forward this. There are a bunch of shows I need to catch up on on HBO that I was waiting to finish. May wait for this one to end. Hopefully it's straight thru.
HBO is showing season 3 of His Dark Materials 2 eps per night the 4 Monday's in December, and splitting up Titans and Doom Patrol into 2 parts w/ a break in the middle. But I think the will be once a week.
I just started, and finished, "Left Behind" Saturday night. Still haven't played 2, may wait for after watching the show. I was going to replay 1 again but I think the show will be better w/o the game fresh in my memory.
@Kairu We have no idea tbh. They're purposefully keeping us in the dark story wise.
However that should all change once the release date is officially revealed by HBO Max on their Twitter or YouTube feeds.
(instead of a leak by whoever was maintaining that page)
@Kairu
If I remember correctly according to Druckman in an interview the first season will mostly cover the events of the first game but was vague on other details and usually when HBO is this hush hush about a show they have something up their sleeves.
@Kairu I have good faith in HBO either way, most of the shows they've produced I've loved alot.
@Kairu These are all of the shows they've personally produced/made.
Noteworthy shows include Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, The Wire, Sex and the City etc.
