A native PS5 version of the outstanding Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is releasing on 15th November, but according to developer Tribute Games, it’ll be “identical” to the existing PS4 release and “doesn’t include any additional features or content”. As such, there’ll be no free PS4 to PS5 upgrade option available.
We’re not entirely sure why the Canadian developer’s decided to do this, but it all seems to be related to a physical Limited Run Games release, which is available to pre-order in a variety of permutations. The standard option costs just $34.99, but the most expensive Radical Edition costs an eye-watering $199.99, and includes a whole slew of goodies, including a VHS-style case and a mini arcade cabinet.
If you’re in Europe, then you’ll be able to get a bog-standard physical copy from Merge Games for £34.99, or a Special Edition from Signature Games for £59.99. Of course, if you’re not interested in physical copies and already enjoyed this game via the PS4 version’s backwards compatibility, you can probably skip on this so-called new-gen upgrade – it’s effectively the same game.

What do they mean identical? Just different PS5 packaging?
This is confusing.
@ThaBEN PS5 version runs natively on PS5, but in terms of performance, functionality, gameplay, everything it's identical to the PS4 version running in backwards compatibility on PS5.
So whats the point to this? If its identical as in graphically etc then its a bit of a waste of time..very strange tbh..
Same trophy list as PS4? Same loading speeds? And I guess you can't play the native PS5 version from an external HDD as is the case with all native PS5 games. But this is possible with the PS4 version.
Something to take into consideration if the performance is exactly the same.
Anyone knows the size of this game?
They just want it to say PS5 on the box to help sell games.
I wonder if there’ll be less slow downs or hitches etc? I’ve not played the PS4 version so not sure if that’s an issue either way.
Great game (played it for free on Xbox Game pass) but have to say this does seem a pretty pointless release
@Member_the_game
I have to say that I didn't buy the physical version because the boxart says PS4. If I can find a PS5 physical version for a reasonable price, I might actually be tempted to buy that one.
I think physical collectors will actually enjoy this decision.
Kinda the story of this generation so far...
I already have the PS4 (LRG physical) and Switch (digital) versions so I'll pass on this one. Love the game though... and to answer AngelUs... there's no slowdown or hitches. Heck, there wasn't even any when playing 6 player on the Switch.
@Splat
Bingo. It works. I buy PS5 games for my PS5, not PS4 games. This is why Sony is doing remasters, too.
@ThaBEN
Yeah if I was looking to buy it and assuming the PS5 version was the same price I'd obviously go for that one.
I just don't get when they've decided to release this version if it's essentially the same product
Be nice if they fixed the whole not being able to do a mix of local and online co-op at the same time and the PlayStation version.
Ive been LOVING this game with my 5 year old. So much fun. First time she has really been able to pick up and play a console game.
As for this PS5 release, feels like a bit of a waste of time and resource
What an odd choice. At least a native PS4 version can run off an external HDD if the 1GB of space is absolutely crucial to save.
The only reason I can see why this is even an option is for collector "purity" to have a PS5 box on the shelf instead of a PS4 box. But since there is a physical version available, a digital option is also available.
I hope this was just a simple recompile for the developers and not some major effort.
@ThaBEN PS4 and ps5 trophy lists tend to be separate, at least in every example I've encountered. So the ps5 version may have its own trophy list.
Though it'd take a pretty dedicated turtle fan to buy it twice for that reason.
@Rob_230 Unfortunately DotEmu played similar tactics with the otherwise outstanding Lizardcube Wonderboy Dragons Trap remake getting a stealth ps5 release recently & apparently "nearly identical" but no crossbuy option/future upgrade for ps4 owners too.
Given Monsterboy & the Cursed Kingdom managed a free upgrade & apparently added 120hz support for compatible TV's etc.,its disappointing.
This is why I haven't bought the PS4 version. Was waiting for a PS5 physical release. Yea, I'm that guy that wants the PS5 text on the boxart, even though I have both systems.
At least they're honest!
I imagine part of the reason is when PS5 players browse PS5 games on the PS Store, they don't see this game. Adding a PS5 version will give it better visibility on the PS Store and help it sell better, which is good for the future in TMNT games.
I wouldn't be surprised if file size is smaller and load time is faster. It depends how strict the devs are when they say no upgrades or features. They may mean no gameplay or visual changes. Though if this is strictly for visibility on PS5 store no changes would be needed and file size wouldn't decrease.
These days you can't win lol. If they said they reduced file size for load time, and called it a feature, people would complain as if they are pretending this is some upgrade. Feels like they just gave internet crybabies the finger haha. Good for them!
@KleebanKliban um, a new/improved feature is literally an upgrade isn't it? 🤔
Not that I personally care, the improved load time thing is lost on me, maybe I'm just conditioned after a lifetime of load times, but they don't bother me at all.
@ThaBEN I believe it's less than 5 gigs it's not a big file size
Now that's lazy development!!
Maybe they are hoping for some double dipping from trophy hunters and people with more money than sense.
I might take advantage of this. If I get a PS5 and an SSD with more space like 2TB, I might put PS5 games and ports on the SSD and PS4 games on my HDD. I know putting PS4 games on the SSD makes loading faster, but I'm really patient.
Another reason to not get the PS5 version is if you want to play local co-op, everyone will have to use a PS5 controller. With the PS4 version, you can use PS4 and PS5 controllers.
@ThaBEN you didn't buy a game because of its box art? Christ
@ItsAlwaysSunnyyy
I prefer physical over digital. But when it's a smaller game, which is available digital for half the price of the physical version + it has packaging based on a different generation console as what I own then I indeed tend to skip the physical release it and buy it either digital, or when the PS5 physical version appears as is the case now. I just like to have all PS5 branded physical game cases when the option is there 😙
@Robocod I came here to say this is expected with how DOTEMU handled the PS5 Dragon's Trap game. I guess if Streets of Rage 4 comes to PS5, we'll know exactly what to expect.
Also, DOTEMU had nothing to do with Monster Boy.
@CRASH64 Oh yes,didn't add it in my original post but well aware Monsterboy was done by Game Atelier & different publisher in FDG.
Just seemed a bit surprising/ironic about Dotemu's approach to PS5 games effectively being unimproved over their ps4 versions. As others have speculated seems a cheap way to give them ps5 visibility,but if so a bit cheeky if there's no crossbuy & the only upgrade is effectively separate trophies.
Though I do recall hints on twitter from Game Atelier their Monsterboy update might’ve been related to the rumoured Switch Pro/2.0...(& obvs. delayed/under NDA if so),they quietly went about implementing it onto PS5/XB too which deserves credit where its due.
Like I said,loved Dragon's trap & indeed Streets of Rage,not Lizardcube's call...but its a bit odd Dotemu taking this route.
No outrage ah ofcourse I forgot not a Sony game.
Sounds like one of the most necessary PS5 upgrades so far. They probably should’ve made a “Complete Edition” and sold it instead. I’m excited to play the same exact game labeled as a PS5 game!!!!!!
Actually, game is different... You cannot play PS5 version from ext HDD .
That's something that should definitely be pressed on a 4k bluray Omg don't support this, guys...it's only a justification so that other "goodies" could be packed-in in an overpriced LRG release.
Hard pass if there are no improvements. Cheaper to buy the game digitally and play via backwards compatibility.
