A new trailer for HBO's TV adaptation of The Last of Us has been uploaded that finishes almost entirely new footage of the series, including iconic scenes from the first game. To the tune of Take On Me by a-ha, the story of Joel transporting Ellie across the USA as the cure to the Cordyceps infection is set up. Check out the trailer above.
Both Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker feature in the trailer, along with our first glimpses of many members of the cast that supports Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramey. The show debuts on HBO in the USA and Sky in the UK on 15th January 2023, with episodes rolled out on a weekly basis.

This looks genuinely incredible.
@LiamCroft Looks like the game, which they've sold to us 3 times before this.
@brazzios_84 So..? Isn't that a good thing? The TV show is based on the game.
@LiamCroft Yep, and I've experienced it before. Don't need another.
This is definitely looking very promising.
@brazzios_84 Thanks for sharing.
Trailer looks great, looking forward to this.
Excited for this!
Yep, looks really good!
Really looking forward to this now, that trailer was great, the only question i have now is do i wait till all episodes ar out and binge watch it over few days or watch new episode every week. Roll on january.
It does look great and very close to the game which could be a blessing or a curse depending on your point of view. Just a shame it's on Sky as I don't have it whilst Now TV is overpriced and has poor quality streaming, so I shall have to seek other means to watch it
I'm looking forward to this almost entirely because of Pedro Pascal and what he's going to bring to the project.
It'll certainly be an infinitely better experience than the game was for me.
@brazzios_84 exactly. Literally could just be another walking dead spinoff with what we saw there had we not already known the story. The casting choices for ellie and Joel just don't fit at all for me either.
It could be an OK watch but good God, howany times will they cash in on this damn story.
Damn this looks great!!!
Looks amazing!
It looks really good but I have a different perspective. I personally feel like we are past peak of "The Last Of Us" at this point; I feel like I've been saturated with too much of the same thing.
I think the remake of the game should have been released toward the end of the show's season.
@KundaliniRising333 Truth is I think it’ll reach a lot of viewer unfamiliar with the game and they’ll just enjoy the story for the first time. Not every video games spin-off has to be for gamers.
Genuinely excited for this. A strange sort of excitement one might feel as a boy who's mum is still holding the toy he wants , she gets to the checkout.
A little sick of general comments though. Gamers really do live in a bubble where they're the ruler, eh? You need to start realising this is for a whole different audience who haven't played the game or don't own a Playstation. I'm excited to introduce the series to a friend who otherwise knows nothing about the game.
Looks brilliant!
@TheIdleCritic well said👏🏻 I know a lot of people who don’t game, but they’re really looking forward to this. Shows like this opens the franchise too a massive amount of people
@TheIdleCritic
If this show is a hit I can see it opening the floodgates to a whole new audience of fans and that is never a bad thing.
I really liked this trailer but for as much as I love 80s music, Take on Me is one of the most overused songs of all time.
Last of Us is my most loved game so I'm not going to watch this but hope it's a good telling of the story for those non-gamers.
Help me out: who were Troy and Ashley in this trailer?
If the show is anything like the game I played Ellie is going to die 3 dozen times from that lone guy in the restaurant. Man I hated that scene.😝
Looking forward to it, may wait and binge in March.
looking forward to it.
honestly tho if you dont know tlou, then that trailer doesnt grab you. you would see it and think its the walking dead.
previous trailer was much better.
@Chibbie woman holding baby at 1:33 and posse dude on the left at 1:54
@Eldritch Are you not going to watch it because you don't want it to spoil your experience with the game?
For me to this day I never watched any of the Narnia movies because I didn't want them to ruin my imagination and the visuals my mind created while reading the books.
Looks fantastic and so close to the game, i will say Bella who is a great actress just doesn't feel like Ellie to me though but hopefully that changes when i watch it.
It looks great for those who don't play games. There are a few games I wish would get decent adaptations, not for my sake, but because I'd know my wife would watch and oftentimes enjoy it.
I'd rather just play the game. If i wanted to watch a show about an apocalyptic scenario involving zombies, walkers or whatever I've already got plenty of similar movies or shows available. I guess it'll be great for people with no interest in videogames. At least they get to experience the story without pressing pesky buttons.
Pedro and Bella don't even look like Joel and Ellie.
@WallyWest could say the same about the majority of the casting don't know why people keep pointing out she doesn't look like Ellie when none of the actors / actresses look anything like the characters from the game
@Would_you_kindly because people have to find something negative to say, even if it doesn't bear any consequence.
I think Ashley Johnson is Ellie’s Mum.
There looks to be a lot in this not in the game, which is exciting.
I’m still not sure about Ellie’s actress, but otherwise it looks ace!
@Snake_V5
The girl who's playing Joels real daughter doesn't look anything like him if ya know what i mean. Me thinks a quota was being met. 😉
@get2sammyb I haven't played the games, so our views will be different, but I loved Bella Ramsey in Game of Thrones, so I think she'll be fantastic
@Would_you_kindly I'm not bothered about the look differences and i supported her casting from the off its just she didn't give off a Ellie vibe in the trailer, Pedro looks nothing like Joel but he feels like Joel in the trailers.
@WallyWest I thought she gave the best performance from the trailer really conveyed Ellie's emotions
Looks like they got a lot of things right. It was cool to finally reveal a Bloater at the end of the trailer as well.
Really looking forward to this. One of the handful of streaming network shows I'll watch each week instead of after all of the episodes have dropped.
@GreatAuk That's exactly it. Same as you, I also have books that I hold dear and haven't watched the films when they've come out. And I certainly don't feel like I'm losing out as I haven't allowed my experience to be soured.
@brazzios_84 Personally I can't wait to experience the TV adaptation of one of the greatest games ever made.
Looks amazing! Can't wait!!!
@stvevan
Hard disagree even if you know nothing about the source material the trailer clearly establishes there is a lot more story and character at the heart of it than the Walking Dead ever had. 90 percent of the Walking Dead screentime I swear is just characters walking through a forest which is why I tapped out several years ago.
So excited to watch the TV show! Hoping they expand alot on the characters and universe.
HBO makes quality programming. I am confident that this show will please fans and newcomers alike. Broke down and purchased the remake as a Christmas gift for me and my son. We have both played it before, but it will be nice to revisit before the show starts.
It's gonna suck, just like that appalling Uncharted movie (my god that was atrocious!)
Colin Moriarty said it best: not sure why games are chasing Hollywood, gaming leaves Hollywood in the dust. They're the ones who need to catch up. All these unoriginal ideas certainly doesn't help the case.
Didn’t ‘The Walking Dead’ just end? Is this the Rick and Michonne spinoff??
🤣🤣🤣
@PegasusActual93 They have an excuse to use Take on Me in the trailer as it's the song Ellie plays to Dina on guitar in the record store when they first get to Seattle.
Surprised neither of you two mentioned it @get2sammyb @LiamCroft unless you think it's just a coincidence?🤷
@PegasusActual93
I remember people saying that about the AC movie and we know how that turned out.
@DETfaninATL
Rick's next thing is a trilogy of films.
@SolaceCreed perhaps due to the pandemic but the films were shelved in favor of the Rick/Michonne spinoff series.
As regards this series I was most worried about Pascal as Joel but honestly it's Ramsey that just doesn't work for me. That could change once I start watching but man is there an expectations to reality gulf at the moment.
Also don't understand the Sci-fi Channel lighting they got going on but that just seems to be the trend with more and more streamed shows these days. Not a fan. Doesn't need to be Ozark dark but holy moly I feel like I'm watching an episode of NCIS with these trailers.
"Sky exclusive"
yeah, good luck with that, Sky..
Wow! Looks fantastic. My wife won't watch me play through TLOU game, but she'd totally watch this.
@brazzios_84 ok so don't watch it when it's out problem solved
@WallyWest OMG hush
@Zombiechris OMG my post is nearly a week old i don't care.
@WallyWest I don't care if it was 50 years ago Julie
