Tired of video game adaptations yet? Put that disinterest on ice, because following on from Amazon’s God of War adaptation announcement yesterday, Kojima Productions has revealed it’s partnering with Hammerstone Studios to bring Death Stranding to the big screen. Hideo Kojima will executive produce alongside Barbarian’s Alex Lebovici, with the plot set to introduce new characters and elements within the series’ unique universe. It’s unclear whether the likes of Norman Reedus or Lea Seydoux will reprise their roles.
“We are thrilled and honoured to have the opportunity to partner with brilliant and iconic Hideo Kojima on his first film adaptation,” revealed Lebovici. “Unlike other big budget tentpole video game adaptations, this will be something far more intimate and grounded. Our goal is to redefine what a video game adaptation could be when you have creative and artistic freedom. This film will be an authentic ‘Hideo Kojima’ production.”
The plot is being kept under wraps, but the project is apparently being fast-tracked, and development is already underway. Interestingly, despite owning the Death Stranding intellectual property, it doesn’t look like PS Productions – the new cross-media umbrella within Sony, responsible for the likes of HBO’s The Last of Us – is involved at all. Either way, the adaptations are coming thick and fast – heck, the Japanese giant is currently shooting a Gran Turismo movie, too!

Yeah I’m done. I loved Death Stranding but it’s 95% movie already. They’ve lost the plot.
Shows how little creativity is left in Hollywood these days when they keep having to poach video game IPs.
I'm all for more content building on Death Stranding. Bring it on.
@Jey887 It's a simple cash cow. Fans are already there. What I really need to see though is these Hollywood wigs respect the source material.
His first adaptation? I thought the MGS movie was still happening, no?
"introduce new characters and elements within the series’ unique universe"
So it's not really an adaptation at all, but a new story set within the world. Will probably be canon too.
2 hour movie where the first 1:55 is delivering mail, can’t wait.
I really don't get why the comments of late have been so against gaming adaptions. Books and comics get adapted all the time, why should games be any different?
@TheKramer89 That's still in the conceptual phase after 10 years, and if Jordan is still attached as director, he's also working on a Gundam movie.
@AdamNovice I think the rate of announcements is a bit unprecedented, which may be why, but I agree with you. As long as they're at least decent I see no issue, and recent adaptations of games have been pretty solid compared to what they used to be.
This movie will be 5 hours long.
Nice, the first strand type movie
A boring and pretentious game that is essentially a movie gets a film adaptation. Nice.
@AdamNovice Because it's very difficult to actually think of any that have been any good. As a big Monster Hunter fan that garbage they produced last year is best forgotten.
This could turn out to be great. I hope it does, but history is very much stacked against it. The cynicism is warranted.
As much as I love the game, this seems a bit of a bad idea.
@AdamNovice I agree, I just think there's been a lot announced in a short period of time.
@rjejr TWO HOURS???? I expect it to be at least six…
Kojima is actually involved, so I’m immediately sold. Is this the first film to be in production from a video games first studio?
Can’t wait for Kojimaverse saturation!
@Jey887 It’s not Hollywood having a lack of ideas. It’s Hollywood enabling Kojima to continue building his Death Stranding franchise, a series with a bevy unique ideas, whether they are everyone’s taste or not. He’s long said he wants to branch out into film. Good for him that he gets to make one of his professional dreams come true.
@AdamNovice Because people are apparently under the false notion that they own a franchise and therefore no one should ever be allowed to touch their beloved franchise without asking every fan first.
Pretty ridiculous indeed.
👎 horrible.wtf.😴.come on son.word up son
I'll watch it if it stars Conan O'Brien.
In the not so distant future, every video game is based on a licensed property & every movie is based on a video game....
cue 80's apocalyptic synth music
@nessisonett Once I finished the game I did consider a mini series was plausible in the right hands (HBO/Denis Villeneuve perhaps) but I also agree this is unnecessary and game to TV/film productions are uniformly awful.... Please let the Last Of Us buck that trend!
@AdamNovice
Exactly book adaptations have been a thing in movies pretty much as long as movies have existed. Why only is it now with video game interpretations that people scream the usual "Hollywood has no original ideas" statement when there's a whopping like twelve types of stories you can actually tell? At least with games it's a giant untapped well.
@TJ81 I reckon The Last of Us will be pretty good, it’s got a decent crew behind it after all. It’s just not really my thing and again, the game’s quite cinematic already so a retelling feels a little pointless. I’d just like to see some originality in general. I’m not a snob or anything, I watch superhero movies as much as the next person, I just worry that scripts by promising talent are being passed over in favour of these sorts of adaptations.
@Jey887 Not really. There is plenty of creativity in Hollywood. The Problem is that most movies, unless they have superheroes or are from an established franchise, flop.
By and large, audiences/movie goers don't give new ideas a chance.
@AdamNovice Because hate bandwagons are hard to resist.
LOVING the Eurogamer subtitle for this article on this: Hideo killed the radio star.
Goldust. (Sorry people at push square - had to mention it)
Carrying packages around and using a crossbow to hunt and eat roadkill?
I wonder if the movie poster/title will say Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding (like Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio) or A Hideo Kojima Movie: Death Stranding.
On one hand, I'd probably enjoy this more than the game as the gameplay loop just wasn't for me after giving it a decent chance a few months ago. On the other, like somebody else said, it's already basically a movie. There's little need for this, and definitely something I'll be passing on at the moment. I can probably find the cinematics on YouTube.
I hope the film uses the games cast as it would stupid not to.
Creative freedom has done a disservice to Kojimas games. Not saying it's better when higher ups micromanage a game/movie but more often than not things flourish if there are tighter creative/budgetary constraints, because it forces the creators to find creative solutions.
Kojima clearly needs to work tightly with an editor to get things into a 2 hour timeframe.
Funny, that's what I was thinking while playing DS. It would make a great film. As for the game, I wanted to like it and tried for circa 25 hours, but gave up. The plot and presentation are great, but the gameplay loop is mindnumbingly tedious.
Why Hideo? Just let the game be what it is, why are all these game inspired movies a thing? just super suspect.. it just is soo sad....
Since Arcane and Cyberpunk have been some of the best adaptations, game or otherwise, I'm open to this!
Just depends how it's handled. Mostly it doesn't have to follow the same story as the game. Honestly it'd be a lot more interesting that way.
I'll probably have an easier time watching the movie over playing the game! Though I still plan to give the game another try eventually.
