Horizon Forbidden West has been named the UK's fourth best-selling physical game of 2022, beating out competition from LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, God of War Ragnarok, and Elden Ring to land in the top 10. The UK's best-selling physical titles of the year are as follows:
- FIFA 23
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
- Pokemon Legends: Arceus
- Horizon Forbidden West
- Pokemon Scarlet & Violet
- Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- God of War Ragnarok
- Nintendo Switch Sports
- Elden Ring
Of course, many of the games that made the top 10 have only been available for a few months, meaning had they spent the same amount of time on shelves as Horizon Forbidden West, the Guerrilla Games title may not have charted so highly. However, it's interesting to note how Elden Ring only just managed to scrape into the top 10 despite launching one week after Horizon Forbidden West and having a lot more excitement backing it.
It's important to reiterate this particular top 10 only covers the best-selling games distributed by physical means, as a GamesIndustry.biz report notes how 72 per cent of the world now buys its games digitally. As such, a ranked list based on titles bought off the PS Store and other built-in console shops could look completely different. Still, this will be welcome news for Sony as the PS5, PS4 exclusive has continued to sell since its release in February. Burning Shores, a Horizon Forbidden West expansion, arrives in April 2023.

"Elden Mid destroyed Horizon Forgotten West " community looking pretty stupid rn. Great news for Horizon though, the game deserves it's fair share of success.
Wow, I expected it to sell a lot but not to beat giant multiplatform games like elden ring (18 million units sold). Be interesting to see its total sales so far.
In before “if people weren’t forced into buying a PS5 packaged with the game… “ comments. Whatever way you cut it, that’s an impressive indicator on total sales.
@LiamCroft One minor correction. The 72% digital stat is GLOBAL not just UK but it's also worth bearing in mind this is just an extrapolated estimate from industry analysts Newzoo not hard factual numbers.
I've said this before, and I'll say it again: there are worse things to be forced into, than buying an awesome game.
Hopefully, this keeps the franchise going as I for one love it.
I think it goes to show sometimes that the internet is not fully representative of real life. I remember some commentators were dismissing HFW as having been swallowed up by ER. But that didn't really seem to be the case, this game seems to have legs in the charts.
Mario Kart 8. Not bad for a 10 year old game.
@mollock Horizon is also the 7th/8th best selling game of the year in the US as well, where physical and digital sales are also included. Guess the game did end up selling pretty well after all.
The interesting thing is that GoW:Ragnarok outsold H:FW in the USA already according to the November NPD, so there is a big Atlantic divide there.
Horizon:FW is probably around 7-8M worldwide sales, and with very strong legs so probably 20M eventually like the first one.
Still looking forward to playing this, but with the DLC announcement, waiting until the PS5 is cheaper to buy with a complete edition. Good to hear it doing well though, first was pretty good; also, Faro is a ****.
Physical games are so outdated, so are their charts
@UltimateOtaku91 I was thinking the same thing; it's especially impressive given the crazy accolades AND the fact that Elden Ring is multiplatform.
@PlayStationGamer3919 I don't think so. The game included in the bundle is a download code, so wouldn't count as a physical sale.
@MasterChiefWiggum It's been confirmed those bundles do count towards the physical sales total, despite being a download code.
@themightyant Thanks, I've made that edit.
Easily the biggest disappointment of the year for me. One the most average, soulless games I've ever played. I keep trying to go back to finish it, but it's such a chore.
@Cikajovazmaj it was one of the most generic games I ever played with bland characters.
@Old-Red I just said more or less exactly that in a conversation down in the forums.
@Cikajovazmaj Me too mate, the best looking open game world ever made, combat that never got boring, side missions that actually meant something and characters you actually cared about. I forgave it its janky climbing when the rest of the package was so good.
No idea why haters hate, but they are entitled to their opinion.
@Titntin
Totally agree probably one of the best open world games I have ever played.
My PS5 GOTY just pipping GOWR.
@LiamCroft My apologies...that's weird, but I guess the game is being sold with hardware, which is physical, so that's the rationale. Thanks for clarifying!
And it's completely overrated. The constant nattering from Aloy, giving away the solutions to the already-basic environmental puzzles, and the utterly soulless dialogue and performances completely ruined an otherwise beautiful and reasonably fun gam, for me.
72% buy digital just shows how foolish people are today physical is always 5 to 15 quid cheaper! Maybe I'm not lazy?
I bought Horizon physically so I can sell it on. Elden Ring was a digital preorder, only the second I've ever made. Horizon is good, but it's a championship team to Fromsoft's Premier league.
@Mysticshadow That just simply isn’t true. New physical games might be about £5-10 below RRP due to retail competition but you can also buy PSN credit below face value. Shopto has credit at about 14% off and cdkey reseller websites sometimes have 20% off. 14% off £70 is still about £10.
For older games, digital discounting goes much deeper than what physical can ever really do because every digital sale is always profitable. The difference is digital games are only cheap during designated sales, whereas physical games price reduce permanently. You simply don’t buy older digital games unless they’re on sale.

Elden Ring had more excitement backing it...... are you for real?
Here is one funny thing. Due to PS5 stock problems in Bulgaria you are forced to buy 3 physical games as a bundle. So, I bought mine with 3 Horizons since it was just out and I did it like that so i can very fast sell 2 of them
I find it funny that people have to keep reminding us how well Horizon is doing. Says alot. I think it was very mid, so many better games came out this year.
Safe to say I won't be buying burning shores.
Before I check the comments I bet trickydicky* Is crying about ps5 console bundles 🤣
I bought both Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West this year, but I've only played Elden Ring, because I had to buy Forbidden West to get another PS5, but I wanted to buy Elden Ring to play. HFW's a game I would have bought anyway down the line, but the bundles have severely scewed this chart in its favour. Clever by Sony though, looks great for marketing/PR, and PS exclusives are usually worth it, using a bow to shoot dinobots is still quite a unique thing in games so I'm going to enjoy it eventually.
But 2022 was definitely the year of Elden Ring.
I'd also say 90% of my friend list basically just play online gaming, FIFA, cod etc, and they will just discard and sell anything like this in a bundle. So hopefully some people that actually wanted it managed to buy it a little cheaper from people like that, it's like reverse scalping then... so kudos to Sony for punishing online gamers who want a console and helping single player gamers get a game second hand-ish 😁
Also, way to go Sony for shooting yourselves in the foot with the bundles, by making an exclusive game look like it's actually properly competing with COD during the acquisition arguments 👍👍
@Kuromiano oh noes! How dare a game feature only dumb guys and smart women (plus others who don't count because reasons). The reverse has never happened in the history of movies/games. Better burn your entire collection of Guerilla games just to be on the safe side.
@mollock actually saying that it destroyed Horizon is most certainly fat-fetched. Had it been a game that sold like 4,000 copies after the release of Elden Ring, then it would be accurate.
When it came a week be4 that elden thing, I thought it may loose. Got impressed by the sales now

After finally finding a PS5 (digital edition) a couple of months ago, I passed on Elden Ring and God of War due to the mature rating, but bought HFW during the online Black Friday sale. Waited a few weeks to finally start playing it (played Kena and Ratchet & Clank first). Now that I am well into HFW, I think that it is one of the best games that I have ever played. Not perfect (no game is a 10 IMO), but definitely agree a 9/10.
I still have this game in shrinkwrap since February...I really need to stop buying games I know I won't be playing for awhile.
Planning to finally dive into the sequel after I platinum God of War: Ragnarok though.
@jimbouk Damn you for beating me to it. No hate against Elden Ring and I love the game myself but honestly the entire narrative of Elden Ring making Horizon irrelevant is stupid, and it's clear which fanbase is more toxic.
Do people in 2022 know that in the year 3000, pink, blue and white means you're part of a Hades cult?
We probably won't learn til February of next year how many copies were sold, but if I had to guess; it had to have sold anywhere from 8-15 million copies, and I'm quite curious how well God of War Ragnarok will have sold by November of next year, selling 5.1 million copies in just one week is really impressive, especially considering that was just physical sales.
How DARE Sony bundle Horizon Forbidden West with a PS5! How DARE they give me a great game to go along with my brand new PS5! Have they no shame!!!
Sound like some dumbsh@t a Karen would complain about, sadly there looks to be a few Karens in this very comment section.
Seriously why does it even matter whether HFW sales can be attributed to it being bundled with the PS5? Who even cares if that even is the case? And WHY does it even matter? Be thankful you got a game bundled with your PS5.
@JustPlainLoco I don't care if it was bundled, but it should matter if you are counting sales and comparing it to other games.
I haven't even played Elden Ring, but I did buy Horizon (separately) and finished the game, so I have no bias regarding this topic. I imagine that if Elden Ring was bundled with the PS5 it would have crushed other games more. So if we are to rank sales figures, it most definitely matters if a game was bundled or not.
Pushsquare even reported a few months ago that half of Horizon sales were coming from the bundles. Since this is a ranking of physical copies sales it most definitely matters if it's bundled.
BTW it's not like the PS5 was still 500 when they bundled Horizon. It cost 550. So you got a small, little discount. It's not like they were giving it away for free.
@JustPlainLoco
HFW joins the likes of 'Wii Sports' & 'Tetris' as games that have heavily benefitted from being a bundle game. No shame in it, but it skews the numbers. It's unlikely that the game would have been in the charts every week, without the PS5 bundle sales.
I'm sure 'GoW Ragnarok' will become one of the top selling 2023 games, as it appears to be the new PS5 bundle. Obviously it has sold well on its own (PS4 version still seems to be constantly OOS on Amazon UK), but like HFW it will probably remain in the charts for many months due to the bundle.
I am shocked that people still buy fifa every year.
@ChrisDeku No resale value so you are always paying to much. 😉
@Flaming_Kaiser ok, but I’ve never sold a game in my life
@ChrisDeku I haven't sold games since the Genesis days.
My friend says, "I know a guy at a store who buys games." He said, "give me all the games you finished and I'll give you the cash." I gave him like 10 games and he comes back with a 20.
Never sold another game again.
@GuttyYZ sometimes lol...that's most times tbh which is why I chuckled at him saying elden ring had more excitement.
@Old-Red tell me you didn't play horizon without telling me you didn't play horizon. unless you have the attention span of a squirrel I don't see anybody saying what you just did.
@GuyProsciutto underrated. there fixed it for you
@TrickyDicky99 and you felt the need to tell us that why? lol I sense a huge amount of insecurity.
@Cloud39472 more like you're butthurt people talk alot about a game you don't like but felt the need to comment on an article about it haha. you haters crack me up bro
@middyone and yet here you are, replying to everyone who said anything negative, defending it like you're the games white Knight. Someone's a little insecure
first of all...I didn't reply to everyone who said something negative. secondly...learn how to make actual cohesive sentences if you gonna try to do a sick burn on somebody. for that reason this is was a just sad attempt. thirdly you will never ever catch me wasting my time clicking on an article about a game I don't like, reading it, then proceeds to trash it. like this game obviously lives in your mind rent free and that's just sad bro.
@ChrisDeku I don't know if your digital only then its not that weird. I sold some games. Especially things like Far Cry a lot of Ubisoft games.
@middyone the wall outside my neighbour's house is lower than three feet tall.
@DaveSimonH - But again I ask; why does it matter? Games being bundled with consoles/systems is nothing new. Not to mention; Horizon Zero Dawn sold 10 million copies in just one year, and it was never bundled with the PS4 until 2 years after it was released when sales had peaked, and when HZD was bundled with the PS4, it was bundled alongside God of War & Spider-Man or one of those two games and one Third-Party title.
So whether or not Horizon Forbidden West was bundled with the PS5 or not, it was always going to do big numbers just as the first game did, and a lot of people who wanted a PS5 likely already wanted to play Horizon Forbidden West anyway, so bundling the PS5 with Horizon Forbidden West was a good move, and those who did not want HFW can simply sell the game, trade it in or give it to a friend, crisis averted.
Not to mention; the PS5 with HFW Bundles were still in limited supply, it likely bumped up sales by maybe 3-5 million copies, but again; does it really matter? Because so far I've yet to see a single legitimate reason why HFW or ANY game for that matter being bundled with a new console/system is a bad thing.
@middyone You replied to enough people to make it clear that you get upset when people don't agree with your opinion on a video game. "if you gonna try to do" "this is was a just sad attempt" you're so much more cohesive than me aren't you?
I never said I didn't like it, it was average. It's clear to me from your comment history that you care way too much about what people think and feel the need to defend this game for whatever reason. Seek help.
Edit: Ahh I see, you're hurt that Elden Ring won GOTY and Horizon didn't win squat. Your comment history hasn't aged very well 🤣
Great sales for Horizion.
For a game that’s often been slated as mechanically bland (at least when compared to ER), consumers in the UK really seemed to gravitate towards FW for some reason even as more perceived exceptional games popped up this year. In the states it’s a bit of different story with ER appearing higher on the chart there.
@middyone did you choose the name "middy one" because the games you like are mid?
@Old-Red I don't remember caring
@Cloud39472 I really don't care bro lol. I'm actually laughing at how you nerds infiltrated a post about a game you don't even like...you would never catch me on a elden ring article...this is pathetic and there's nothing you can say that will change my mind. vocal minorities never get a rise out of me. way more cohesive try again 🤣.
again you will never see me on a article about a video game I didn't like trashing it like do you have a life? i'm genuinely curious. I'm still playing horizon forbidden west and enjoying the hell out of it so obviously I don't care what the vocal minority say. the irony you're telling me to seek help haha.
edit: if I cared about what critics think...I would had bought last of us part 2 like you poor souls. enjoy looking through my comment history...couldn't be bothered to even remotely care about yours
@GuyProsciutto such a sick burn kiddo lol.
@middyone i agree.
@middyone You obviously do care since you're still here and can't help but reply. Again, I never said I didnt like it. I think you're equally pathetic going on to every article and picking fights with anyone who doesn't agree with you. If "vocal minorities" don't bother you then why do you get butthurt so much when they say anything remotely negative about something you like? Again... Seek help.
Stop saying I didn't like it, I said it was average, you clearly have issues. Haha who are you trying to convince by repeating yourself? Me or yourself? You're in such denial when you say this doesn't bother you.
If you don't care then don't reply, I bet you will though because you can't help yourself. Have fun with Horizon.
so i care because i'm responding to a hate post on a game I actually really like? are you really this dense?
"I find it funny that people have to keep reminding us how well Horizon is doing. Says alot. I think it was very mid, so many better games came out this year. Safe to say I won't be buying burning shores."
NeVeR sAiD i DiDn'T lIkE iT. uh huh sure pal...obviously you very much liked it lol.
at least you know you're pathetic lol. the same reason anybody laughs and comments to somebody who just comes to a post about a game they don't like just to hate like that's gonna change anything. the irony of you telling me to seek help haha.
average means you didn't like it mid boy. I'm just enjoying the clown show that is you. why would a post from an internet troll bother me...I forgot you existed as soon as I wrote that and went back to playing horizon. nah I think I will reply to teach kids a lesson that just because your a keyboard warrior doesn't mean you're cool. I will
