PS5’s performance in Japan was meme-worthy for a good while, but fresh from claiming it’s resolved the system’s stock issues, the console is on fire of late. To clarify: it’s still a million miles away from the substantially more successful Nintendo Switch – that’s not even up for discussion. But it’s doing a helluva lot better, which is worth pointing out.
For the period spanning 12th December through 18th December, the PlayStation maker sold over 70,000 new-gen consoles to consumers, which is a very respectable number. To put it into perspective, Nintendo shifted over 170,000 Switch systems, so Sony’s still a long way behind – but this is not the complete butt-stomping we’ve become accustomed to.
There are signs that software sales are improving, too. For example, the big new release of the week, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion, sold best on PS5, with 54,522 units. In fact, all three versions of the game did well: the PS4 edition sold 53,481 units and the Switch port managed 48,527 units – a pretty good result for Square Enix, we reckon.
Sony recently promised that it had resolved PS5’s stock issues, and said that it would increase supply to its native Japan. That’s certainly being reflected in the numbers, and it’s nice to see the platform holder enjoying a little more success in its domestic territory of late. Let’s hope it can maintain these numbers moving forwards.

Persona 5 Switch dropped off the charts fast. Lol!
@NintenGuy Persona 5 PS5 also dropped of the charts like a hit rock.
Maybe Japan is fed up of Persona 5 after it's third rerelease.
@Haruki_NLI Considering all the port begging for years and years. It's hilarious seeing the Switch version tank off the charts. The PS5 version is a non factor. Fans were not going to upgrade for full price. Don't know why you even brought it up.
It's actually kind of funny that the PS5 console sales are very close to the combined sales of PS5 games that actually made the Top 30 software sales.
Still, that Switch is killing it in Japan for software. Looks like the hardware side is slowing down, though.
I knew the PS4 version of Crisis Core would outsell the Switch version, but even the PS5 version? That's crazy when PS5 software sales have been non-existent. I guess Jim Ryan wasn't lying when he said they had sorted stock issues out for the console. I remember people calling him a liar after he said that. 70K has to be the highest in a long time. Not a bad week for PlayStation in Japan I suppose but I wouldn't be shocked if it we see a big dip in a week, it never seems to last long. Hopefully Sony will be able to keep meeting demand and we see steady PS5 sales onwards, as well as more games in the software charts. I imagine they will be trying to get as many units there as possible ready for FF16
How is the switch still selling 100k+ in Japan? Surely everyone and their dog has one now.
@Haruki_NLI - Not surprised very few people ran out to buy Persona 5 Royal on PS5, I'm currently playing it and a bit of Judgement right now, and I don't see much if any improvement, I've heard it runs best on PS5, but having played Persona 5 Royal on PS4 a year ago and now playing it on PS5, I'm not noticing a difference, supposedly the PS4 version runs at 30fps & the PS5 version is 60fps, but I'm not noticing any difference.
So yeah there really isn't much of a reason to buy Persona 5 Royal, unless you're someone like me who buys most games and sometimes multiple times, like I did for Persona 5 Royal on PS4, PS5 & Switch, or Ni No Kuni, Dragon Quest 11 S & Cuphead on PS4 & Switch.
Those are some very impressive week 1 sales for Crisis Core. It very much deserves it.
It'll be years before PS5 numbers overtake Switch numbers, but those sales are genuinely impressive for the region.
On the other hand, Microsoft can't even clear 1000 units sold across both models, lol.
@NintenGuy I mean...
1) Most of the people demanding ports of the game weren't Japanese
2) Full-priced re-releases rarely sell well in Japan to begin with
3) Most third-party software sales for Switch come from Western territories
You might as well look at the list and conclude that God of War Ragnarok was a flop.
70k against 170k may seem like a large difference but, taking into account the difference in price, it’s not too bad a showing. I suspect PSVR2 being on the horizon may provide a slight bump in sales too. Something that isn’t possible in Switch just by downgrading performance and graphics.
Thats cool.more ps5 more better in Japan.word up son
Good to see Xbox doing so well! 😅 Joking aside, any Japanese developer that allows themselves to get purchased by Microsoft as the rumours persist about would have a drastic drop in sales in their homeland going by those figures.
That top 30 is a sad sight to see. And people wonder why companies like SE claim Japan is a dying market and are focusing on the western market. Altho those people are usually ninty fans lol
@Ralizah Persona is huge in Japan. So is the Switch. God of war & the PS5 are not. Seeing Ragnarok drop isn't a suprise. The persona port beggers were everywhere Japan included. Funny that Mincraft, Mario Kart 8, Fifa Legacy, and One piece Pirate warriors. All full prices re releases are on the best sellers list. 🤣
Whatever eases your mind though.
@Ralizah Xbox never does well in Japan, and it truthfully doesn’t need to. Nintendo rules Japan and Sony eat’s the leftovers, MS is the crumb’s. The Switch is so Japan that if Nintendo changes their console strategy going forward it could be costly to them in Japan, the Hybrid system just sings there. If Sony has closed Japan studios down and catered to the US markets and can afford to do so, i am pretty sure a $2 trillion dollar company is ok with being the crumbs in that market.
Finally, some decent numbers for Ps5.
@GeneticMutation 1. different models, 2. some lost/stolen/broken, so need to be replaced, 3. more children get old enough to own one, etc. It may keep on selling forever and ever. People just want what everyone else is having.
@NintenGuy Your post was just an easily defeated attempt at getting a dig in. Plenty of games sell well on Switch worldwide, but not necessarily in Japan. That includes Persona 5 Royal.
As for your examples? Minecraft will always be popular on popular devices. MK8D doesn't count, since barely anyone bought a Wii U. And if I'm not mistaken, Pirate Warriors 4 was a multiplatform release.
IN GENERAL, the industry trend in Japan is for ports of recent releases to not sell terribly well. Multiplatform launches tend to hold up well, but games released months or years after the fact? Unless it's Monster Hunter or something, it won't stay in the charts for long. We've seen this numerous times with many games. For example, Ys VIII sold well on Switch in the West, but barely made a ripple when that same version was re-released in the Japanese market.
And, by and large, the #breakfreepersona stuff was primarily peddled by Western twitter accounts. Nobody who keeps track of industry trends expected the Switch port to sell really well in Japan. They expected it to sell well in the United States. Which seems to have happened, despite the game being given away on Xbox/PC Game Pass.
@Green-Bandit I think Microsoft gave up on any serious attempts to penetrate the Japanese market years back with the 360, when it made a huge push to increase their market share in the region, and largely encountered resistance from Japanese gamers.
@Ralizah whatever eases your mind dude. Considering P5 on all platforms combined was only 15th on the US charts in November after dropping price to $30 less than a month after launch and it never charted in the UK, doesn't bode well for your "theory". Don't know why you're making excuses. Still funny to me the Switch version of Persona 5 sales fell of a cliff so fast in Japan. You just have to accept that 😆
35 XSX sold. A door-to-door salesman would have fared better.
"clarify: it’s still a million miles away from the substantially more successful Nintendo Switch"
why is the switch still included? that console came out in March 2017 and the ps5 in November 2020. Saves 3.5 years.
Wait wasn't sonys anti consumer practices of having $70 games and raising console prices supposed to hurt them ? What happened lol
Switch really ownes the land of the rising sun.
They'll need to keep the supply up for Japan in order for FF XVI to do good numbers, or else they'll piss off Square Enix. And I don't think they'll wanna piss off SQEN, their top third party partner atm.
Those Xbox numbers look appropriate.
@Sam_ATLUS The crisis core figures are very interesting, especially considering that switch owners are more likely to buy physical games.
@Ralizah i agree, MS would like a decent number in Japan, but isn’t going to sleep bad at night until that day does or doesn’t happen. Sony is going to have a fight with MS in america for gens to come. MS isn’t giving up that market. Gamepass will be huge thorn in Sony’s side in the states. PS + is average at best at the moment. But Sony still has the name and great exclusives. Things are going to heat up in 2023, as a Series X and PS5 owner, i am here for it. The more they slug it out the more i enjoy both consoles. 😊
@Art_Vandelay Japan isn’t ever going to let MS in, all the more reason they aren’t a monopoly after the ABK deal. They will just even up the playing field in America. But Japan is so small market share wise it don’t matter much. Nintendo eat’s up Japan with 26FPS games. Japan has given up their card as a cutting edge section of the world to the gaming industry and that is ok. If Sony could afford to close their Japan studios down a $2 trillion dollar company isn’t losing sleep over Japan sales.
@Green-Bandit I just don't understand why Sony is so desperate to remain the leader in every market there is. They are doing far better than Xbox overall, if they were competing with Xbox in a few markets that won't hurt them that much. PlayStation has an advantage that Xbox will never have which is the brand name.
Boost in sales around the same time as a FF7 spin off game is released?
Think we'll be seeing a similar article when FF16 comes out.
@SamMR i agree that the name of PlayStation is like Nike or Coca Cola, they and Nintendo both have a stronger brand name than Xbox. But if MS can take back North America and do well on PC as well then all 3 have their marketshare and will be successful. As an owner and fan of all 3, that makes me happy. I want to see them compete and earn our money and time. I think the moves MS are making are showing they are here to stay in the gaming industry and we know Sony and Nintendo aren’t going no where. So the Big 3 are in a great spot and so are us gamers 😊
The situation in Japan is still one of demand outstripping supply. However many units Sony are able to supply, they’ll sell.
@GeneticMutation Christmas! Lots of parents are buying their kids a Switch for the first time this year as they get old enough.
Happy for PS5 in Japan, looking forward to the day it outsells the Switch!
@KidBoruto It won't. The Switch outsold the PS4 after 18 months on the market.
More than 5 years after launch, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still in the top 10. The original Mario Kart 8 was released in 2014 ! Are Switch-owners terrified of a potential Mario Kart 9?
nice, will PS5 finaly dominate japan and destroy Nintendo Switch e Xbox Series X/S.
@SamMR Sony don't have the financial muscle Microsoft got. Doesn't got Windows. Microsoft can afford to lose millions every year Sony need to be profitable. Microsoft is spending an insane amount of money that threatens PS profit model.. Sony's market share fell near 40% in 2022 (mainly not cause of Playstation)
@Doublecell I know right! Another example that the loud online minority means nothing. Lol!
