Relentlessly-anime JRPG The Caligula Effect: Overdose is getting a native PS5 version in 2023, publisher NIS America has revealed. Overdose is a remake of the original Caligula Effect, which smoothed away many of that game's rougher edges.
Featuring a story penned by Tadashi Satomi, scenario writer on Persona and Persona 2, and a similar school-based setting (with power derived from the friends you make) The Caligula Effect: Overdose might just fill the Persona-shaped hole in your heart, at least for a little while.
Did you play The Caligula Effect on Vita, or Overdose on PS4? If so, what do you think of the series? Let us know in the comments section below.

My question is: is this a free PS5 upgrade for those who got the PS4 version? Or are they going the Persona route and making it a completely separate paid release with no upgrade path?
@dskatter From what the article says, it’s a remake not a remaster, so they’d be well within their rights to charge accordingly.
@Arnna the PS4 version was the remake, this is a PS5 enhanced version (that they will likely still charge everyone for).
@dskatter It’s published by NIS, so the chances of a free upgrade are slim to none. That being said, I enjoyed the PS4 version, though you can definitely tell that it’s built on the bones of a Vita game. Lots of interesting ideas and a unique, pre-visualization approach to battles, but I don’t think it all completely comes together. Worth a look for JRPG fans though.
@dskatter this will be similar to what they did with the two YS games which got ps5 versions, and there was no upgrade path for those.
I actually just got the platinum for the PS4 version today. It's available on the subscription so I figured why not? It was rough getting into at first but the game gets better once the characters start getting fleshed out. Oh and the soundtrack is excellent.
I'll pick this up in the future when it's on sale for dirt cheap, or free with PS Plus.
