It’s taken a long time, but PS5 is finally doing well in Japan. The system, capped for so long by poor availability, has been gradually getting a foothold in its native territory – and while the Nintendo Switch still very much reigns supreme, it’s finally overtaken the hybrid this week. Sony managed to sell 62,908 units for the week ending 29th January, compared to Nintendo’s 51,108 units. It’s not a blowout, but it is evidence of the new-gen console’s renewed availability.

One area where the PS5’s not doing so well is software, and once again this week is dominated by Switch releases, save for a single game: Forspoken. The Square Enix console exclusive didn’t do well, selling just 29,055 units – although it should be noted that Famitsu’s data only takes into account physical releases.

Sony will be hoping that PS5’s software sales see a gradual improvement now the hardware is getting into more hands. Some Japanese retailers announced recently that they’re discontinuing lotteries for PlayStation’s latest platform, meaning consumers will be able to buy the console directly when it’s in stock. Meanwhile, the platform holder recently increased its shipment estimates for the current quarter, suggesting stock is going to be readily available through February and March.
