Since the PS5 launched in late 2020, it's been pretty difficult to actually get your hands on one. With various issues contributing to a PS5 stock shortage, fans eager to play Sony's newest console have been struggling to find the machine for the first couple of years. Demand has been much higher than supply all this time, but it looks like the platform holder is turning things around in 2023.
Writing on the PS Blog, PlayStation's Isabelle Tomatis assures that the console's elusive days are over. "To all our fans: thank you for your patience as we navigated unprecedented demand for the PS5 console amid global challenges," she says. "If you’re looking to purchase a PS5 console, you should now have a much easier time finding one at retailers globally."
Tomatis recommends you check PlayStation's official online store, but also says third party retailers will have PS5 consoles and accessories available.
This stock refresh comes alongside a new TV spot called Live from PS5. Presented like a news broadcast, the live-action promo showcases various games either out now or coming soon to the console. It looks like this will be a big new marketing push for the hardware as the stock situation begins to resolve.
Have you managed to get a PS5 yet? What do you think of the new ad? Tell us in the comments section below.

What I want is to stop the forced bundles with games that you may have or don't want and other useless stuff like controller charges. I have a console that I got close to the release and it is the first time I got something at release and actually ended up saving money!
Maybe now they can start looking at lowering the price? Darn thing is more expensive now than it was at launch. I would ideally like one for the new Yakuza games, but if need be, will just play on PS4 instead.
@MS7000
Dream on, pal.
You think they managed to fix the supply without incurring extra cost?
There won't be a price drop any time soon.
I was able to find one with zero issues for my sons birthday end of last month. It was great to just walk into the store and pick one up with no problems!
In the UK you can now buy the Disc edition on its own from Amazon for next day delivery. The digital edition is still MIA though, although Argos had digital GoW pack-in bundle available, which I’d never even seen before.
We’re getting pretty close to every SKU being released being readily available at any given point in time here. I think some European countries are still a bit behind though.
Other than ratchet there's still not a definite reason for me to get one tbh.
The PS4 still does everything I need it to. I have been utterly underwhelmed by the selection of PS5 games on offer so far. 500 notes is shocking value for money for what is a minor graphical improvement at best.
Anyone else remember seeing Metal Gear Solid 2 or GTA 3 for the first time? That is what a console leap should look like.
I have so many games on PS5 I love the console once you used the PS5 it's hard to go back to PS4 loading, graphics, controller, and the upgrades of older games are enough for me and its so quiet I love it.
I heard the rumour about PS5 Slim on this year so I get PS5 games first while keep building my money for PS5 Slim machine in the future.
Pre-ordered mine and I knew from previous experiences that later I got it, it would be harder, more expensive, and I would have the "newest" console for a shorter time (it does stay relevant only through its lifetime).
Long story short, if one can afford a console and plans on buying it, there is no better time than release. The second best would be now/immediately, whenever that might be.
What’s the game with the women holding the fire on a stick? People on Twitter saying it’s a hint at a new Uncharted, it looks like Ellie to me though!
Waited this long, will hold on for a few more months until the inevitable hardware refresh
@Atreus97 No, I don't expect the price to drop anytime soon. Can't have Sony on the breadline now. As I said, I can just play the games on PS4.
The supply will get even better once they do the hardware refresh and only have to make 1 console. Got to laugh at some people. The price of everything is going up but damit Sony give us a price cut!
@itshoggie I'm hoping it's a new Uncharted and the woman could be Drakes daughter. Can't see Ellie walking towards a treasure.
@LifeGirl Much as I enjoyed PS4, only somsone with zero experience of playing on one would suggest the PS5 is not a big improvement.
Good to hear. They should start doing PSVR2/PS5 bundles. People are currently concerned about the hassle of getting both, so to be able to order them together would be a good idea I think. Possibly even prioritise those getting a PSVR2 at the same time in case their are shortages.
@itshoggie That's a very good spot. The only current game I could think of was Uncharted Lost Legacy which got rereleased last year but it didn't look like Chloe. So that could be teasing a new game. It wouldn't be the first time. I remember Crash 4 got teased in PS4 AD so it's very possible.
Cool the easier it is the cheaper its going to be soon.i also saw that on ebay the ps5 price is already dropping fast.word up son
@LifeGirl
This was actually a massive leap in GPU and cpu power, but with diminishing returns for resolution and still no UE5, we haven’t seen much from it yet. Although the much reduced loading is a nice quality of life feature.
What PS5 does allow, which is absolutely revelatory, is PSVR2 though. An extra cost of course, but if the choice is owning two near identical consoles, or PS5 and PSVR2, the latter is clearly the way to go.
@Beeeee-AHH-eer This is my thinking as well. Actually just came straight to this comments section after seeing the spot on Twitter - to see if anyone else noticed. That has to be it.
I'll probably wait a year or so, and by then there should be a PS5 slim and the launch titles for PSVR2 will be on sale. Win-win.
@LifeGirl Fair enough if the PS4 suits your needs, but the jump in fidelity and frame rate is night and day, and i don't usually bother with that kind of stuff. My PS4 was loud, slow and ran cross gen games quite badly in comparison. The games will improve over time as well. Not sure about your situation but this sounds like sour grapes to me.
I thought it had been quite easy to buy them directly from Sony for a while? I got a tax return back in June and went on to the Sony Playstation site and but one with zero fuss. Maybe i was lucky? the reason i went straight there is because my friends had been saying there was usually stock now, and that was back then.
I don't see myself upgrading any time in the near future. There just aren't enough games I can't play on platforms I already own.
@MS7000 Price drops are designed to stimulate demand. As long as demand is far outstripping supply (as it likely still is), Sony has no incentive to drop the price of the console.
I got mine Thursday!
@Titntin it’s a big improvement, and i am someone that didn’t really care much for PS4, i mean i had one and a Pro and lots of games, but i never much cared for the Ui, Controller and loud fan noise. Jump to PS5 and i love it so much. It’s a true upgrade in just about every way for me. So much so i play it more than i thought i would when i bought it. Plus i have a Edge controller on order, picked up the H9 inzone Sony headset and might get PSVR2, so that is from a person that kind of just had and used a PS4 to loving my PS5. I give Sony big props this gen so far. Well minus i do think the console is to big, ugly and in need of a slim HAHA
Here is Texas i can buy a PS5 GOWR bundle in almost any store, say’s it ships to me in 2-3 days. So they are becoming more available. Which is a good thing, happy to see others be able to jump into the console and not need to pay over retail. The GOWR bundle is awesome, and it seems like the Digital is being phased out for the new slim model. Those are hard to find, but the Disk is easy now. I have the Digital PS5 and it was hard to find for me, but i got it about 4 months after launch.
For the first time ever, I saw a PS5 in my local Target. It was a Ragnarök bundle.
Got one in September and I’ve been loving it. Paired with my new 65 inch OLED, games looks spectacular! Great loading times and no fan noise are icing on the cake.
I was lucky enough to be a day one adopter but I do still regularly check stock levels out of curiosity.
I've noticed that since mid to late December Smyth's do seem to regularly have it available in stock.
That doesn't stop CEX trying to sell pre-owned models for almost £100 more than the RRP
I could kind of get it when they were impossible to find but if anything CEX should be selling them for less than RRP by now
@Ralizah No, I don't expect the price to drop anytime soon. Can't have Sony on the breadline now. As I said, I can just play the games on PS4.
I am aware of the concept of supply and demand. My original comment was a throw away; not meant to be a comment on cost-of-living and the cost of products in relation to or on market demand. I am aware it will not benefit Sony to drop the price; people will justify it somehow; people always do, and that is fine. Nonetheless, dropping the price is the next thing we can optimistically expect.
Once they're REALLY easily available and/or the Slim drops, I'll finally splurge on an SSD and open it up. Been waiting for true ability to replace rather than risk the off chance of breaking it while I can't replace it, and then be stuck without the machine to drive VR2.
But man it's going to suck shuffling games around on that tiny drive when VR2 drops.
@MS7000 I honestly don't expect price drops this gen. Considering they raised the price, and cost of business increased sharply since launch, and Sony's management's overall MO of leaving no penny on the table without doubling it for investor returns, unless PS5 sales start diving or Xbox sales start surging and eclipsing them, I don't see them dropping price. They seem, as Sammy noted in a different context in a different thread, to be going the Apple route where everything is set-price premium. I think they'll introduce production cost savings with the Slim, hold prices high (or higher once you add a disc drive), and pocket the difference for investor returns.
Price cut is probably after they announce PS6 and a Super Slim PS5.
Been very easy to get in the UK for a while now including the non bundled ones.
@belmont Plenty of retailers have offered that for a while now at least on the Physical Edition. Even Amazon has removed they request requirement and you can buy the console now for delivery tomorrow right now. Digital Edition is harder to track down at RRP.
@ChrisDeku Yes the Physical Edition has been available at Amazon at RRP £479 in the UK without the need to request it, for at least a week or two. Digital Edition has been MIA in all but a few bundles or sold at markup.
@NEStalgia Who knows at this point? Maybe there will be no price cut at all this gen. If so, I can't see myself getting one until the end of the generation or even at all if that is the case, but never say never I guess. Like I said though, I can wait.
@themightyant Where I live you can only find the God of War bundle with one other game and a controller and almost only online. I would buy a secondary PS5 if it still had 400€ but the price has increased for nonsense reasons.
@themightyant FWIW, it looks like in the US, Walmart and Best Buy are now shipping normally (disc GOW bundle only), Target no longer ships PS5 or XSXS at all, in-store only, which is just obnoxious. Gamestop is in-store only as well. Amazon is by invitation only, click for invite. PS Direct is "sign in to buy", I assume they have them but don't want to mess up my VR2 order profile
@NEStalgia @belmont Thanks. Seems it's still not so easy everywhere. This is the first time it's been available at Amazon UK directly, without invites, for more than a few days since launch.
I have a friend in the States who finally picked one up from a store the other day and said stock was there, but he didn't say if it was in-store only. I, incorrectly it seems, assumed both. (It's also likely regional)
Glad the stock issue has been sorted. Now just waiting for a slim version!
Great job Sony, sorting this for everyone after you've decided to port everything to PC and kill off your emphasis on first party singleplayer IP.
I don't understand why anyone's enthused about PS anymore. Also, no need to quote or reply, this is a fly-by from a lurker.
Wait for the redesign at this point.
I try and help my friends find PS5s whenever I can, will make the process alot easier on them now!
@LifeGirl Well, I had one for about a fortnight before sending it back to Sony!
In terms of performance it was a bit quicker to load than the PS4 Pro+SSD (but not by much) and a bit quieter but it wasn't the quantum leap I was expecting.
The user interface is a total mess, the games mostly ran about the same as on the Pro but with some nice fps updates for some PS4 games and a few PS5 (sort of) native version upgrades.
Personally, I'm waiting to see what the redesign looks like (please be smaller!) and I'm waiting for that must have title some over 2 years later.
