Bandai Namco and FromSoftware have just released the latest major patch for Elden Ring, the massively popular open world RPG. It brings the game up to version 1.09, and the update is available now on all platforms, of course including PS5 and PS4. The main headline addition here is the implementation of ray tracing for the current-gen version.
Yes, all those horrible wet caves and shiny surfaces can now be shown with much more realistic reflections. Following the update, you'll be able to toggle this option on in the settings. However, Bandai Namco warns that frame rate and resolution "may be impacted" while ray tracing is active. To what extent we don't know, but hopefully it doesn't drag down performance too much.
While ray tracing is the main event here, the patch is a big one, containing a multitude of balancing tweaks and bug fixes. We've popped the full patch notes below:

That's quite a patch! Still, it makes sense to get the game ship-shape as we await the arrival of the much-anticipated DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree. Will you be playing Elden Ring with ray tracing on PS5? Reflect on your thoughts in the comments section below.

The frame rate could be ropey without ray tracing..i'll try it but i doubt any respecting elden ringer will have it turned on all the time unless they hate their eye sight that much..
So rather than fix the framerate as it currently exists, they just slapped on a new feature that instead makes it worse.
Ain’t no way this is maintains 30fps with ray tracing
Times will come when PS5 Pro is here and we can finally play games without sacrificing something. Even to be able to choose modes is going on my nerves. I want 4K 60 with or without raytracing. Thats NextGen
Woo that took a while. Just as well am not near completed so as can check it out
Added Holy damage and Faith scaling to the Great Club.
Oh my god, FINALLY!
Time for beating to a pulp.
@ORO_ERICIUS This is poor optimization above anything else. From Soft has a track record with this. Even people with beast PC rigs struggled to keep the framerate at 60 when it released.
The frame rate might take a hit but I’m keen to give it a go with Ray Tracing nonetheless.
Makes me want to start a new character!!! I’ve finished it 5 times already but I doubt I’ve seen everything! Such an amazing game. BRING ON THE DLC. Fromsoft DLC is always epic!
Dark Souls 2 has my favourite DLC and is my fav FS game. Unpopular opinion but hey, that’s how I roll. But no fat-rolls 🤪
Removed - trolling/baiting
@Arnna not my favorite souls game, but i really did enjoy the DLC on there!
@dschons thats indeed a fact in this specific game thats true. Even Final Fantasy 16 will come with two modes...
@CRASH64 the dlc on ds2 was extremely well done and added dozens of hours of content
@CRASH64 what’s your favourite?
Such an epic list of adjustments. One thing I love about FROMSOFT is they support their games long after release with patches. Other developers could learn a few things here…
@Arnna Nothing what you said had anything to do with my post. It's one of my favorite games. "But you do you".
@dschons cool. Ok.
I love me some good ray-tracing. I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but I’ll often favor the RT over boosted frame rate. I think years of 30fps has lulled me into a tolerance of it. Of course I’d rather have both RT and 60 fps but it seems Insomniac is the only developer who’s done that consistently.
@Arnna I recently picked up DS2: Scholar of the First Sin on the cheap and am looking forward to it. My only FromSoft chops to this point are Demon’s Souls Remake, Dark Souls Remastered, and Bloodborne, but I loved them all. I had considered skipping DS2 as it seems quite polarizing amongst fans. Good to see someone praise it since I worry about it being a waste. I am leaning toward doing DS2 followed by DS3 before I culminate with ER. It’ll probably take me a couple years 😅
Ok, I just tried it in Stormveil castle and FYI this ray tracing option is glitchy AF.
Well.. Until the next patch, I guess..
interesting update, but so far ray tracing seems like a feature that the PS5 can barely take. i mean, every game i tried with ray tracing either suffered of bad framerate and unstability or an uglier version of the game with amazing lights.
it still look very nice. But i always turn it off after checking it for a couple minutes. To me, raytracing cant beat a stable 60fps.
Finally finished this yesterday, great game but it felt like running a marathon. Something I'm glad I did but am in no hurry to do again.
I don't like the idea of "balancing patches" like this that nerf a bunch of things in a single player game. For multiplayer it's to prevent metas that abuse a single weapon/move but for single player they just invalidate tons of walkthroughs, speed runs, guides, and videos by things that used to work not working as well. It's a strange approach.
@Samholy hogwarts legacy has really great RT ,but yeah the majority doesn't really add that much to the game
@tallythwack ssshhh dont mention hogwarts around a certain person 🤣
Lmfao RT?! They haven't fixed the massive bugs in their engine resulting in framerate issues and studder, yet you add friggin RT to Elden Ring?! Problems that have existed for over a decade with the engine they have barely updated In that time.
Love their games, but their engine, visuals, and performance are subpar.
Jesus Fromsoft. Maybe get your performance stable first, update that garbage UI maybe. Can a player get an update to bloodborne performance?!
Lmfao sorry, but trying to push RT with the performance and visual fidelity of your engine is just laughable. Such a bizarre and unnecessary investment of time that is likely going to be ripped apart via tech analysis.
@Northern_munkey lol...
@tallythwack didnt have a chance to try it yet ! but i heard great things about it.
@ORO_ERICIUS This will happen to old games, but new releases will always have compromises because the developers want to push texture quality/world size etc
@Arnna 5 times woah! I'm on my 2nd and finding whole new worlds. What a game!
@ORO_ERICIUS the financial/economic pickle is a GPU that can provide 4K FPS with RT either costs as much as a mortgage payment or uses many upscaling parlor tricks where you are still playing a 1440p game that looks sharper.
No one is going to spend $1,750-2,250 USD on a PS5 pro.
@Northern_munkey if its who I think it is, im blocked anyway 😂😂 they're quite sensitive.
@Samholy its great ,as is the game ,one of the best games I've played in a long while ,regardless of the hp license
@tallythwack 🤣
Frame rate is dog rough. Think I’ll turn it off
@tallythwack you got that right ! i loved every 140 hours i spent with it. cant wait for the expansion for another go with a new game+
@ORO_ERICIUS You should watch Digital Foundries latest podcast where they talk about this supposed Pro and why they doubt its happening. Honestly even if it does happen 4K/60fps still won't be an option for most games, console players don't understand that 4K/60fps is a luxury on PC's that cost far more then the PS5 so yeah that as standard on a console right now ain't happening. If a Pro does happen i expect it will focus on 120hz gaming and better RT as really that's all it could focus on.
@tallythwack Yeah it looks really nice in Hogwarts so much i kept it on, the 30fps holds so the trade off is pretty worth it.
@WallyWest we will see. Speculation and digital foundry podcasts are fictional atm not more guys . Two words and a number to remember: Unreal Engine 5 its not the Power alone... its the Code behind it.
@ORO_ERICIUS and no game has been put out in UR5 yet outside of Fortnite and UR5 was built for current gen consoles in mind so your point? Wanna know why 1440p is very popular with PC gaming? Because its easier getting 60fps with that while still having a good looking game. 4K/60fps won't be standard until next gen, PC's double the price of PS5 have issues getting that and require big trade offs to get it.
Here's the thing the PS4 Pro happened because 4K was becoming a big thing, both Sony and MS missed that train at the start and so played catch up mid gen. There's no missed train to play catch up on right now, 8K won't be a big thing for many years and 120hz gaming has become way more of a thing then most of us thought it would with the consoles we have. As DF explained there's not much Sony could add to the PS5 right now to justify a Pro, the PS5 has barely even started and has barely shown how powerful it actually is something FF16 and Spider-Man 2 should hopefully do. Finally the PS5 saw a price hike so a Pro would be $600+ a price Sony know would never sell. Prepare for a Slim but the chances of a Pro are very low.
@KundaliniRising333 totally agree, but rt is the new graphic tech console marketing buzz word so...
Each game i try it, its a mess, makes the whole screen blurry with slowness, adds very little.
And we finally have smooth motion with 60fps, i dont want to lose that already in this newgen for graphic marketing buzz.
Yeah, bloodborne, goodness, on ps4 it's a pain, im still early in it, waiting for a 60fps bc mode ps5 patch.
They'll probably sell at high price a ps5 version instead some day, sigh.
At least ds3 runs smooth now.
All their games run subpar on release platforms.
I mean, they must have made billions with success of their games, cant they invest a little in their graphic tech dept..
Still playing this beauty after more than a year. Other studios and publishers must kind of hate it. I've barely bought anything else new since it came out, especially on ps5.
@ORO_ERICIUS
YES. I've been saying this for a couple years. I shouldn't need to choose. That's what PCs are for.
I want 4k 60fps with all the bells and whistles as a standard minimum without having to pick individual variables' level of fidelity and/or turn things on/off.
@Arnna Sekiro is my fav. The movement/traversal, fluid combat/parry system really made it the greatest for me. Also keep in mind hack & slash games is my fav gaming genre. Kind of brought it "closer to home" so to speak.
Im not a DS2 hater tho. Really enjoyed my time with it on PS3. My biggest knock were the enemies were kind of redundant from an artstyle standpoint.
@Old-Red I hear you! I actually had to delete it off of my PS5 so I would play other games. Lol
@Arnna I feel like DS2 is needlessly underrated. I really enjoyed my time with it. Fume Knight was epic and was the first time I finally caved to calling in help on a boss.
Neat update! Still waiting for the game to be $20 New or cheaper before I jump into the fray though.
@Th3solution Dark Souls 2 copped a lot of criticism for some reason. It has a slightly different mood to the other titles but I thoroughly enjoy it and play it to this day. It also has the most content of all the Dark Souls titles and the DLC is especially great. I do a playthrough about once a year at this point.
One thing that’s unique about DS2 is the NG+. It’s the only souls game that gives you new bosses, new items and remixed enemy placement on NG+ or NG++ etc. Which is totally awesome. Also, you can use a certain item to allow you to replay boss battles and areas as many times as you like.
Enjoy the ride! DS3 is great too!
@CRASH64 Sekiro is the only one I haven’t played much. I got very frustrated and disillusioned.
I need to learn the parrying mechanics. I’m almost scared to go back lol.

@Jtheripper Resident Evil Village still runs great with RT enabled. So does RE2 Remake and RE3 Remake.
No idea why they don’t update Bloodborne with a 60fps patch. According to data miners it’s literally one line of code. Go figure.
I’d happily pay for the privilege too. Unsure why FROMSOFT can’t make this available considering Bloodborne is universally revered (and rightly so). 🙃
@Arnna That sounds great! I rarely go for NG+ runs, but maybe I‘ll need to make an exception for DS2. My time is typically too limited to do replays, but it sounds like the new content would make it worthwhile in this case. I have been tempted every time I’ve finished a From game to start another run with a different build. But rather than replay a game with a different build, then I just make sure to try a different build on my next From game instead. I did a balance build for BB, a magic user build for DeS, a strength build for DS1, and so I plan to try a Dex build for DS2.
I’m slightly off subject, but FromSoft is amazing with how they make their games so addictive and infinitely replayable.
@ORO_ERICIUS You will NEVER get 4K60FPS with our without raytracing if the developers CHOOSES not to implement it. Framerate is not a hardware problem. It is a CHOICE of the developers. Always! Because even with a PC and a 4090 a developer could use so extensive graphics, details, bad programming skills that 60FPS could not be possible. So, yes, fast hardware is necessary but not enough if the developers chooses not to go for 60FPS. Nevertheless a Pro version of the PS5 is always a good thing, especially for VR
@Arnna I can definitely understand that. Not sure what's more daunting: Relearning Sekiro, or starting a New Game 🤣
@Arnna i see, one line of code, well as i said, maybe it's a marketing thing, to sell someday a ps5 version, idk.
Im waiting, I'd pay for the update if need.
By the way, sekiro does run 60fps i read in bc mode on ps5 at least, so should be less frustrating.
Im tempted to get it really, on sale for 40 bucks cad, which is lowest it goes to since 4 years of it's release.
I almost always wait for prices in 20s..
But elden ring is one game im tempted to get at a heavier price too, maybe when it's near 40+bucks, it just looks so cool with main enemies animations, design, and curious of how they did open world from soft style.
