Finally, with less than a month until release, Sony is beginning to open up about Horizon Forbidden West’s anticipated PS5 exclusive expansion. Burning Shores, as previously reported, will launch on 19th April – and pre-orders are live starting today. The best news? This won’t break the bank, costing just £15.99/$19.99.
If you do decide to pre-order, you’ll get some bonuses for your troubles: the Blacktide Dye Outfit and Blacktide Sharpshot Bow. You’ll need to have completed the main campaign, including the final mission, to access the DLC, at which point Aloy will receive a call over her Focus inviting her to a new location.
“Aloy will then be able to travel to a dangerous new region south of the Tenakth Clan Lands, where players will experience a compelling new storyline featuring new characters, machines, and adventures – we look forward to sharing more details with you very soon,” game director Mathijs de Jonge teased on the PS Blog.

Glad the pre-orders are up so everyone can stop worrying.
Wow pretty great surprise. Really thought it be 40 judging from how Sony had been pricing things.
Let's go! Day 1 for me!
Assuming it's a similar size to the Zero Dawn expansion that's pretty great value, especially as the base game is now on PS+ Extra. Actually come to think of it if I play Forbidden West on PS+ can you still pay for the DLC? And if so what then happens if you stop paying the PS+ sub? You lose everything, even the DLC you paid for I suppose?
Yes! We need this right now!
Can't wait! If it's anything like Frozen Wilds then this expansion is great value.
@Ooccoo_Jr You wouldn't be able to play the DLC if the game got removed, but you would still own it should it ever get re-added or you just bought the game.
@Ooccoo_Jr I've paid for DLC when games were on PS Now. What usually happens is you still own the DLC, but without the base game you can't access it.
@AdamNovice Like seriously.
Halle-freaking-lujah!! About bloody time!! If it was just $20 and no catch why take so long? SMH😝
I’m glad it’s after the main game, just finished Thebes last night trying to pace myself. It took me 5 years to finish HZD b/c about halfway thru I played the Frozen Wilds and it kind of burned me out so I just stopped after Sylens (RIP) helped break me out of the arena battle. And then God of War released the next day and I just never went back until buying HFW.
So if I buy it today I get the new preorder stuff today or April 19th? Article is a bit confusing for me on that part. And “black tide” seems spoilerish. Guessing that’s after Hephaestus? Still can’t fly. Which was pretty funny when Aloy basically said in game to those 2 Queen women “sorry, can’t help you with that right now, I’m not up to that part of the game yet”.😂
Time to go spend my $18 credit. Glad Sony let’s us put less than $5 on our credit card now, that was way annoying for way too long.🤑
cc @NEStalgia
Nice i will be pre-ordering it then. Really excited for the expansion and seeing how it takes advantage of the PS5.
Yeah, I'll absolutely be forking over $20 for this.
Day1 for sure!
Thrilled what they can achieve visually as a ps5 only expansion. Probably some additions and new visual features might make the jump also in the base game.
I still have yet to complete the main story. I'll get back to it once I finish my replay of Witcher 3.
@themightyant Maybe that’s b/c we can usually pre-order when they announce the dlc, which in this case would have been December, and they don’t normally then make us wait 3 months until 4 weeks before release to do so. 😝
And a lot of people, myself included, after Miles Morales and Lost Legacy each became their own stand alone game, were expecting this to cost $30 or even $40, so $20 is looking like a steal. Especially to those of us w/ $18 credit sitting there since before Christmas waiting to spend it on this.😁
@get2sammyb Am I reading this right:
“If you do decide to pre-order, you’ll get some bonuses for your troubles: the Blacktide Dye Outfit and Blacktide Sharpshot Bow. You’ll need to have completed the main campaign, including the final mission, to access the DLC, at which point Aloy will receive a call over her Focus inviting her to a new location.”
Do we have to complete the main campaign final mission to access the preorder bonus die & bow or the Burning Shores area? If that’s just a copy and paste from the presser and your unsure yourself that’s fine, I know you rushed to get this out just to shut me up.😂
Bought! Nice fair price hopefully for a decent amount of content. Be interesting to see why it was ps5 only this time.
Since when did we need to pre order dlc. Has that always been a thing or am I trippin?
That's surprisingly low price. What's wrong with the DLC? I don't trust Sony when they're not mugging me....
@rjejr Wow, so no drama, they really just refused to say anything about the game until last minute....and still haven't said much....and they have preorder bonuses but didn't let anyone preorder more than a few weeks. Weird. I guess it's just questionable marketing and nothing more after all.
Sony is officially Nintendo. Nothing they do makes sense. Nothing they do is predictable. Yet somehow they make endless money anyway.
Well as I don't own a PS5 it will break the bank just to play dlc. I hadn't finished forbidden west when they announced the dlc, when they announced it was PS5 exclusive I was in no rush to finish it and still haven't. I'm fine with games being made specifically for PS5 but add on content for a game available on both gens is a bit much.
@Jswift56 I have a feeling the teased battle with a Horus is really most of the reason it's PS5-only. And is probably more CPU related than anything visible. That's.....a lot of tentacles....
Hopefully this'll be added as part of a PS Plus bundle eventually. Having managed to play the first and second games on ps plus, I'd ideally like to get this one without any extra cost.
Playing the waiting game seems to pay off at the minute with games coming to PS Plus after only a year.
@SirMarshmallow for expansion style DLC? Yup, pretty much always been a thing, the extra gubbins is a rare occurrence though. Related - buying a season pass before the content is available is the exact same as pre-ordering DLC.

Preordered. I can’t wait to play it. Loving Call of the Mountain at the moment.
I'm kinda on the fence here. The last expac was 40€ and this one is 20€ post price-hike?
I wonder how long it is, I'm betting it's going to be really short.
@Athrum Even if it is short, I'll always take quality over quantity.
For $20 that's an absolute steal! I was expecting closer to $35-$40.
Can't wait to jump back into the game.
@Athrum Wdym? Frozen Wilds was also 20 if you mean that.
YEEEEES!! Thank god it’s not a $30 DLC, already preordered it lol.
nope i will wait for a complete edition
I'm glad it's cheap enough, just worry me that it's probably gonna be short, not the epic like frozen wilds was
£15.99 is cool, but it’s size and quality that matters.
If it ends a up a 5 hour PS5 graphical show case like PSVR2 call of the mountain then £15.99 is not that good is it.
Forbidden West's fidelity was absolutely fantastic and is possibly still unrivalled by games since. I am really curious about the decision to make this PS5 only and am hoping we really do see some further improvements to justify the decision not to make it cross-gen.
@Dezzy70 given that Frozen Wilds was about 8 hours without the side content and about 17-18 hours doing all the side content, I expect this will be similar. Even if it was only 8 hours I think £15 for an 8 hour quality experience is more than worth it.
Will there be a value-priced complete edition of this game? I don't own the base game, but I would like to. Out of principle, I don't buy DLC for games I don't own. I can buy them separately, but I'm still waiting for Forbidden West to drop below $35.
Blacktide Dye Outfit (available at the first dye merchant)
Blacktide Sharpshot Bow (available from the first merchant in the Burning Shores)
Pre-ordered on the spot! So stoked.
I'm excited for the DLC and trust it will be great but it's a bit weird that with less than a month to go, they've barely shown anything.

@Dezzy70 CotM isn't a "5 hour" showcase...I don't know where that came from. I think the Push review said 8 hours or something. Maybe if rushing it for a review and not spending time taking in the sights which is a lot of what it's about, but I spent a lot longer with it just to get to the credits. I spent about an hour a day on it for maybe 2.5 weeks and if going for all the collectables and shooting targets to find (not going for trophies just the in-game collectables/targets) it's a lot longer since I have to go back and find what I missed. It's not a huge HZD sized 100 hour epic, but it's not a demo either.
@rjejr And then right after that I read dezzy's "it’s size and quality that matters. " line and you put the whole thing in the wrong context.
One of my rare first day buys this year. Can’t wait to play this! Glad it won’t destroy my thin wallet
Seemingly reasonable price for sure. so that's good. Looking back at the Frozen Wilds dlc from the first one though, I don't think I would be ok paying even this price for what that DLC was. It just didn't click for me as meaningful expansion to the main story. It had some cool new machines and all, but the story, and more icons in a very separate feeling space and storyline was just ok.
It's a little different here though, I pretty did MOST of Forbidden West's content before even getting the flying mount, so more reason to actually get to use that is great! Hopefully the area and storyline doesn't feel tacked on, and perhaps Guerilla explores options to refine or evolve the loop in a way that allows for further evolution if they do a sequel.
It totally makes sense that this is ps5 only too, especially since a significant chunk of units shipped out post launch period were part of the ps5 bundle offered.
Just preordered. Gonna be a fun weekend when it releases.

The reverse of this low pricing is: how long will it take to complete it?
I'd rather spend 40$ for a heftyer 15h long DLC instead of 15$ for a 3-4h "blink and it's over" one...
@Ward_ting
I agree I totally enjoyed frozen wilds
So looking forward to this dlc as well, hoping it’s a good 8 hours as well.
Would be nice if they do a dedication or remembrance for Lance Reddick (RIP)
@theMEGAniggle I imagine there's more than enough time to put either in the credits or at the start of the game an "in memory of" page. There's at least one other game that I know does that at the start of the game, but I don't remember what one. Might be hard for DLC to add that though since it's not the main game. But I'd be surprised if there was nothing.
I'm really curious to how they will conclude Sylens. R.I.P. Lance.
At $20 will definitely get this after go through Ragnarok and my backlog. Looks great and really enjoyed this open world
I will buy it next month. Love Horizon FW too much!!
Nice to see the very reasonable price and release date all becoming official. I'll be sure to pre-order it once I get on my PS5 tonight.
@NEStalgia @theMEGAniggle When The Witcher 3 added it's dlc they changed some stuff like menus, maybe HFW will get the same treatment. I have a long list of QoL improvements for the game.
@rjejr I think HZD did the same with H ..FW... The first HFW now the second HFW, it added another skill tree and other QoL features, too.
Pre-ordered and ready to go!
Even though I have yet to own a Playstation fiver, I am ready for when that day comes. This will be the first things I will play on it.
@rjejr I guess you were worried over nothing, happy to see it's only $20 and no delay at all!
Though I still need to re-play Zero Dawn first, and then play thru Forbidden West for the very first time.
But I also have Hogwarts Legacy consuming my time...and I'd like to re-play thru Jedi Fallen Order before Survivor drops.
So many games, but so little time.
@LivewireCLS
Maybe it's not long enough to show much of a trailer?
It would be good if Sony followed the Nintendo model to some extent for their first party titles.
Put the DLC/Expansions behind the subscription, but for these, put them behind the Premium Tier. As a business model, so many more people would subscribe if Burning Shores and other DLC/Ex, like Ghost of Tsushima Iki Island, were behind the Premium Tier. Just a thought.
Will there be a Complete Edition down the road?
@NEStalgia I could use another skill tree, just about finished, level 49, haven't gotten to Gemini to get Hephaestus yet.
Have you played HFW (the new one)? I should probably know that but I don't. Don't want to spoil anything as we talk about BS.
@KidBoruto Yeah worrying is kind of my thing. Not sure if that's b/c I'm a jaded Gen-Xer or a New Yorker or a combination of both but it does suck to be me sometimes. The only upside I guess is being pleasantly surprised when something like this happens. Though I'm always waiting for the bad news anyway. 😝
I'm 100 hours into HFW, it's really good. Zelda TotK I'm afraid will seem like a 3DS game after this, almost unplayable. 😢
Edit: If you're short n time you can probably skip replaying HZD. HFW is very similar, just better, and there's a "recap video" in the HFW start menu you can click on that covers the story well enough. I actually got lucky in a way b/c I had played 90% of HZD the year after it released so I had the last 10%. During that time at least 2 characters, maybe 3, mentioned going to the "forbidden west". So it was a nice lead-in. 👍
@rjejr Not yet, I was just about to start it in the next week or two probably. Just finished Call of the Mountain the other day but want to go back and find all the missing targets and collectibles still. I figured I might as well wait for BS so if it includes QoL fixes that integrate into the DLC I have them all at the start.
@NEStalgia Waiting was a good plan. It was my plan until I did the math and realized it would probably take me 90 hours to finish the base game (looking more like 140 hours now) before the dlc releases, then probably another 12 hours for the DLC, I'm slow and thorough, and Zelda, which I've already pre-odered, releases May 12th. That was cutting it too close, I'd like at least a week between 2 ginormous open world games to watch season 2 of Vox Machina.
But it's good to know you haven't played it, so I'll shut up now. 😉
@rjejr lol yeah between vr and totk I'm fully prepared to not be done with hfw until November or even December, there will be months I don't touch it at all! I spent over 100h in hzd and completed everything, even got platinum. And hfw is supposedly bigger!
@NEStalgia HFW feels bigger, with more to do, that I'm not doing. My kid finished it over the summer in about 60 hours just doing the main story. They said "if it wasn't in the first game, I wasn't doing it". There's a side game called "Strike" that we just call "Gwent" in my house b/c we're dweebs like that which I'm not playing. Who has time? 🤷♂️
@rjejr I may just have to do that. Hopefully Jedi Survivor gives a similar story recap for new players.
@Jam78 FWIW, Final Fantasy VII Remake's Intergrade expansion did the same thing (and SquareEnix announced that the remaining titles in the FFVII series will be PS5 only, as well). With PS5s being more readily available, I would expect this from any cross-gen titles. Another reason to get consumers to buy the new system.
@TheCollector316 Typically the "Complete" editions of these games don't release for 6+ months after the DLC releases, sometimes longer.
