PS5’s astronomic rise in Japan continues, with another impressive 91,729 units flogged during the week ending 26th February, 2023. The new-gen system has been readily available in the region since the beginning of the year, and it’s had a colossal impact on the console’s install base, which is really motoring now.
However, there were questions about the console’s software situation, with very few titles charting. That led to speculation that a lot of the units may be being exported overseas. However, this week sees several PS5 titles chart, including Like a Dragon: Ishin, which managed 31,439 units on the system – almost as many as the PS4 version, which sold 35,897 units. A decent enough result.
Hogwarts Legacy also continues to sell well on the new-gen console, while Octopath Traveler 2 sold 14,422 units – despite its predecessor never launching on PlayStation at all. Nintendo Switch is, of course, still the undisputed king of software sales in Japan – but there are signs that PS5 is beginning to pick up pace now, and we’ll definitely get a better indication when Resident Evil 4 releases later this month.

Golden oldie PS4 selling over twice the Series X and S combined - embarrassing.
@sanderson72 when you put a subscription model above making 1st party games, and starve the console of decent 1st party games for a couple of decades, that's what you get. MS won't be bothered. They've gone on record as saying GP is their focus over making consoles.
The PS5 is definitely on track to 100+ million sold despite the slow start.
I can't wait to see this chart the month FF XVI comes out.
3 million PS5 sold in Japan alone ain't bad at all considering it seemed to suffer a little more for PS5 stock last year compared to other countries. And almost 8 million PS4 sold in Japan to date ain't bad either. I'd love to see the total numbers like this for Europe and America
Edit Japan has almost sold 30 million Switch alone in Japan, makes the PS4 numbers small in comparison. Well they do love their handheld gaming over there so not all that surprising
Yeah, Sony is becoming a legit competitor in Japan again. Nintendo is going to have to fight to seize back home turf.
Those damn Chinese scalpers strike again!
@Beerheadgamer82 the Japanese sure do love their switch. To think that roughly 25% of all the switches in the world are in 1 country!
I think if the ps5 can sell more than the ps4 and get around 10 million, Sony will be happy. The console sat under the TV in Japan has been on the decline since the ps2.
@Serialsid after the WiiU failed miserably everywhere, the hybrid Switch is one of the greatest comebacks ever. Nintendos decision to do 2 in 1 is one of the greatest decisions in gaming. Especially when you consider how dated the tech inside it now is and still currently has legs. Mind boggling
Holy moly Kirby is killing it.
I thought xbox was making a come back in Japan 🤔.
For Sony to keep up this momentum over the switch they need more Japanese exclusive games.
@riceNpea @sanderson72
Or the fact that historically, Xbox has never done well in Japan, because it doesn't appeal to most Japanese. GamePass didn't exist for the first 2 generations.
Keep hating on GP, salty Sony fans. GP is great for the gamer. 💧🍷😉
@Ralizah It's about darned time. The Nintendo monopoly on Japanese content has become remarkably stale and frustrating.
Though I still don't know that the SAME software really has a competitor. Nintendo, especially with Switch more than 3DS seems to have really settled hard into just their specific games selling well on it.
@UltimateOtaku91 Xbox is doing better than before in Japan. Overall the needle moving up rather than down is meaningful, but it's a far cry from being relevant there, and never has been relevant there, so not a comeback. The fact that there's some amount of relevance may be notable though.
All that said, though, Xbox hasn't had key software (anywhere) yet, and Japan buys hardware with software (which is why we were all questioning hardware selling without software here for weeks), so I do think you'll see a spike with Starfield, because Skyrim was very popular in Japan, and I expect Starfield will actually have decent popularity there. Though it will probably be mostly PC. And a decent amount of streaming customers. I'm sure numbers will be better than "500" when that launches though. It won't catapult it into being a relevant console, and MS isn't really targeting being "#1 in console" (no matter how much Jim insists otherwise), but seeing some amount of life in the product would still be better than in the past.
@EVIL-C hate? Salty? A little immature.....don't you think?
@UltimateOtaku91
Xbox can't have a comeback when the brand never had any success in the first place. If anything, it's Playstation making a (slow) comeback.
Good to see PS5 software starting to chart in the top 10. The big one for the foreseeable future is obviously FF16.
@riceNpea Based on what I've read here for years, not at all. 😜
@EVIL-C it's a PS-centric website. There's going to be bias, that's the point. As for hate, that's in your head.
@riceNpea "As for hate, that's in your head."
Delusion is in yours. 😳
Starting to look like Sony's only console competitor in Japan is itself.
It still doesn't feel like Sony are in a rush to release more Japanese appealing games?
@EVIL-C No it isn't..gamepass is the reason you won't see triple AAA games on your platform any time soon.
@zebric21 LOL, all platforms are my platforms. Playing Metroid Dread on Switch, GoldenEye on Xbox and Metro Exodus on PS5. I'm not a fanboy. 😉
Also, last I checked, Xbox has plenty of so-called "AAA" titles. I don't know what sadder, your ignorance or that you still use that antiquated, subjective, meaningless descriptor. 😂
@EVIL-C So you overpay to have access to anything..clever you..
@zebric21 Overpay? Are you serious? That's your best counter to me spending my own money on things I like? I buy these devices because I'm a gamer, genius. Shocking revelation, I'm sure. 🙃
If anything, your post reeks of jealousy. Or you think everything else is beneath Emperor God King PlayStation. Or both. Whatever. 😂
@EVIL-C Yeah i believe ps5 is the superior platform cause gamers pay to play the best games..you and me included offcourse. And it's the reason you won't see productions like HFW and god of war in gamepass any time soon. You won't see any VR headset also in xbox camp. To me you just sounded like another gamepass evangelist searching for another free month with a rewards program. whatever makes you happy man. I don't care..but don't insult us that gamepass is the thing we all need and it's the best cause most people here don't care about it.
