The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition was just released on PS5, and the RPG runs quite badly even in its dedicated performance mode, with the state of the game already causing some players to call for refunds in threads on the game's subreddit.
Customer support has directed affected players (which appears to be everyone on PS5) to submit bug reports to embattled publisher Private Division, although bugs are likely not the root cause of the game's performance issues.
Private Division was hit with a round of layoffs earlier this week, a move parent company Take-Two Interactive described as necessary for "another extended period of success". The Outer Worlds was originally developed by Obsidian Entertainment (now owned by Microsoft), with the game's Twitter account directing fans towards the stricken publisher for answers.
It's unclear if either Private Division or Sony will issue refunds. It's admittedly not the train wreck that was Cyberpunk 2077 at launch, but we'll keep an eye on the situation as it develops. I’m not seeing constant frame rate drops on my PS5, maybe because I prefer quality mode to performance. I never choose performance modes in games as I prefer graphics fidelity and higher resolution.
I’m several hours into the game and I’ve seen just the odd minor dip in fps, apart from that and the colours being too saturated, it’s all good.
The Outer Worlds is one of the top ten most generic and average games I've ever played. As wide as an ocean but as deep as a puddle.
@LifeGirl Pretty much my issue with Outer Worlds. It plays it so safe that it comes off as generic as hell.
@Haggis555 Same here... but the "discerning gamers" cannot play at 30fps, due to their brains going to explode and the $10 USD upgrade is too much to waste, since their nan telly make all their games look like PS3, and yes, their telly is from that era, haha
This is the worst performance i have seen in a game since last Sunday's Man Utd performance! I had to stop playing
@ATaco Well great logic, considering that Obsidian didn't even work on the port/patch, Published by Private Division (as they own the publishing rights to the first game) and developed by a third-party, Microsoft has nothing to do with the product.
@ATaco Yeah. And he also ordered bad ports for PC a Xbox Series X/S consoles
Honestly it's sad what Private Division has done to tarnish this IP with this shoddy port. Thanks god they won't have anything to do with sequel.
@MaikonCSGarcia At least Godot knew it was said in jest.
@Throb Bravo 👏 🙌
@ATaco It is Impossible to know If u r being serious or not in a Push Square post criticizing Microsoft, the craziest theories about Microsoft hurting the poor and innocent Sony are common on this site. And the articles themselves contain false or ambiguous information as long as It paints Microsoft in a bad light, Even if this information contradicts one previously posted on the site.
Such as the fact that Nintendo is or is not included in the console market, the exclusion was defended by the site when Sony argued that Nintendo has its own niche. But it was disingenuous of Microsoft to exclude them from the market when it generated a 70/30 split between Xbox and PlayStation. Remembering that this was the division defended by Sony/CMA/EU/FTC. Another fact is that including Nintendo would only benefit Microsoft since its percentage would be even smaller.
@LifeGirl The formula's been done to death in Elders Scrolls and Fallout, both of which have become very tired for me. I remember quickly becoming bored of this when it came out on the PS4.
Called it a quick cash grab when it first got announced and seems I was right.
Sucks for those who spent money on this trash.
I've just finished the PS4 version and jumped straight into PS5 version and oh wow is it horrible.
It's fine indoors, and looking down at the ground, but anything else in the open world it's in the teens.
Mind you the quicker load screens make up for it.
All bugs aside, how fun is the game actually? For someone that's really into fallout/elder scrolls, how does it hold up to that?
I have a question for any one that might know , could Sony use this as an example in the case with Microsoft to prove their point that Microsoft could possibly realse a bugger version of game on their console?
@MaikonCSGarcia Never let the truth get in the way of a good story - it’s always been like this.
Of course you’ve got the misinformed, ignorant, and just plain stupid, currently having a field day over this on twitter…using it as an example that backs up Sonys paranoia about Cod that was revealed yesterday. Of course, regardless of truth, it’s not exactly great timing for this given it is now an Xbox ip. I’m honestly surprised I’ve not yet seen conspiracy theories that Sony themselves are behind it… might start one.
@Otherbarry one would think, alongside complaining about concerns over lack of parity (after a decade of cod on PlayStation getting exclusive content), raising this as an example when MS had nothing to do with it would get laughed at by the likes of the CMA…but, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if it was used and taken onboard…maybe as a fear MS could potentially have a 3rd party publisher put PlayStation versions out on the cheap. But then the whole point of the 10 year contract is to also ensure parity -same game, same quality.
Sonys trying to reach beyond the stars at this point, so who knows
£5 for the upgrade. The colour is off. You notice it straight at customisation of your character. But it.... i dunno... sometimes it looks better and other times. Not quite right. Gameplay is still as generic and it's as if fisher price made an rpg
Sony really need to offer refund like steam..
Hopefully the game will be patched fast for players affected by this serious issue.
I wouldn't buy outer worlds a second time. It was an ok game but very "by the numbers" or "safe"...or perhaps worse..."generic".
Maybe I've just seen and played too many games that fit that description. Hogwarts Legacy just
( JUST) manages to miss those accusations but flies dangerously close.
I'm not sure what would spruce games up but if you want an idea....go with much darker content.
A couple of pointers...."empire strikes back" instead of return of the jedi, Deep space nine instead of voyager, deathly hallows rather than philosophers stone. Frankly, make more games with the brilliant world building of Elden Ring but without the insanely difficult boss fights. Games can still have immersive gameplay loops, they often just need more depth of character.
@Bleachedsmiles I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if Sony tries to use it for their laughable accusations (even though the performance is awful on Xbox too) and to be honest with the recent lies Sony has been saying and the down right hilarious accusations towards Microsoft I really wouldn't be surprised if it was don't on purpose they seem to be getting desperate and childish enough to do that
