The free-to-play flight sim War Thunder launched on PS4 just days after its launch, and developer Gaijin Entertainment has been supporting it ever since. The point is that the team knows its way around military planes, so the announcement of Aces of Thunder (which isn't free-to-play, by the way) is pretty exciting.
This new title is a PSVR2 game that'll have you flying various WW2-era planes in first-person. Having played Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown's virtual reality missions on the original PSVR, we can safely say this will be a pretty intense experience. Unlike that game, however, Aces of Thunder looks to be much more realistic. You'll be put in the cockpit of true-to-life recreations of military aircraft, and then engage in dogfights in online multiplayer battles.
According to the official description, the game has been "made specifically with capabilities of PlayStation VR2 in mind", so we expect it'll take full advantage of the hardware's bells and whistles. The blurb continues, mentioning various multiplayer modes, "physically accurate" flight and damage models, and "dozens of legendary planes" to pilot.
There's no release date as yet, but you can wishlist the game on PS Store now. What do you make of Aces of Thunder? Dive bomb to the comments section below.

Looks so good. VR will probably dominate my wallet this year.
Will have to look into this. But I’d it also F2P? Usually avoid those like the plague.
@thefourfoldroot1 It's not specified whether this is free-to-play, we'll have to wait and see. My guess is that it won't be, though.
Was 100% onboard with this as it looks amazing until i read online multiplayer. I dont play online and this doesnt appear to have a single player campaign from what i can tell. If thats the case its a real shame.
@thefourfoldroot1 Same. Free to Play is such a misnomer. Free to Start is more accurate, you always have to pay either in money or grind/time. That is the model.
@themightyant
Indeed.
And it also seems like it’s online play only without a campaign going by that trailer. So, yeah, not looking great. But not going to judge yet. Might be extremely fun gameplay with a good platinum campaign to give some proper direction and targets.
I can't wait to play some flight sims on my psvr2! This looks great, just worried if it's f2p that it will be a big grind fest.
Hopefully it's decent, and with project Wingman coming soon with its big single player campaign we should have some decent flight games to play.
Now we just need ace combat 8 vr announced 🙏 😁
This looks amazing.
This might be worth vomiting all over my entertainment centre for👍 🤮 👍
Yes!!!! Finally…these r the kind of games that’ll make VR thrive!
PSVR2 is getting some sweet support... I hope it keep rolling in...
This looks really good! Hopefully it's not F2P, and hopefully it at least has bot match support like Pavlov does so it's still playable single player. The WWII setting sounds like it could be great for VR, though I admit I'm still hoping the Project Wingman rumor is true since that has a full campaign for single player.
I can't believe there is still no word (and very probably never will be) on a PSVR2 update for Star Wars Squadrons. That would be the deal clencher for me buying.
@thefourfoldroot1 We had a press release earlier that says the game will be on a paid model rather than free-to-play, just FYI
@Quintumply
Great, thanks for the info. Hopefully it will have some type of single player campaign.
@MattSilverado Right, but it certainly hinges on how successful the device is (in sales, obviously) in the next several months (holiday season, especially).
VR can easily be perceived as a gimmick by people who have never tried it, or who have tried early stuff like GearVR. And at $550, it's an even harder sell.
So, we fans need to spread the word as much as possible because that is how this niche could become mainstream.

This was added in later.
This does look pretty cool, I'm not an online competitive player in general, but I'm willing to give it a try. Kinda wish it was War Thunder in its entirety, but hey gotta start somewhere I guess.
