What if The Last of Us: Part I was a first-person shooter? It’s a question fans have been asking for quite some time, and we even got a glimpse courtesy of some well-placed photo mode snapshots earlier in the year. But now footage of a bonafide PC mod has emerged, and the results are spectacular – even if there are still clearly some issues to be resolved.
While the weapons aren’t properly aligned, leading to some very iffy aiming, we reckon seeing the world through Joel’s eyes makes the combat a lot more claustrophobic. You can really get personal with the enemies, and action seems so much more aggressive from this perspective. We like the way the camera briefly switches to third-person in some scenes as well, before toggling back to the new perspective.
Obviously this is all a work in progress and just an example of what could be possible, but it begs the question, is this something you’d like to see Naughty Dog explore in a future instalment? Raise your weapons in the comments section below, and be sure to let us know.
Would you play a first-person The Last of Us game? (403 votes)
- Yes, I'd be there day one
- Maybe, I'm not against it
- No, keep it third-person

Problem with first person is peripheral vision, third person solves that. Although third person is a bit of a cheat because you can see enemies while in cover. Devs would have to come up with 2nd person to balance things haha.
This in VR with motion controls... c'mon Sony!
I do prefer third person but first person does look very good. Imo all games like TLOU should come with the option to play in 1st an 3rd person.
@TheArt I heard years ago that someone asked what a second person game would be? Can't remember who answered but they said maybe the Forbidden Siren games where you can see from the perspective of the enemies as well as your own.
@AdamNovice @TheArt yeah it’s pretty much where you see your player character through the eyes of another in game character, bit of a weird one I guess as it’s essentially a third person perspective of your character through the eyes of an in game character. I guess it could be either first or third person perspective looking at your player character, from the second party characters point of view.
An easy example would be a split screen co-op game where you’re looking at your own character from the other players screen perhaps?
As someone who hates tedious stealth gameplay, this actually would have appealed to me, even though I’m not really much of a FPS player either. Stealth is definitely worse.
I am very glad that I am someone who can enjoy third and first person equally! Can’t imagine having to pass on awesome games because of the camera angle.
I do have a dislike for first person views in racing games though, so I can sympathise. Having said that, I used to love and only use first person for racing games back in the day so it seems like something you can learn to like/dislike, to a degree.
I like FPS because it's more immersive and at least on paper harder. TPS seems like more fitting for 'turn your brain off' casual games like Assassins Creed and Horizon.
really disgusting, it's like taking something great and make it like every other ***** game out there.
@AdamNovice @TheArt @kyleforrester87 What about Moss? The mouse is the protagonist, and you see her through the eyes of the entity helping, in addition to reading a book. I think that qualifies.
Love what the PC community does to games. Only wish Dreams got this treatment.
@Jaz007 I think that works lol
Wow. Imagine that in VR.
Perfect for psvr2
The Last of Us: PS5 Remake 1st Person Edition
Coming in 2024
Cost: 69.99
That's actually a really cool mod lol. If they could fix the reticule it would be perfect.
@Jaz007 That's not a bad shout, other games like Astro bot and Ghost Giant had a similar perspective too.
@Loamy Using first person in racing games is like telling the devs they wasted all their time designing those photorealistic cars, if they knew you'd go first person they wouldn't even bother - thanks a lot for wasting our time! 😆
@TheArt
On GT7 I play cockpit view.
Way Back in the day, when the cockpits on racing games were terrible at best, I did pure first person or third person depending on circumstances. Third person for arcade racers and 1st person for sim racers.
But GT7 actually has good car interior detail. So that’s how I play it.
Honestly, kudos for using ‘an’ instead of ‘a’ in the headline.
@OrtadragoonX Cockpit view is okay but some use the road or bonnet view which looks like an insult to the devs hard work lol.
Happy it didn’t release this way or I’d have never played it. FPS is my 2nd least favorite type of game behind turn-based RPG.
I’m down with it. This the way…..
Other than no iron sights this looks good, especially combat even with no reticle. Going from fp to 3rd person in combat can often feel too out of body. The switch between views in scenes are smooth.
TLOU PS4 remaster overall has excellent 3rdP camera work and controls. That may be why this fp mod works so well unlike how horrible the added fp camera works in GTA 5. Fallout and Elder Scroll games have an excellent fp to 3p one button tap switch. This mod shows that such an on the go switch could add to game play. A field of view slider should be standard no matter the view. Also in fp when looking down we should see legs and feet.
For me good game camera like good movie cinematography is when I am not aware of it, good or bad. While playing TLOU remaster I never thought about the camera.
Looks gorgeous but the gameplay looks ruined. You aren’t meant to be an FPS super soldier with crack shot aim, all tension is removed from gameplay. How about crawling through the grass Snake Eater style?
Seeing as I only like a very short few FPS games, it's a no from me. Keep it third person thank you very much.
