Publisher Electronic Arts has announced that F1 23, its upcoming and hotly anticipated Formula One racer, will not receive support for PSVR2. This news is somewhat disappointing in light of the successful implementation of VR in Gran Turismo 7, which PlayStation fans reliably continue to show up for.
In a response provided to MIXED News, EA revealed that F1 23 would not be getting a PSVR2 port, although a PC VR version is slated to launch on 16th June 2023. The standard version of the game will launch on both PS5 and PS4 several days earlier, on 13th June.
What do you think of EA's decision to skip PSVR2 with F1 23? Are you one of Gran Turismo 7's PSVR2 proponents, spreading the good word about that game's immersive implementation? Register your concern in the comments section below.

Not a good look for the platform.
Driving the Super Formula cars in GT7 is just way more fun, anyway. The F1 games are more realistic, but with that comes stiff cars that are hard to turn & spinout way too easy if you drive without traction control. Still, would have been nice to have another sim option in VR on PlayStation.
I would not have bought it if it were on PSVR2. I could do another 100 hours of GT7 w/ the headset easy. It's honestly made it tough to get into my other PSVR2 purchases
As many said in the other articles, no PSVR2 means I’ll be skipping this year. Hopefully it makes 2024.
With what Codies did with Dirt Rally on original VR you can guess who made the decision.
To me it sounds like EA feels PSVR2 sales are just not there yet for them to invest on that mode for PS5, and Sony didn’t pay them to develop it the way they done in the past with Capcom and Resident Evil.
@Tharsman @Slippship Certainly seems that way seeing as they bothered with Grid Legends on the Quest 2.
How many players bought and are consistently playing sim games with PSVR2?
If they don’t want to make the best version of the game they can, that’s up to them.
Surely when developing and delivering a racing simulator and faced with limited budget and two choices there is only one winner in the either / or
a) include the most immersive, realistic and seat of your pants driving experience through the inclusion of VR support OR
b) include the ability to buy a coloured sofa
Surely everyone can see the sofa option is of far more value to your seasoned simracer?
Just EA making excuses, I swear they are the laziest and worst developers in the industry
Sony really needed to get these big companies on board for PSVR2, and it sort of highlights why VR will always be a niche market. Sony were never going to constantly release first party releases either, so they need as much support as possible.
I’m not so sure it’s “hotly anticipated”. Yes, it has new track Las Vegas and Qatar, but not much else to justify its £70 price tag. Despite being a F1 fan I won’t be buying it at launch this year.
I think there are a number of factors involved here, by all accounts the PC VR implementation for F122 was not great so do we really want a substandard PSVR2 version when we know what GT7 is capable of?
There may have been time & budgeting constraints and just a lack of developer skill with the PSVR2 platform at this time. Though they could have said we are considering it and released it after launch at some point. We don't know for sure, but it's not like Sony wouldn't help in some capacity to get this out on their platform. They have the advantage over PC in only developing for a target spec too.
It could be that the launch base of units sold is not enough for EA as @Tharsman suggested, though it's not like they are developing solely for VR, and surely any add-on sales for the current userbase would justify development costs even if only half of them bought it being a high profile release. I'm speculating, but there must be around 500,000 sold so far at least. especially with going to retail.
For context, DIRT Rally VR DLC released 5 months after PSVR1 launch in Feb 2017 but Codies weren't owned by EA then of course and PSVR was almost at a million units sold by that point (notably being launched holiday season 2016 and available at retail).
Anyway, if anyone's still reading (sorry I'm rambling) I hope they reconsider and invest time in adding it down the line.
Would have actually bought day 1 if it had psvr2 support, something I've never done with an F1 game. Not too bothered though as GT7 is by far the best VR experience you can have and still has me hooked.
Don't think it's install base either as there are plenty of PC ports happening right now. Just think it's EA being EA.
That's a bad decision. It's difficult to go back to flatscreen racing once you have experienced the true glory of racing in VR.
As we have GT7 in VR, F1 isn't such a loss but this decision is still disappointing.
I just hope the next rally game is supported on PS VR2, Dirt Rally VR was brilliant and was considerably easier for me than in flat mode. Wipeout was the same.
If there isn't support for psvr2 in the next rally game then I shall be writing to my MP.
Totally expected them not to put this on PSVR2, although equally disappointed given they've done it for PC.
Would be a game changer and instant buy for me. Oh well 😌
Sony simply needs to enable support for PC VR if it's possible via firmware update. I don't know why they didn't incorporate this from launch itself. You're talking about a super niche tech, so you'd want to make it as versatile as possible, at least. Given that Sony are embracing the PC gaming market so well, this would've been perfect. They'd have sold a ton more VR games and PSVR 2s if they'd incorporated support for PC.
@SBan83 why would Sony want to do that? They are making very little on the hardware, they'll make their money on software sales, mostly through the PS store(would imagine most game sales will be digital). They make it PC compatible and steam gets the money, Sony would only get a cut from 1st party games.
Would only make sense if Sony had a PC store and the games could only work through their launcher.
@TrickyDicky99 price is excellent for what you are getting, and you have no idea what the install base is or why EA aren't doing a psvr2 port.
Ok well then I´m not interested. GT 7 has me covered for another 1000 hours but I would have picked up F1 as well. Bad desicion by EA especially since they are making a PC VR version.
I'd love to hear what the install base number is from the usual suspects commenting?
Anyway, EA just saved me some money.
@Serialsid Because Sony would not get money for those 3rd party game sales on Steam anyway? But at least they'd get a nice cut for the first party VR titles, and most importantly, they'll SELL MORE PSVRs
Wow that’s not a great look is it for psvr2 . Is it already dead?
@Mikey856 No
@TABZ420 Agreed! Doesn't give much hope for the new wrc game either 😑
@CaptD let's just hope the wrc game is good first of all as EA is involved....may God have mercy on us all 🤣
@Mikey856 Sony are going to have to have a very good showcase in next few weeks,it will determine whether I keep the headset or sell it on...although I think it's good I still think the tech needs another 10 years before it's mainstream
@SBan83 again they are hardly making any money on the hardware. They want to sell it and have people spending money in their ecosystem. They'll get their 30% from all the 3rd party games sales, which is the vast majority of the games.
Why put it on PC so steam can get the 30%? Makes no business sense.
Lazy devs imo
@JP80 tbh I’m thinking the exact same. How have we not had an announcement for Half Life yet. The mind boggles
Who needs it? I'll still be too busy playing GT7 anyhow 😉.
@TrickyDicky99 - I think you miss the point. If you open up the PC access then you get more sales of the hardware to people who have both a PC and PS5. Those additional sales will bring in additional software sales, both PC and PS5 games. Yes not all will be PS5, but some will.
That's a shame, considering it already has VR support on PC, I'm not sure why not support PSVR2. I can only assume it doesn't perform very well on initial testing on PS, it's not worth putting money in to try to fix that, and it would end up underperforming as a VR racing sim next to GT7 so it's just not worth the money.
@TrickyDicky99 well Sony obviously doesn't think so. Most of the narrative has been from Bloomberg, how many they wanted to sell, oh no the forecast is not good, Sony are cutting production! It's only sold 300k in a month!
The only thing we've actually heard from Sony is that they are not cutting production.
If you actually look at the numbers (if true) it's been a good launch. Highest ever for a wired VR headset, and against others it's still very good. Pico 4 47k and the Valve Index with millions of possible PC gamers 46k. The quest 2 which launched at great value and marketing is obviously out of its reach, but in the vr landscape its doing well.
The thing is, only Sony know if its hitting the sales numbers they were expecting. We have no idea how its tracking for them
It's just starting selling at retailers, so the numbers could get very interesting now(very in the UK showed they sold 150 in 48 hours, that's one retailer not known for gaming. Game are selling it with 2 games for £15 more). They hopefully have a big showcase coming up, to show what they have coming. With that and some great deals at Christmas it could be a very different story by the end of the year. If not then they can pivot. But to write it off after 3 months is just laughable.
@TrickyDicky99 I'm not defending anyone, just stating that in the VR landscape its apparently doing well. And it's way too soon to be so negative for such a niche product.
And demand what exactly? I think it's selling for a very fair price. It has some great games already and around 100 more in production/ being ported. I've been having an amazing time in the games I've played so far and it's miles better than my old pcvr.
Now if in a years time there's hardly anything in production or support from Sony then yeah, I'll moan then. But for me it's been a great launch.
@TrickyDicky99 that's poor sales according to you! How many were you expecting them to sell in the first month? And we have no numbers since then, so how sales are going after retailers starting selling we don't know.
Gt7 and resident Village are brilliant AAA experiences, and there looks to be plenty more coming, hubris, crossfire, firewall, redmatter 2, journey to foundation, project Wingman. And let's see what the showcase has to offer.
And I like how you say most people all the time, how many people did you survey?
@Serialsid i just bought mine when best buy opened up sales , im sure its going to sell some more now that you can go on other retailers to buy it. im not saying sales will be crazy , but it will help.
@TrickyDicky99 again you have no numbers since it started selling at retailers so you have no idea how its selling.
GT7 being a cross gen game stop doesn't stop it being the best driving experience on any vr platform. What gen a game is had no bearing on its quality, just look at the latest Zelda, a masterpiece by all accounts on a tablet!
The games I mentioned aren't indies. And AAA games cost anywhere between 50-100 million these days, you think they're going to do that for a vr game? It's obvious that VR is not for you and never will be.
@twitchtvpat hope you enjoy it 👍. What games are you starting with?
@TrickyDicky99 its always going to be a niche market, limited sales numbers so limited gaming budgets. Will never change, well not until the tech matures well past what we have now, so I really don't know what your expecting.
Psvr2 is getting 1st party games, quest(not ideal) and more and more pc ports that take advantage of the psvr2's extra features. Plus Sony have said they are looking to have games that cross both meduims, like res evil village does. How good they'll be who knows. But that's what we're going to get, that is modern day VR. So if your not interested in any of those then yes, I don't think vr is for you and won't be for a long time.
@Serialsid i've just been playing horizon call of the mountain so far ,pretty early on i'm pretty impressed. i think im going to try out no man's sky next. but i feel like they have something they can work with. i really want the ps5 version of re7 to get an update.
@twitchtvpat horizon is a good game, just to much climbing for me! Looks great though.
Yeah I hope re7 gets an upgrade too, but I don't think it will. Can't recommend village enough though, great experience and visuals in vr. The atmosphere is totally different to the flat version.
I've not tried no mans sky yet, heard mixed reviews.
I’m really disappointed we’re not getting F1 in VR but GT7 is still amazing. I don’t play anything else as nothing compares. Still would have been fun. I’ll keep fingers crossed for 2024.
Think there might be something in that GT7 is so good that they can’t make F1 compare favourably.
It's gone from Day1 to never for me as well! (Was really hoping they were just wqitingnon the announcement) ...New it was a sad day when EA bought codies...
It's EA, what have they done in VR, Star Wars snippets, I think Squadrons had support, Medal of Honor VR which was supposedly terrible.
Codemasters Dirt Rally VR support was impressive.
Have I played an F1 game in a while you bet I haven't I just don't see much need to for the content offered and how broken I've heard they have gotten.
With Project Cars/Dirt Rally/Dirt gone because EA cared for the licensed IPs of F1 and WRC and maybe left Grid to have a place where NFS doesn't? I swear I did read that the other IPs were dropped/cancelled right? I don't know but EA are license hungry. https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2022/11/ea-reportedly-writes-off-project-cars-dirt-franchises
EA with any console/peripheral with not a large enough userbase 'yeah we'd love to support it......' secretly we won't though. EA just doesn't care. Is a up and coming platform a risk I don't think so. One a few years in sure but you need games to have an audience not have an audience to have games like these companies seem to do. Is a VR mode that hard for existing games. I assume not at this point as devs get more suited to things. Even if we get Wii launch title levels of bad from many still sigh. When will some devs learn how good Wii titles did motion controls. Is it for VR games more a risk I'd say yes, but a simple mode or whole game experience in VR it can't be that much more effort especially for a cockpit view or chase cam view ingame (2D menus if need be) and however much graphical differences and head tracking.
@Serialsid Who says they're not making any money on the hardware? That's just your assumption. If they wanted to be making money solely off VR games then they'd have done a far better job on that front and not had such a tiny library devoid of most of the cool PSVR 1 titles. I'm not made of money and I don't see any value in buying the PSVR 2 solely for playing with PS5...but if it also supported PC VR I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I'd still be buying PSVR 2 exclusives from Sony's store but I'd also be able to use it to play the many racing games on PC which are not available to play in VR on PSVR 2.
@RonnieL But not "everyone and their dog" make OLED headsets like the PSVR 2 and I'd have loved to take my plunge into VR with this but alas, not with such a pi** poor library devoid of most of the cool PSVR 1 titles. I don't see any value in buying the PSVR 2 solely for playing with PS5...but if it also supported PC VR I'd buy it in a heartbeat, as I'd still be buying PSVR 2 exclusives from Sony's store but I'd also be able to use it to play the many racing games on PC which are not available to play in VR on PSVR 2.
@RonnieL "Tons" doesn't exactly describe PSVR 2 sales if you follow the news.
@SBan83 and you don't know if its selling at a profit either. They've spent millions on R&D, production, and parts have gone up alot in the last 2 years alone. They will be making the majority/all of their profit from their own store selling software. They want their 30% cut off pavlov, not give it to steam.
And I wouldn't call the 40-50 games in the launch line up as tiny. I'd even say it's one of the strongest of any hardware ever. For me personally gt7 and village were worth the price alone, and I've been having great fun with other titles too. I've even seen PC gamers on forums buying ps5/psvr2 just to play gt7. We have some great games coming that we already know of, and hopefully more to be revealed very soon.
Anyway I don't think Sony will ever make it PC compatible, just not in their own interests. So maybe you should just ignore psvr2.
Oh and to your other reply to @RonnieL, we don't know the sales numbers, especially since its been released to retailers. It had the best sales launch of any wired headset and very good compared to nearly every other headset apart from quest 2. And it was never going to beat that. Nobody knows if Sony are happy with the numbers or not.
