Beat-'em-ups have been on the rise in recent years, so why not keep things rolling? Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is a brand new entry in the storied series, and it's coming to PS5 and PS4 very soon.
Developed by Secret Base (Streets of Red: Devil's Dare Deluxe) and published by Modus Games, this is a retro-style side-scrolling beat-'em-up that has you pummelling goons in the streets of 199X New York. It's very much inspired by the classics, but of course, this modern iteration has one or two things to set itself apart.
The game will feature a total of 13 playable characters, so you won't just be hitting the streets with Billy and Jimmy Lee. Two others are the gun-wielding Marian and newcomer Uncle Matin, a strong character who uses a riot shield. The big USP here is the game's tag-team mechanic, allowing you to swap between fighters for some unique attacks and to build up some killer combos.
To maximise replayability, the title will also feature a "dynamic mission select function". According to the press release, the order in which you choose your missions will affect fundamental things like mission length, difficulty, and the number of enemies. The aim is that this non-linear structure will allow players to take down the four crime lords and their gangs in more ways than one.
Using special KO moves, you'll earn money and health pick-ups, and of course you can upgrade your brawlers between bouts. As you'd expect, the game will feature local co-op (with online co-op to follow in a post-launch update), so you won't be going it alone.
Releasing in the summer of this year, are you excited for Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons? Uppercut the comments section below.

I was a huge fan of Double Dragon on the NES and even bought the 4th game on PS4 when it released. Not a fan of the art style on this title, but I'm willing to give it a shot.
Yeah I'm not overly keen on the look of this! Could be fun, though!
This looks fun, and the semi-chibi design isn’t without its charms, but I think I would have preferred abs of steel Marian from River City Girls 2 rather than gun toting Marian. Slight Rolling Thunder 2 vibes from her, though, so there’s potential!
Double dragon neon was awesome. Wish they would continue in that style
Looks terrible. And I loved Double Dragon (spam the elbow haha!)
Ill be checkin this out, but i dont like how the art is a blatent Shredder's Revenge ripoff.
The artwork is hideous, it will be cool if wayforward make new double dragon using river city girls artwork and gameplay.
I hope this will be good.
I love the genre. And I thought with ultimate alliance (an isometric beat em up I will argue this) and most definitely rockstar the warriors I thought we were on the cusp of a
Genre revolution. While I love the classic side strollers, just imagine tmnt in the warriors world. That would be amazing.
I'm diehard retro gamer, as usual the art style let's it down. Much prefer last vendetta:)
Sold! I have this on the Commodore 64 in a big box in the attic. Don't fix double dragon if it's not broke this will be an ultra version thank you!
@Ashcrapper ksssh (bondage lady drops whip)
I wish these game developers would do-away with this 8-bit/16-bit design mess. I'm cool with a throwback but at least make it look better like Bloodstained. I won't be playing this.
Not liking the look of it. Could still be a fun beat em up though.
Looks pretty fun, maybe I'll wishlist it. Thanks Abobo
I'm in. Just waiting for the preorder to go back up on Amazon. Looks like Scott Pilgrim meets Double Dragon. Great to see Abobo at the end of the trailer lol, classic bad guy. We went so many years without any beat em' ups and then suddenly we were treated to the return of Streets of Rage, Shredder's Revenge and now Double Dragon! Games must be selling well!
I guess they (the developers ) saw how well received Shredder's Revenge was and thought the art style was the reason. It worked for TMNT because we use to play them that way. This could be good, so I'm not counting it out before I play it myself.
Actually, after watching the video I've warmed to it a bit. Hopefully there is a big green fella in it
Looks like 99Vidas
Had i not played 50 hours of Streets of Rage 4 i would probably be more into this. But it is hard to beat SOR4. That to me is my all time favorite beat em up. Even the Turtles game didn’t do much for me and i played it on GP and didn’t even want to buy it afterward. Would day one a Streets of Rage 5 for whatever price. This is sadly a pass for me. Hope it does well to keep the genre going tho.
It won't stop me from getting the game but... roguelite elements? Bleh...
Glad we are getting a new DD game nonetheless.
Some people also say the artstyle is reminiscent of TMNT Shreddrer's Revenge but imo its slighty less visually impressive then that game.
@get2sammyb Normally would be quite keen on a retro inspired reboot of something as classic as Double Dragon, but the visual style here rather than leaning into Streets of Rage 4 feels I dunno, more like a mobile game?🤔😕
Bit like Double Dragon 4 which instead of at least try for the 16bit arcade style original went for that God awful NES style...didn't it review up buggyon Push Square?
Never saw a PSN release down under region but might’ve been spared by sounds of it!
@wiiware that would be dope. A grittier version of RCG's artstyle would work better.
@Green-Bandit SOR4 is still the king of beatemups. Im still accidentally learning new combos on that.
@CRASH64 i agree, it’s so good and has great music and levels, overall just perfectly done in my opinion. Think it sold fairly well to so a part 5 isn’t out of the question.
